"Days of Heaven" is one of the most beautiful films ever made. It is Terrence Malick's second major film and an example of what can be achieved by surrounding a genius (Malick) with careful planning, financial courage, technical excellence and inspired post -production work. Malick (who had already overwhelmed the film industry with his extraordinary mainstream debut "Badlands") wrote and directed the film. The film was meticulously planned and the financial executives who financed it, trusted Malick and gave him the money needed to create its elegiac atmosphere. The cinematography (by Nestor Almendros) is heartbreakingly beautiful, and the film was then in post production supported by music that completed this work of art; the film's title piece here is by Ennio Morricone.

„Careful planning“? This film was shot without a script, half of the crew was abandoning the shoot, so was the director of photography Nestor Almendros, it was way over budget and was basically created in postproduction over a period of 2 years. But yes, you‘re right, it‘s absolutely beautiful!

The most visceral, sublime movie ever made with the most beautiful score I have ever heard by Morricone, and stunning cinematography by Nestor Almendros. I have lost count of how many times I have watched this perfect marriage of sound and visuals. Morricone not winning Best Score is a travesty at the very least. I wish I had a fraction of his compositional genius.

Superman and Days of Heaven were far more deserving of the Oscar for the best score of 1978 than the winner, Midnight Express.

I was 20 when this film came out--and I was overwhelmed by it! I went to see it over and over again, bought the soundtrack (vinyl of course) and wore it out as well. The most emotional cinematic experience of my life and I'm sure I'm not alone in this view.
@fabiengerard81423 жыл бұрын
TheCatgirl6 ... YOU ARE NOT. I saw it in 1978 too (after having already been totally mesmerized by ‘Badlands’ a couple of years before, and seen it several times on the old large screen). The instant I heard this morning about Linda Manz’s passing (Paris time), her magical and haunting presence, including that unique voice of hers, and the Morricone music, and every single shot of that true masterpiece started to rise again, altogether, to the surface of my memory - plus the sadness of the whole thing. But also the consolation that the film itself is still there, and it will be for ever, as well as everything and everyone being part of it.

one of the most beautiful pictures ever made, and the music stirred me from the start then kept me in my seat to the last shot. Watched it at the old Circle cinema in Washington DC, no one left but sat stunned. Every frame was a picture, and Mallick's direction was never better. Terrance doesn't make motion pictures for popcorn lovers, but moments of life lifted from ordinary people in the depths of living. I've purchased the 8 track, cassette and LP of this fine soundtrack. I will keep contributing to his artistry because he makes me watch , think and feel. I also happen to live in his home town of Bartlesville, OK.

I watched this beautiful film on Channel 4 on Friday 4th August 1989, the day that my grandmother, dying of breast cancer, was admitted to hospital. She passed away three weeks later. This piece of music always indelibly reminds me of her and although I love it, every listen never fails to reduce me to tears.

As for Signor Morricone's work on this film - nonpareil; this lyrical, aching and yet elusive end theme is among the best...a simple composition, but capturing all the unresolved emotions of both the characters and the audience. 'Badlands' is often listed as one of the key, great American films of the 70s - maybe so, but 'Days if Heaven' which appears on that list less frequently, is something of an entirely different order, and a prologue and godmother to almost everything Malick has made since (esp. 'The Thin Red Line', 'The New World', and 'To the Wonder'.

Terrence Malik is a brilliant director. Whatever is in that's guy's head, I wish I had 1% of it. Days of Heaven represents the true essence of what great filmmaking is all about. Gone With The Wind in 90 minutes, that's what you get with this with this balls out masterpiece. Pure, whimsical, epic, and melodic, Days of Heaven belongs in a time capsule, no joke.

It is said Morricone music turns bad films into good films, good films into great films, and great films into masterpieces. This film would still be a great film no matter what, but give some credit to Morricone's music blending perfectly with Malik's brilliant vision. I have a feeling if someone like Hans Zimmer would have scored Days of Heaven instead of Morricone, the visuals along with the entire film wouldn't have been as impactful as they were.
@marcusnorgren19587 жыл бұрын
Ernest Goes to Madeas Excuse me sir, talking about Zimmer, have you not seen The Thin Red Line!? Gladiator? Interstellar? Lion King? The Last Samurai? All examples of films scored by Zimmer who are all beautiful for one major reason, Zimmer's music! Come on, Terrence Malick even directed The Thin Red Line, and that film is a masterpiece.

Ok film nerds, here's a fun game. At the end of this message is a link to the title sequence of DoH. I believe Ennio Morricone wrote the music above for this opening sequence, but Terrence Malick ultimately rejected it in favour of the Saint-Sans piece that appears in the final cut. Terrance relegated Morricone's piece to the end credits, where it lives to this day. So, follow the link in a new tab, mute the audio there, and start it playing simultaneously with the Morricone tune here. (Err on the side of starting the music first). I promise you'll be shocked at how much better the Morricone sequence is. It's stunning. Malick wouldn't even have had to edit the pace of the opening images to make it work - it scans perfectly! And it being an original piece just elevates the artistry of both men. It was a terrible mistake by Malick not to go with Morricone's theme. Morricone's music reflects the faces of the people we see in the images; Saint-Sans' does not. One is folk music, the other is court music. It's obvious which one suits the images better. And yet, alas, Malik went with the dreamy, fancy-pants one, not the peasant's one. A huge, huge mistake. The man is a total genius, but ho boy, he had a nightmare on this call. Here's the DoH title sequence: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5TGYnp5mcqXaLM

The directors that never won an Oscar - Welles, Kubrick, Lang, Hawkes, Hitchcock, Renoir. Those that did - Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Norman Taurog.. Perhaps Terry Malick would rather keep in the company of the former rather than the latter list of directors. I know I would.

Thanks for the reference to Sarah and Abraham -- I'll think about it! The movie is definitely rooted in Genesis. When I first saw it, I took it as a version of the Lillith legend -- only gender-reversed: Abby = Adam and Bill = Lillith. But it's not an allegory. It has its own symbolic power, which draws deeply on the Western tradition. Thank you Terrence!

About that 'additional photography by...' credit. I have no wish to take away from Almendros' extraordinary work (which can also be seen in 'Sophie's choice', 'Places in the Heart', 'Kramer vs. Kramer' and 'The Last Metro' among others), but the story goes - at least that told by Haskell Wexler - was that he, Wexler, sat through a screening of 'Days of Heaven' with a stopwatch and calculated that 50% of the footage in the final cut was his. This is not so much a comment on the work of either photographer as much on the fabled (notorious?) editing habits of our man Terrence, and perhaps, the vicissitudes of film politics. If Wexler's account is true, both men should be equally honoured. For more of Wexler;s work check out 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', 'In the Heat of the Night', 'Medium Cool', 'Matewan' and the now legendary (first use of Steadicam in a feature film) 'Bound for Glory.'

The key word their is that they are fitting songs because they fit the time period in which the movies take place I have no problem with that. Quentin Tarantino never uses a original score either but he is a master in picking songs that fit his movies because he has a wast knowledge of all forms of cinema and know what fits. Also their are lot of people that hate 2001 I'm sure it has a silent majority of people that actually hate it.

In a way, yes. Most people have no idea how shallow the process is on how a film wins a Academy award sometimes. Shakespeare In Love won best picture simply on the basis the studio threw the best parties and schmoozed the most academy award voters. The film could have been a guy taking a shit on screen for 90 minutes, and it still would have won best picture that year. Studios do everything short of paying off voters to get their films to win, reagardless if the film even merits a nomination.

@MonoAzul It would have been nice. I would have loved it, too, if Morricone had worked on Tree of Life. However, I think the reason was, Malick didn't need any extra music, as he used mainly great classical music of the 19th century as that fit in with the storyline of the father being a classical music aspirant and afficiando.
