To clarify for some of the quotes in the video, the power the 8 cares about is power over themselves and freedom to do what they want, which is why they are so concerned with not being controlled by others, because it takes away one’s freedom. Pretty much what is said at 1:35. Being seen as high status or being known as successful is not power the 8 seeks, thats more social 3. Only clarifying because when power is used for the 8 the word in that context has a specific meaning for the 8 and people often mesh in status as part of the equation when it’s not.
@TypeCast Жыл бұрын
Overall I think this a good point, especially for healthier 8s. However, as the 8 devolves, they can start to want/need domineering power over others. Basically… power for power’s sake. Of course it’s still just an effort to satisfy their own internal needs, but it gets projected against out and against the world (or something like that).

I actually have to cry when someone overcomes their basic fear and sacrifices themselves for the greater good. I always have that feeling that I want to go out like this. From this latest adaptation of Little Women, I can see Jo as an 8, but from the books and previous adaptations, I think Jo is a 4. She's an artist at heart, emotional, moody, passionate, and deeply wants to be her own person. This version portrays her with more confidence, but she has a great deal of insecurity and most 4s will take initiative and go to bat for their artistic integrity.

Interesting! I’ve never read the book. There are several examples of characters throughout this video series that could probably be interpreted multiple ways depending on their different portrayals in books, films, etc. Pride and prejudice is one of my favorite, if not my all-time favorite film. I’ve purposely never read the book because I know it will be so different from the film and I don’t want to ruin it. Even though I guess the book is the gold standard for the characters!

@@TypeCast Pride and Prejudice is a great film! Actually, I think the adaptations have been very faithful and Elizabeth's character so wonderfully portrayed. If you love the movie I think you would enjoy the book. Throughout this series it’s been interesting seeing different people’s reactions to different characters. So many of them are like a Rorschach test (I’ve had people argue that Michael Scott isn’t a Two and that Hermione isn’t a One… come on people!). I’ve tried to tell people that fictional characters might embody traits of multiple Types that a real person never would. But I like that a lot… “they can’t tell us for themselves.” I’m stealing that!

The two have more in common than many realize but I agree w the video that Jo is an 8. 4’s carry a palpable sense of longing and romance (like Amy), they are aware of the worlds many injustices, but they don’t burn and rage against them like an 8 does - (like Jo and her fight against society and patriarchy) instead a 4 internalizes emotions and allows themselves to feel everything in real time. 8’s don’t dwell in their emotions so when they experience strong emotions they lash out, never in. 4’s also seek companionship and romance far more often than an 8 does because 8’s loathe the vulnerability that come with depending on anyone. 4’s are passionate romantics, (like Amy) 8’s are passionate challengers.

Sorry, but as an eight, most of these are wildly inaccurate and just make us look like a bunch of angry douchebags whose primary motivation is fear. Idk where people get the idea that our one emotion is anger.
@TypeCast2 жыл бұрын
What would say is inaccurate about them? You don't think these characters are Eights, or they're too focused on anger? Certainly some of them are overtly angry, but I don't think they're all "angry douchebags" like you've said. Some are just "standing in their power". Do you have examples in mind of other Eight characters that would be better? I'm always on the lookout for more characters for future videos. Most of the literature says that Sixes are the ones motivated primarily by Fear, while Eights are motivated primarily by Power. Although I suppose you could make a case that every Type is ultimately motivated by fear: as a One I'm afraid of not being good and perfect, a Three is afraid of not being seen as successful, etc... I'd be curious what you think about the Type Eight Subtypes video on my channel, which uses three characters from The Godfather. One thing to keep in mind is that the point of this channel is *not* to Type specific characters, but rather to use individual clips to paint an overall picture of what each Type is all about. There's instances where I've purposely used a character with the "wrong" Type, but a certain clip fits perfectly with a different Type. So it may very well be that some of the characters in this video aren't ultimately Eights (although I feel confident that most of them are), that's not really the point. I think the clips I've chosen, combined with the quotes from many different Enneagram books, paint an overall fair and accurate picture of the Eight.
@jakesanchez66212 жыл бұрын
@Type Cast I actually think a lot of your classic action heros are good representations of eights. The first one that comes to mind is (of course) Ripley from Aliens. As soon as she saw that little girl, her protective instinct kicked in despite not even knowing the kid, which i would very muxh consider a trait of an eight. She's also very much a go getter that's not afraid of getting things done even in the face of the unknown, and she does it despite being nearly paralyzed by fear, and shes even rather pragmatic about it, doing it out of instinct instead of for a reward, like fame. While not all eights are as badass as Ripley, she still very much holds values that an eight would hold dear. She also deals a lot with PTSD, a problem I feel a lot of eights have or deal with something similar (makes sense, as your enneagram type is often the result of a past traumatic event) While not a movie, I'd even consider Senua from Hellblade to be a prime example of an eight as well, for all the reasons Ripley is (doing something about the problems in her life despite being terrified, doing it out of protective instinct rather than anger) but Senua is also super harsh on herself and holds herself to nearly impossible standards, even when when she's up against something she cant hope to defeat, and she only lets her tears fall when she's alone, where no one will judge her. As an eight, I relate to her far more than any other character, especially more than that angry racist from Motherless Brooklyn or a Clint Eastwood character.
@TypeCast2 жыл бұрын
Ripely is a great character. I should also point out that some of the characters are intentionally unhealthy, i.e. Alec Baldwin in Motherless Brooklyn, Al Pacino in the first Scent of a Woman clip, etc… The point is to show a spectrum of what each Type is like. I don’t know if you’ve seen the other videos in my series but they’re all like that. I’m a One, and I used Thanos and Dolores Umbridge in my One video. They’re about as evil as it gets, but they think they’re doing good, which is an important feature about Ones to understand. Same with the rest of my videos.

The "driven by fear of being weak and dominated" sounds more like countertype 6 rather than 8. 8s are much more driven by intensity.
@TypeCast Жыл бұрын
Eights and Counterphobic Sixes can look a lot alike, although "not wanting to be weak and dominated" is about as Eight-ish as it could possibly get. Maybe you're focusing on the "driven by fear" part? All Types are "afraid" of something, it's just the Sixes are afraid of... fear (in a sense). Could be a semantics difference, but while I would certainly agree that Eights are intense, I wouldn't necessarily say that they're "driven by intensity."

What are your thoughts on Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly, Serenity) being an Eight? He seems to display a lot of an average Eight's qualities, and appears chiefly motivated by a desire to be free from being told how to live his life, and is very comfortable being in charge, be it in his small spaceship or commanding squadrons during wartime. His loyalty and capacity to inspire loyalty in others is one of his defining attributes (although I could certainly see that being a Six as well), and is quick to show anger, especially when it comes to matters of injustice. Even when he doesn't personally like a person (like we see with Simon Tam), if he sees you're capable and strong, he'll respect them and keep them around on his crew. We see hints of him being a healthier Eight in flashbacks as well, as he has a very lusty "I'm right here, come get me" attitude during combat, yet shows compassion towards his fellow soldiers who are afraid or suffering from PTSD. Love to get your perspective!

Which is a derivitive of 2 which represents connection. So it goes like connection, stability and balance. Thats what you are looking for here. 8 in the eight trigram represents balance, from where the ying and yang symbol comes from. So you should have represented the number 8 in form of balance. Captain Marvel is an awful type 8 story: she goes from being inhuman and barely feeling to... asserting even more power and control for herself, despite the fact the real lesson is to learn vulnerability and joining a greater cause (aka not being too much of a lone wolf). Her tragic arc is presented as heroic because the writers had no idea what they were doing.
@TypeCast14 күн бұрын
I have to disagree. She has to break free from the suppressive mind/power control she’d been under, the film ends with her leaving to help the refugee Skrulls find a home, and in Endgame she’s flying all over the universe helping planets that have it just as bad as Earth. I’ll admit that her re-appearance at the end of Endgame was a bit of a Deus Ex Machina, but she seems to be living a life entirely centered on greater causes, while teaming up with Avengers on certain occasions. I’m not saying it’s the greatest type eight story ever told, but I certainly wouldn’t call it tragic or awful.

I would venture as far as to say that this is a common problem for female type eights… owning their power is very often viewed negatively in a way that it wouldn’t be for men (ie a man is strong and assertive but a woman is a power-hungry bitch). Vulnerability is absolutely an area of healthy growth for eights, but I don’t think every “healthy“ depiction of an eight in media automatically has to show a bunch of scenes of them being vulnerable. But the scenes from Patton are a great demonstration of that. He kicks ass in the speech in the first clip, then cries over a wounded soldier in the second clip. Captain Marvel is also a fictional superhero with God-like powers, so I wouldn’t hold it out as the greatest real-world example as I said. It’s more about that individual scene for me.

I’ve never read the book so I can’t speak to that, but in terms of her portrayal in this particular film, I don’t get a Four vibe. Having said that, it doesn’t really matter for what I’m doing here, which is taking individual moments to demonstrate certain aspects of each Type. The “actual” Type of the characters doesn’t really matter, although I’d argue that most of them are more or less correct.
