Bugles are calling from prairie to shore, Sign up and fall in and march off to war; Drums beating loudly, Hearts beating proudly March blue and gray and smile as you go. Smoke hides the valleys and fire paints the plains, Loud roar the cannons till ruin remains; Blue grass and cotton burnt and forgotten All hope seems gone so, soldier, march on to die. Count all the crosses and count all the tears, These are the losses and sad souvenirs; This devastation once was a nation So fall the dice, how high is the price. There in the distance a flag I can see, Scorched and in ribbons but whose can it be; How ends the story, whose is the glory, Ask if we dare our comrades out there who sleep. Count all the crosses and count all the tears, These are the losses and sad souvenirs; This devastation once was a nation So fall the dice, how high is the price we pay.

Such wistful and haunting lyrics. A true thing of beauty. And I love how the film never seems to take sides in this conflict - it recognises the waste of life on both sides.
@JohnGLewis1964
@JohnGLewis1964 8 жыл бұрын
+jonnies Nope... Director Leone did not take sides here. In Mexico he sided, in a manner of speaking, with the Rebs. He was sympathetic to them. (A Fistful of Dynamite.)

Richard Meyer His first three Italian Westerns, with Eastwood, were shot in Spain, as far as I know. {"Fistful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"}. His fourth Western, which I do not count as an "Italian" (or 'Spaghetti'} Western was "Once Upon a Time in the West", and was shot in the United States. ... For Leone's fifth and final Western, and his fourth Italian Western, ".*A Fistful of Dynamite.*", aka "Duck You Sucker" ... I believe -- but am not sure -- that he returned to Spain to shoot. However, it may indeed have been the case he shot on location in Mexico itself. And.... _the topic was Mexico_, and the revolutions they would occasionally have there. In this film, he sympathized with, rather than strictly sided, with the rebellion. It starred James Coburn, Rod Steiger, and Romolo Valli. Coburn was superb and delightful in an Italian Western, as Mr. Coburn loved to star in serio-comic films. "Fistful of Dynamite" was another very interesting success for Leone, artistically, but was again slightly hampered by scrip length, as it was to a degree plot heavy. (As was "For a Few Dollars More".) Nonetheless, I would say a very interesting film, and his second best Western, after "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". I am not so much a fan of "Once Upon a Time in the West" as I believe it is a bit pretentious... It was as if Leone was attempting to make the finest Western of all time (an epic Western). He came close to success, here, but should have stuck to his "Italian" formula (or style), imo, and which he was very good at. Chas. Bronson was also an incorrect fit for a complex lead character. This film attempted more, but then must be judged by those (higher) standards. I would say it was his third finest Western.
@JohnGLewis1964

Marc Bogart I have of course heard of that movie ... but never seen it. Perhaps I'll catch it one day.... But if it is a farce of an Italian Western, I might not be very interested. ------------------------------------------------------------------ One excellent IW, and which can stand with Leone's, is "Grand Duel" with Lee Van Cleef. Another .... "Death Rides a Horse" .... I have a several others yet I still want to see.... -- J. Lewis

Most of the actors only spoke Italian, being that it's an Italian film. That's why hardly any of the actor's mouths sync up with what they're saying. The entire film was originally Italian, but dubbed in English for North America. Also, because the three main actors spoke English, their dialogue was overdubbed in Italian, and none of what they said on film was ever recorded, because the intention was to dub it later in Italian. So they had to redub the English words of their characters for the entire film, which is also why there are sync issues with what they say.
