I’ve noticed that People soooo often mistype because they aren’t honest when they take the test, or they don’t have enough self awareness to take the test with full honesty. They answer the test questions based on who they wish they were or how perceive themselves to be, which is sometimes so skewed or delusional. One person I know intimidates everyone with a strong aggressiveness and abrasive presence… but she believes she comes across as warm, gentle and kind. It’s interesting. Sometimes I think people would be better off having their closest loved one take the test for them, someone who knows them deeply enough to be able to answer the questions objectively/unbiased. ❤

The biggest difference I've noticed in the community these personality systems attract is this: People will sometimes use MBTI to excuse their flaws, thinking that because their personality is prone to x, y, or z there is nothing wrong with it, but I have not yet seen this in the enneagram community. For example, the most common MBTI excuse I've heard from my own circle of friends goes something like, "I'm an introverted thinker, so it's okay if I'm rude to people." On the other hand, Enneagram straight up tells you that any type can be unhealthy and need self-improvement, and so I see a lot less excuses being made for any type's weaknesses. Enneagram doesn't give anyone a free pass. It took me much longer to warm up to enneagram because it can be so harsh, but in the end I think I like it slightly more for that exact reason. If anyone was curious, I'm an Enneagram 4 and an MBTI style INTP/INFP (depending on the test).

MBTI is about cognitive functions, not the letters, the letters are simply a name, a symbol, an ID. I mostly just refer to it as cognitive typing instead of MBTI instead anymore, because I like Jung's original work too, which isn't MBTI, but was the most important core of it. He came up with the 8 cognitive functions, and his system only had 8 types. An ID number won't tell you who I am, but using it will definitely help you find out things about me (at least if you have the resources and are creepy enough to dig up stuff about me like that 😂).

i think enneagram is slightly more vague, considering there are only 9 types but i think the best way of going about things is combining the two (mbti and enneagram) and finding out your personality concoction yano? For example, figuring out I was an ENTP helped me a lot with my social life and just feeling better about myself in general. Finding out I was a 7w6 helped me understand why I constantly like doing things and why I hate boredom so much (however, type 7 is closely resembling extroverted intuition so honestly, the enneagram just reinforced things that mbti has already told me - that being said, people who struggle relating to mbti could be because their enneagram is one that contrasts their mbti like an ESTP 4w5 for example. Conclusion: both are great, so use them equally!

Both systems can seem shallower than another to those who haven't gone deep enough into it, both are pretty good for going into different aspects of a person at a deep level, just in different ways. I like to think that cognitive functions are core internal processes and enneagram is more like motivations and attitudes, contrary to what Abbey said, I think that in some way, it also focuses heavily on interactions and just comparisons and differences between people, MBTI isn't alone in this or even simply more focused on it. Both are good at it.

For me personally as a ESFJ 3w2, I find the enneagram a bit more confusing sometimes, but I probably just need to do more research as I am fairly new to it. I like mbti (I swear off the 16personalities test and use the functions) because it helps me understand how I interact with the world and helps me understand how others interact with the world. The mbti community can a be a bit toxic, but if you stay on the right side (aka the side without the unhealthy bias towards intuitives and thinkers) it’s a really cool system that can be used for self growth, introduction to different psychology theories, and just understanding others a lot better. I’m still fully educating myself on the enneagram, but to me it seems more of a personal system, because you have to go into deep self reflection, and while that’s helpful for self growth, it’s hard to use it to connect with others and understand them better unless they’ve done the research too and know their type. I don’t know if that’s all coherent, but my preferences kinda are based on how useful each system is to me and how.

I used to love MBTI when I discovered it but now I find enneagram somewhat more useful, and I like that the types have more layers (instinctual subtypes, wings, tritype) Also, I feel like a lot of people in the MBTI community don't really care about self-improvement and only like MBTI because it makes them feel superior due to being intuitives or thinkers. This is not necessarily the fault of the system though. Anyway, they are both great if we use them right. PS: Thank you for the video, A 5w4 from Hungary 🙂

I'm still reading and learning about both of the personality typing systems, but from what I can gather, the central thing that the Mbti is getting at is how you deal with information and decision-making, whereas the Enneagram is getting at what are your basic motivations and fears. I think both of these things are equally important to know. both systems are actually pretty complex if you start reading about them (Mbti with the cognitive functions, loops, grips, etc and Enneagram with the wings, integration and disintegration, stances, etc) and both communities are sadly riddled with stereotypes and misinformation and people who just won't bother to learn more than surface level information about them. - someone who doesn't know either of their types yet

As an ISFJ 9w1, I think both systems are great at understanding yourself and one is not better than the other. However, what I don't like about the mbti is the stereotypes and how many people are drifting away from using it as a self-improvement tool, to instead using their type as an excuse for their weaknesses without actually acting to improve on them. Also, many use it to prove to themselves that they are better than others just basing on their and others' types and how their type is better than others. Most of these biased judgments are actually mostly based on the huge amount of stereotypes, and some types have better stereotypes than others. This leads to many not accepting their own type (which is also understandable) and, consciously or unconsciously, trying to behave like another more admired type (see the many mistyped INFJs), creating a false persona which is opposite of what mbti should be, as it is also a way to connect to your true self. Mistypes then hinder your development as you are not working on your actual weaknesses, completely losing the actual purpose of the mbti. I don't see this in the enneagram, so I believe that here it is much easier to accept who you are and work on your weakneasses, as the negative influences that are present in the mbti aren't in the ennagram

I've been using these personality metrics for self discovery and growth, and I have to say that the ennegream is by far my favourite for this purpose. Another commenter mentioned that the MBTI community will often use their type to excuse bad behaviours, but I've also found that they'll judge people and dismiss them quickly based on their type, which may or may not even be accurate. To me, the MBTI has so far felt like a box people try to fit others into as a shortcut instead of really trying to get to know them. I've only started diving into the enneagram a month ago. All the tests I took scored me as a type 5, but once I started reading into it I realized I was actually a 9w1. So far, it's been so helpful and eye-opening! I'm really glad I took the time to dive deeper, and I'm so excited to learn more about it. On the other hand, after two years of reading about cognitive functions, I still don't know what my type is! 😫 I've gotten 10/16 types when doing tests, and people have such different interpretations of Jung's work that reading about it hasn't helped much either. I suspect my type is one that's unusual for a type 9, and so most descriptions don't really fit... Anyway, it's a work in progress 😅 tldr: I like enneagram better for self-growth, MBTI is giving me an existential crisis, but at least the memes are funny

I was typed as Infp, later with cloverleaf as Infj , so I am not ready yet but I' ll be definitely checking on that... I like eneagram as I need to know why, about my motivation. I am 9/8 and there is a lot of truth in it. As I need help to withstand all this life around me, and actually see who I am, based on the studies, nowdays I list through many KZbin channels. I like yours, wish you a wonderful day ☺️🍀

Infp type 9 here. I really like them both and I like seeing or guessing who has which mbti and which enneagram together. Like a INFP type 9, 5 or 4 is like really different personalities and yet it’s super interesting how they are still infp et how their cognitive function works in light of the enneagram
@elisa46202 жыл бұрын
Hello fellow INFJ I find both systems very interesting for understanding myself and other people. Like many in this comment section, and you, I think it is best to use both as they take different but complementary approaches. It's like MBTI explains HOW (cognitive functions) and Enneagram WHY (core motives, desires and fears) you do and think what you do. They are also nice to help create complex, relatable, and somewhat realistic characters for storytellers ;)

With all due respect in MBTI there are subtypes and function loops, including the Jungian way to map out your shadow, ego, subconscious and superego types to your personality... which is delving more into Jungian personality and socionics as well tbh

I’m intj-a (5w4) and started off with mbti, quickly becoming pantomime villain intj before realising I was actually regressing as a person. “I can be blunt, rude, reclusive and spend my working day procrastinating lost in though because intj” A psychologist I work alongside advised me to look at enneagram which he felt was more useful/insightful and I initially didn’t like it as it didn’t seem to fit as well as mbti had. Over time I found enneagram useful as a tool for growth but I’ve never had that eureka moment like I did with mbti. The first time I read about INTJ after doing my first three tests (didn’t trust the first two just in case!) I felt like my birth mother had claimed me at the orphanage 😂

This is a fun comparison! I’m a 9w1 but can’t for the life of me figure out what MBTI type. Every time I take the assessment I have gotten a different type and when reading the descriptions I don’t seem to resonate with any of them. The more I learn about my enneagram number the more I find it uncanny that a typing system knows so much about me, but I haven’t had that experience with the MBTI system. I wonder if getting typed by a professional would help?

Traditional MBTI kinda sucks and don't get me started on 16p which tries to do both mbti and big 5 and fails at both. I'm a firm believer in the objective personality system because it allows for the nuances like the wings and subtypes so in the enneagram. -INFP CS-B(P) MF, 5w4 so(sp)

(I'm so sorry to be that person but I couldn't leave it) Mbti does have extra elements, but not everyone knows about them since so many people only learn about mbti through the 16 personalities website (which isn't straight up mbti but not going there). There is mbti function theory, different subtype theories, shadows, and the new work being done on objective typing by the group Objective Personality.

With MBTI and add-ons, the letters are nothing more than a symbol, or a way to identify each type, which is actually made up of a set of four different cognitive functions (there are eight altogether btw). One extension to MBTI is the concept of shadow functions, which is the person's combination of the other four functions. However, to the knowledge I can remember, that's about the only add on. What you said about MBTI is mostly about comparing different types is actually only a surface level to MBTI, especially when focusing on only letters and profiles. What you also said about enneagram going to a deeper level than MBTI isn't true. They are both very capable of going into deeper levels of a person, but accomplish this is in different ways. Again, as you said, MBTI is more about internal cognitive processes, whereas enneagram in some way is more about internal motivations. I believe that though add-ons can be helpful, they aren't necessarily always a benefit. I don't think MBTI really needs add-ons, because the collection and intertwining relationships between cognitive functions are an alternative. I'm really just trying to say that to understand MBTI, you must understand cognitive functions, which is actually what makes up the system, it was actually the very thing Jung created. The letters are only the surface. What's beneath is way more interesting.

I had the same problem. I turned out to be Type 3 (over achiever and performer). Then I went for MBTI couching, we looked at all my cognitive functions and after an interview I was typed as ENFP (tests often were giving results as ESFP, ENTP, ENFJ, ENFP). I think for Type 3 and 9 it can be hard to type themselves, because it’s hard to understand who we really are or who we want or others want us to be. 😔
