Enoch Burke: 'I don't believe I should be fined for my religious beliefs'

Schoolteacher Enoch Burke has given no indication he will purge his contempt despite the prospect of a daily fine of €700.
The fine kicked in from 2pm today under a deadline set by Mr Justice Brian O’Moore.
Mr Burke again turned up at Wilson’s Hospital School near Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, this morning in defiance of a court order and the financial threat now hanging over him.

He had full say as to whether or not he supervises any class not his own. This could have been avoided until, perhaps it couldn't, and then he could have sincerely launched appeals up the proscribed avenue, parents, smt, Bord of management, school operators, department, courts, supreme court. Its a shame for him that he couldn't act composed. I hear he was a competent teacher. I'm one myself and they can be lacking. I've reported a fair few in my day for not knowing their subjects, for covering teacher-student relationships up, for mistreating legal documents and for losing track of kids welfare but I've never seen a thing done. Enoch Burke is not being fined for his religious beliefs. He was not dismissed for his religious beliefs, nor were his beliefs the reason he ended up in prison. These things were the result of his own behaviour in his dealings with the school authorities which were totally unprofessional and breached codes of practice expected from any employee. He is deliberately abusing this situation to garner support from anti-trans people. For someone who has such ‘purported’ ethical standards, he seems fine with this ‘reprehensible’ gaslighting.

This is not about religous beliefs. He signed a contract with the school to work under it's ethos. So if that goes against his religious beliefs then in signing that contract he subverted his own religous beliefs...not the court and not the school or the state. He didn't even get suspended for not wanting to use the new name, he got suspended because he was following the principal around after a meal and wouldn't stop nagging her about the topic, when he was told they could talk about it when they were back in work. Other staff at the meal had to physically stop him following the principal around. Was he following her around to talk about his beliefs... Yes. Did she want to talk about them, no. Was he suspended for those beliefs? Or was it because he was actively harassing co-workers? When he was in the joy, the other prisoners complained about his behaviours. It's not his beliefs that are getting him in legal trouble, but his choice of actions. There are plenty of places he could protest... A school full of children is not one of them.

The Tavistock Clinic which was closed recently have at least 1,000 cases being brought against them. If you're going to teach this stuff to children you need to also show them the dark side. You reap what you sow. He was not fired or fined for his religious beliefs. He was fired because he behaved in an appalling manner towards the former Principal of the school. He verbally attacked her in public when he could just as easily have brought his concerns to her in a private setting. This action was abusive in the extreme. He was fined because he is in breach of a Court Order. Again, his religious beliefs are not covered within this order. One thing that baffles me is why he has seen fit to openly and brazenly object to the decision of one of the pupils within the school to transgender. This does not impact on Enoch's life. He doesn't even teach this student so therefore would have no need to engage with them, The parents of this person expressed their desired treatment of their child and Enoch refuses to respect that. Well, as a teacher he is in 'loco parentis' and it is his job to ensure this person is treated as their parent would want. Enoch is not God, nor is he judge and jury. Transgenderism may not be for him but he does not have a right to dictate what is right or wrong for another.

I don't think though that this particular teacher has made the news in a positive way. There is a very definite air of bullying and intimidation in his actions. Say I start to take the evangelical side of Catholicism really serious. Say I start trying to convert people at work? Say I'm a Muslim. hes in this situation cause he ignored school policy after he got suspended (with full pay) after humiliating a kid in PUBLIC. he's not in court cause of the kid nor his 'religion'. he's trying to appear as a victim. all he had to do was be a professional adult when working, no-one said he had to like the kid or change his religious belief.

this fine is because he continued to go to school even after suspension, regardless of the kids problem, he broke school policy. he was still being given full pay too. he didn't have to like the child just being appropriate in class is all he had to do . besides he only got suspended when he publicly humiliated the kid in a church sermon in front of EVERYBODY and then went on to targeting the principle for allowing the student to express themselves. he only got brought to court after trying to enter the school and teach class MULTIPLE times during this suspension, not because of his attitude towards the kid but because he violated school policy.

What's sad is how Ireland has, for many decades, been a country with many suffering lives of quiet desperation. No longer. While I respect people's right to express themselves religiously, he's also a teacher at a school where an older child is trying to discover their gender. He picked the wrong profession in the wrong country if he's not willing to be a little secular and leave some of his views at the door. When I go to work, whatever my beliefs, I have to leave some things at the door otherwise I justifiably get in trouble with HR. That's how life works. If he doesn't like that he can go find a school that shares his values and teach there.

It’s called indoctrination, her children don't even know that they have been severally damaged and abused - having to listen to that aggression morning, noon and night for years for their entire lives - it is wounding 0 would be to any persons psyche, thoroughly damaging to their entire person as seen by the domino affect, the sister, the son, the mother, the other son etc. Now seeing the results of her outbursts and tirades, her diatribes, the onslaught of the mother juggernaughting/bulldozing over anyone/even her own children , to get her say, to have her way - now reaping what was she has sown. Terribly sad, that they (her children, now adults) have been over run, run over with abuse and missives from their own mother, being hurled about - (on every topic, no doubt. )

Yeah, but "feelings" have no place in law, Happy Channel, because they're not facts. His religious beliefs have not been impinged - rather, the opposite - his doctrinal zeal is promoting a dictate on the very beliefs Burke holds; he's being punished for his behaviour in relation to the law, which, if you consider the edicts of religion, preach tolerance, respect & humility to alternate perspectives; it is not for the school to lay down any other regulatory mandate, other than to educate & maintain a level of discipline & behaviour that is concommitant with every individual student's wishes, including the demeanour of the teaching staff; hell, he wasn't even teaching that particular child...& if you look to the recent history of the school, there was another child a few years previously who was also transitional - Burke never made remonstration in that case; it begs the question as to why he did not....so before you start eliciting judgement upon this educational establishment, I might suggest you look more closely at the Burke family ideology & the countless confrontations they've implemented upon the local community they reside within....
