I found an Enigma quilt on the side of the freeway here in the PNW when driving to work. It's the yellow/grey standard size 30 deg. model. It had a pretty nasty tear where one of the buckles connects to the inboard cell and it seems to have lost some down there. I ordered some high quality down (not fill) from a company in Germany, re-stuffed the cell, repaired with Tenacious Tape, and now acts as an insert for my _2GOSYSTEMS Therme_ sleep system for my winter hikes into the N. Cascades where I recreate! I can go neg. temps. no problem with this combination - I know it's unconventional usage for the Enigma, but as an insert for an already great bag in extreme conditions I couldn't be happier - and it was free!!!

Thanks for the in depth review on this quilt. I read your website review and watched this video - you do a great job of reviewing gear. I ended up grabbing the custom EE 20 degree 950 down quilt in 7dx7d while they were having a 10% off sale for custom gear in November. I am looking forward to getting it. Thanks again for the review.

Thank you! I’ve been looking everywhere to see how small the 30 packs down. How is the temp. rating on the 30 degree 950 for you? I love all my EE gear but I have a 20 degree XLong/Wide Apex Enigma but I didn’t really anticipate how much room it was going to take up, it’s huge and doesn’t compress down that much. Planning to sell it and get the 30 degree 950 fill and if temps drop down too low I can layer my 50 degree Apex over it which will help with condensation too. It’ll still be about the same weight for both and take up less space than that one quilt lol

You bet! That 30 degree 950 fill compresses down pretty small. Very similar to the Zpacks 30 degree 950 fill quilt I've got. If you use a compression bag, it'll get super small. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the helpful review. Sincerely appreciate your sizing advice: Which length would you recommend if you're on the edge of EE's length sizing? For example, an EE Regular Length is supposed to fit height 5 ft 6 in. tall to 6 ft tall, and a Long is supposed to fit 6 ft - 6 ft 6 in. tall. If you are a 6 ft tall side and back sleeper, would you order a Regular or Long length? If you are a 5 ft 6 in. tall side and back sleeper, would you order a Short or Regular length? In both cases, we'll be going with width Wide. Thank you! (Asking because I've seen a 5 ft 9 in. tall user say he wouldn't want his Regular length any shorter, which may mean you should size up if you are right on the edge of the length guidance).

Hey there Leigh! Glad the review was helpful! You really can go either way, but generally, I don't think you'd hate the extra length. That extra length also allows you to stuff clothes in the bottom of the quilt to keep them warm and take up dead air in the quilt. That said I'm 5'11 and haven't had any trouble at all with the standard 6ft length model. The standard length would be the most thermally efficient for you. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

What do you think about getting a “long” for someone 5’9” rather than using a hood/beanie/hoodie?
@BackwoodsPursuit3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I've actually done that with my first Enigma. After trying it both ways I'd say I thought going the hood route was my preferred option. When you put your head under quilt, your breath can cause moisture on the inside of the quilt. Thanks for watching and let me know which route you end up going!

How do you block the eye without having something tight strapping to your eye / head?

@@BackwoodsPursuit I mean eye mast to cover the light. what do you do when is bright in the morning to block the light? with a normal mummy bag u can throw thw hood over your eyes
@BackwoodsPursuit3 жыл бұрын
Awe...gotcha. Well, I'm typically up before the sun when out hiking/hunting, so haven't had that issue. With a quilt though, you can get one of those down hoods, which could serve the same purpose in blocking the light if needed. Thanks for watching!

Do you know what Enlightened Equipment's stance is on hunting? Given the choice I'd rather buy gear from a pro-hunting company. Thanks!

That's a great question. As far as I know they are pro-hunting, but I'll have to double check to be sure. Thanks for watching!
