I served Active Duty as an Army Bandsman & then in The Guard & Reserve fo 21 years while continuing my career as a Private Music Teacher and Performer . Had PX & BX benefits & now have a Retirement & Health Insurance. It's not for everyone but it worked for me .

if you love music, and get passed the audition it is a great experience. A couple things outside of this: As a bandsman you will 100% be deployed if you are active duty or reserve. Those teams typically work as base security or prison security in deployment zones. You aren't doing patrols, but are guarding local resources.

What is the career path to becoming a military musician? They used to say "Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines ..... you don't need experience, we give it ..... what a great place to start!" in television military recruiting campaigns in the early 1980's. This doesn't seem to be the case with military musical careers, however. The Army can teach a recruit how to dig a foxhole and zero a weapon but not what a major third or a time signature is. Infantry fighting is a trade but music is an art. Could a career path to becoming a military musician start with playing in a high school band? Are there any active military or military veteran musicians here? Please explain how your long journey began to this role from day one. American Army Veteran here. MOS 63B10. LWVM. Honorably discharged in 1995. In the 6th grade I wanted to take up a band musical instrument, as the saxophone, but my mother and father would not let me. They were worried about the cost of instrument rental. Musicianship was one military trade that was never an option for me in 1988, so I became a truck mechanic instead. I was always a tinkerer and I was intrigued by the Army's early 1980's ad for fixing jeeps and getting GI Bill benefits. I always thought it would be fun, glorious and proud to be a sharply-dressed soldier in an army band. The marching band is the epitome of military culture everywhere. Do army musicians ever have any field training at permanent duty stations? FTX's, ARTEPS? Camping in the woods? Bivouac? I come from a military family but have never known any military musicians personally. 42R band members must truly be the Army's Proud and Few!

I was in the Marine Field Bands for 4 years. Straight out of high school. Personally, I took lessons from as early as 7th grade and studied with a nearby professor of French horn for my last 2 years of high school. I knew people who came in with less experience, so talent can get you there. We were in peacetime. I did not deploy or do more than one field op, tbh. I knew people who had volunteered individually for deployments. Wish I'd done more, but being a bandsman was a demanding job in itself. We stretched our small numbers as far as they could reach.

ay, I'm in the same shoes, I'm serious about alto sax, but I keep getting worried about not having a degree in music performance and being on the young side e.t.c.

U have to have a degree for active duty?
@christinewebert527510 ай бұрын
No. I was active duty. I had a degree but over half my unit did not have a degree of any kind. Many of them were fresh out of high school.
