In this video I will be reviewing the Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20° Down Quilt. I used this quilt on my 2017 Appalachian Trail thru hike. The EE revelation is a VERY popular choice among long distance backpackers. Lets take a look at the quilt and see some of the pros and cons from my experience with the quilt on the Appalachian Trail.
A note on this quilt as of 2023. The amount of down has been increased I believe twice now in newer versions of this quilt and most if not all EE Quilts since I purchased in 2017. The quilts should match their temp rating much better but will be slightly heavier from the increase in down fill used.

As much as I love money, I would highly suggest giving yourself at least 48 hours before any purchase decision and asking yourself “Do I really need this?”. I hope more times than not, you find yourself saying “I Definitely do NOT need this”. If you find yourself still in need, shop around and find the best deal for your money.
Please note that I am not recommending any of the gear seen in any of my videos. The gear I use is what I have found works best for me at the time period I am using it. I have come to these gear choices through vast levels of trial, error, and experimenting with gear out on trail.
Gear, clothing, footwear, etc. are not one style works for all. Do as much research as you can, try out things in person if able, and make the best informed purchase decision for YOU. Do not buy gear just because it worked for, was showcased by, or recommended by someone on KZbin

Note from future Chris - Feb 2022 - Enlightened Equipment has increased the amount of down fill used within their quilts I believe twice now since this video was posted back in 2018. The increase in down fill used should mean the temp rating of the quilts should be significantly more accurate in their offerings currently than back when I purchased mine however long ago. I ended up selling this quilt at some point and messed around with a Katabatic 30 degree flex for a bit and picked up another revelation 20 long wide back in 2020 or 2021 and am still using it currently.

Quickly becoming one of my favorite content creators simply by the fact that you take the time to go back to your old videos, and make updated comments on them -- specifically on reviews. With that said, have you ever had any experience with a UGQ Bandit? Or is the EE just a super solid option? When you purchased your new EE, did you opt for the draft collars? Currently deciding on a quilt now (if you couldn't guess!). I was initially going to get an EE Revelation (Reg/Wide) and add the draft collar (going with a 30 degree quilt, most of my camping is fairly mild). HOWEVER... EE has stock options (in the color I want, size and all), but they do not have the draft collar. Ordering a custom one isn't a big deal for me, because I have the time to wait, but the issue is price. The draft collar adds $20, which isn't much. What is, though, is that I found a 10% coupon for EE, but it only applies to stock items. So, I can get a 30 degree EE with 850 fill in the regular/wide stock for just shy of $300 (that's with tax included). If I really want the draft collars, the custom option will be just over $350 after tax. So... are the draft collars worth an additional $50? I don't mind paying the additional if they are that nice, so I wanted to pick your brain because my girlfriend has had enough of my quilt spreadsheet madness! Thank you so much for your time!!

Assuming you bought the newer version with the overstuff, how accurate would you say the temp rating is now since the change in 2019 or 2020? I have one and wanting to see before taking it on a PCT thru. Also, why the switch from the katabatic back to the newer revelation? (Also considering katabatic)

Just FYI, EE upgraded their down stuff per rating by 30% since this was made, so the current temp ratings should be generous. Most women on the PCT seemed to recommend the 10° option.

The pad straps on EE quilts are the bees' knees. I switched from another well known quilt maker which I won't name, both because EE is now doing overfill standard - and I sleep cold, and the quick release pad strap system.

I just ordered the same exact quilt from EE. With their Holiday sale I got the long wide for $270. Plan on using it mainly 3 season but in colder Pennsylvania ( my home state)weather I will use a fleece liner along with it ( plus long johns and a puffy coat) if I am out at or below freezing. I am section hiking the AT with about 300 miles done , but also do a lot of hiking on PA’s Mid State Trail. This quilt should serve me well I believe. I was a little hesitant about the down as I always have used synthetic but the weight saving and packed size is to much to resist. Thanks for the great review.

I have one of these quilts. Let me say that it is the best piece of outdoor equipment I have ever had. I'm a truck driver and Nature Photographer so this thing is going to be used hard. I have slept in my truck with no heat on down to 18 degrees F . This is with just underwear on and I am toasty warm every night.

Hey, Chris. Great video! I appreciated the comment section, as well, as I got some good tips from there. I already had a 40 degree EE quilt but just picked up a nearly-new 10 degree EE quilt for an amazing price. I was curious as to whether the 10 degree quilt would be too warm for the AT, but you indicated that you may even select a 0 degree bag. I feel better about my purchase!

Think the 10 will treat you well. Since I bought this quilt EE increased their down fill twice. I believe it’s now something like 20% more down than when I bought mine. Apparently the temp ratings are more accurate now but I cannot say that’s the case having not used one of the newer quilts. Think the quilt will treat you well!

Picked up one on craigslist (20 burrow) for the girlfriend. Tried it out when we got home and I was blown away by the fabric they use on the inner. It has a noticeably different feel then the outter material. Their website shows they use Argon 67 and 90 so not sure which is which. Either way the material feels great!

just checked my invoice from them, and mine uses the 90 inside and out.i wasnt aware of the that particular fabric myself, but pretty happy i went with HG. mine is the older style with the snap footbox instead of the zipper. helps if your a sprawl sleeper. this thing goes pretty much all over the world with me for work. love it.

Nice! Ya I was looking at hers and it looks like the same fabric but it looks like the outer layer is flipped on the other side. The inner has like some raised bumps if that makes any sense. Her is also snap button closure. Looks like a solid quilt!

@crswro1690 6 жыл бұрын
just checked mine, and it seems like the bumps are from the weave crimping of the ripstop.been sleeping with this thing at home since i got it, and picked up a expander stretchy liner for it when im out and dont wanna stink up the works. Whatever this argon fabric is, its pretty comfy even when you get a little sweaty.

Great review! I was wondering about how warm the quilt actually was and you answered my question. I'm in the market for a new sleeping bag or quilt. My 35 degree rated mummy bag left me freezing at 55 degrees over the summer. I had on winter baselayers and was still cold. I'm looking for something that I can use backpacking and car camping because I can only afford to buy one bag or quilt. Side sleeping and mummy bags don't necessarily go well together. I have plenty of time to research and decide what to purchase over the winter.

it was the 10d. I switched to a katabatic flex 30 for a while and that felt much better sweat wise. Pretty much no stick. I ended up buying another EE quilt and its still the same material as back when I reviewed this previously. Can definitely get sticky in there

Dramatic reinactment. Haha! I have a 10 degree 900 fill EE Convert. Got it a few years ago during their Black Friday deal. I LOVE it. So versatile. It works great on the AT. How did you wash and dry yours? What cleaning agent? It looks brand new!
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't exactly follow EE's wash instructions. I used the NikWax Down wash (about 5oz each wash- which is also not recommended I believe). Took the quilt to a laundromat and ran in through a cycle on cold. Put it in the biggest dryer at the laundromat on low heat with 3 tennis balls. I would take it out about every 15 minutes to break up the down. When doing so I noticed a fair amount of "stank" was still kicking around. So tossed it back into the washing machine again with another 5oz of down wash and this time the warm cycle. Took out and put back into the dryer with tennis balls breaking up any clumps of down about every 15 minutes. The quilt probably took about and hour and a half to feel dried out. I brought it home and put it on a drying rack with a very high powered fan blowing out it the next 24 hours. I would periodically walk by and shake up the quilt and put it back on the rack with the fan blowing. Worked very well. No holes, or torn stitching that I have found!
@TM_FL
@TM_FL 6 жыл бұрын
ChrisGoesOutdoors That's great! I will try that when mine needs a washing. I don't have a drying rack or a high powered fan, but I do have a floor fan on a stand I can use. I will figure out something to lay it across. Thanks for the tips! Great vids, as always! Waiting for your next hike videos 😉

As always Chris I appreciate your videos so much! Do you notice a difference in summer comfort between brands? Trying to not name drop but in the market between this beauty and the “quilt that worked for you” in Colorado. I would imagine summer comfort is almost more related to the nylon fabric, thinking 7D for a summer specific quilt. Not sure if you can comment and if there is a noticeable difference between companies in that “clammy” or not so clammy feel? Many thanks 🙏🏻

For a thru-hike as I am planning to do the JMT next summer would you recommend a 10* over a 20*? Also, I am barrel-sized 250#s, was wide enough or would you go extra wide? Thanks
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I think 10 would be a good call. And I think wide will be ok for you. I am a pretty large build usually sitting around 220 and there was enough extra fabric on my sides that I did not get drafty. If I did the AT again and got an EE quilt I would probably go 0 personally.

Hello Chris, Thanks for the excellent review...You covered a lot of very important features. Very helpful. I notice that--at 6' tall--you mentioned that you are happy with the length you have (Long, 84", Wide 58")? Also, I have noticed from videos that when the foot box is cinched up, the quilt shortens by about 6". I am 6'1" (183 cm.) and am torn between the Regular (78") and Long (84") size? I am a side sleeper who likes to sleep out in cold weather with my head under the sleeping bag. I know there are down caps at Enlightened ($60) and on Amazon ($20-$25) that one can wear. Do you sleep with your head under the quilt, or sticking out? Which size might you recommend? I am thinking of buying the Long/Wide version of the "Rev-Hole-ation" (quilt/poncho). Any suggestions are most appreciated. Happy trails...Cheers!

I actually went long wide specifically so I could pull the quilt up around my head a bit. I personally would not go regular length. I noticed that you used a sleep pad that tapers at the bottom and I thought I saw you slip the pad down in the foot box which also appear to be tapered when either zipped or cinched (depending on the model one chooses). Question, if I have a BA Q-Core Deluxe (does not taper), will that quilt still work…or would I have to go with an open foot box, as pad may not be slim enough to slide down in to the foot box??? Also 😬 anyone have any idea or leads where I may go and actually touch the fabric/material used (yes, I have a lil sensory issue 🤦🏻‍♀️)?

How was the long version in your solplex? I’m wondering if it pushed up against the wall and condensation caused significant wetting out.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, at my height (6ft), and using any sort of inflatable sleeping pad in the solplex, the foot end of ANY quilt will be rubbing on the wall. I detailed how I kind of fought condensation this a little bit in my solplex video, I would place my packcover over my feet. As far as rubbing up on the side or the upper portion of the tent though not at all. In fact the edges of the quilt packed down nicely on the side of my sleeping pad and were held in place nice by the bath tub style floor. And it wasn't long enough that it was touching the top end either. Hope that makes sense!

Do you use the 20 degree during the summer or switch to a higher rated one?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I usually stick with the 20 now. I had a 40 degree EE revelation too but sold it as it was just easier to have the one. I think 20 degree is a good general purpose quilt. Especially where you can open it up to kind of breath more.

@@ChrisGoesOutdoors Thanks for the reply. I am looking to buy a quilt and was debating on a 20 or 40 degree. I live in Georgia and most of my hiking is between April and september on the AT or surrounding trails. New to backpacking so I watched your video on the 20 degree EE quilt.

Gotcha! My experience in Georgia during April was a very warm one. You maybe ok with a 40 degree one during that time frame. I really like the versatility of the 20 though. Especially in New England or the Whites where I usually hike. Temps can vary really extensively up here. Not to confuse you anymore but I would probably still pick the 20 haha

How tall are you for the long? I’m about 6ft and wonder if I should get the long. I think that puts me at the cusp
@ChrisGoesOutdoors

I’m 6ft tall and preferred the long. I had a 40 degree in regular length and it came right up to my neck. The long allows me to move about and also pull up more over my head on colder nights.

Did you use the straps much - seems like I would leave them behind...?

I brought them on trail and I think I used them twice before I shipped them home. In the solplex the long wide version quilt worked well in that the extra material on the sides of me was kind of held in place nicely by the bathtub floor of the tent so I didnt really find I needed them at all. They do their intended purpose though!

Im 6ft tall as well. I had a regular length revelation in 40 degree at one point and it went right up to my neck. I preferred the long as it allowed me to pull the quilt up over my head if for whatever reason I was super cold. I would choose wide for myself and did so for both the 20 and 40. Hope that helps!

Why with 19 colors of outer colors and 12 of inner does everyone choose blue, green and black?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
The blue/gray you see here is the color EE offers for their "off the shelf" 20 degree quilts, and green/black is the color of the 40 degree "off the shelf" quilts. These off the shelf models are available at a much faster turn around (ship within 1-2 days) than a custom ordered quilt (current wait time is about 2-4 weeks). With the off the shelf you choose temperature rating, and specific length/width combos, they are all also filled with 850FP downtek down. The "Custom" allow more customization including 950 FP down and choice of color or lighter fabrics for instance. I think those colors are the most prominent because people dont want to wait for the custom colors and they are usually what most people pick for temperature range in quilts. I personally prefer the darker colors as it helps hide dirt a little better. This thing got pretty filthy out there haha. Thanks for watching!

Late to this vid's "party". I see the wide is listed by Enlightened at 58" and yours was 52" actual. This discrepancy is due to 58" being measured prior to fill... correct? After fill... it becomes roughly 52" actual...correct?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the actual length they list is the length the fabric is cut to before being sewn together. The fill could also have something to do with the discrepancy

Thanks for the video, very useful. Perhaps you were so cold compared to the temp rating because you used a NeoAir XLite which has an R-value of only 3.2. (At least that's what you're using in the video.) Quilts in cold weather should be used with a pad with an R-value of 5 or higher, like the NeoAir XTherm which is 5.7.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Its possible but I genuinely think that the quilt is just liberally rated. There also seems to be a consensus on the internet that EE quilt temp ratings seem to be a little bit of a stretch. I've slept on sleeping pads where the R value was very low and I could feel my underside was freezing but its not the case with this quilt / sleeping pad combo. Whatever side was facing the ground felt plenty warm but other than that it was a pretty genuinely cold experience. Actually planning on picking up an Xtherm soon for winter use and possibly a different brand quilt this year. Could give the theory a test run at some point haha. Thanks for watching!
@sweepingdenver
@sweepingdenver 6 жыл бұрын
I think there is definitely some truth to your point, but I also think that there is a consistent use of under-insulated pads in quilt reviews. So I don't think it's a coincidence that this comes up a lot. Also at certain mid-level R-values I think the insulation would cause a gradual but disruptive leakage of heat over a few hours without feeling an obviously cold ground on your back. But yeah, only one way to find out -- please report back with another video if you are ever able to test the EE + Xtherm in 30 degree weather!

Very true as well. I will actually try to do a follow up at some point. Hoping to pickup an extherm in a few weeks. Will try to do a shoulder season hike when its in the 30s or so up in the Whites!

The temperature ratings on this bag is awful. Read the reviews on their on website to back up. I bought the -6c. The temp dropped to around +1c and I was bloody cold. For the money I paid and to have it imported to the UK, I am seriously pissed off. Until you’ve used it on the trail you don’t know how it will hold up, which it DID NOT, and then obviously you can not return it. All the hype around these bags - what a let down!!!

Stickyness is caused by presperation , sleeping too hot , due to going to sleep before cooldown of the day , or high blood pressure: aka hypertension , at night. Or the bag was too hot for the conditions warranted .

Sol lid comparison! have not had or should I say have not noticed any sort of down leakage from this quilt. I also have a revelation 40 and have not seen any from that either. I picked up an Aegismax Windhard recently as I liked that it doubles as both a quilt and a down poncho and actually returned it as there was an ABSURD amount of down leaking from it.
