@TeddyMonka I'm sure your question was purely rhetorical, but in case anybody else reads this thread: Firstly, VPs do not have any influence on or input to policy. Secondly, tariffs *can* be effective under particular strategic circumstances. If a foreign nation is dumping product into your market at below the cost of production (effectively a cross-subsidy by their goverment) then your govt can clip the ticket for those particular products from that nation at the border, to bring those prices up to where they should be, without ill effects domestically. Tariffs cannot remain effective when their primary aim is raising revenue (although in special cases, like a nation which has not yet established much bilateral trade, and during the phase of needing to incubate domestic production, they can be effective while raising revenue for a finite period) and are particularly pernicious and self-defeating when used for retribution or spite. Part of the problem with tariffs is that they not only increase prices for domestic buyers, but they also increase administrative costs (compliance, such as record keeping, notifying, calculating, collecting and redirecting the tariff).

Trump would fix childcare by raising "Trillions" of dollars from tariffs. Economic advisers (from all sides) protest that tariffs are inevitably paid for by US consumers, but tumbleweed is what Trump has for neurons. Here's the thing: each trillion dollars raised by import duties or a sales tax (aka sweeping tariffs) would cost every man, woman and child in the United States $3000. If he raises multiple trillions every year (presumably, to provide further tax breaks for the 1%) people won't *need* childcare, because they'll be living in a trailer park and won't be able to afford to school (or shoe) their kids.

The inflation was actually caused by Trump’s tariffs and his 2017 Tax Cuts. The tariffs are like an additional sales tax and the tax cuts added more than $7T to the national debt, which flooded the market with new money. And before you start accusing me of bias, remember the 2008 banking crisis? Everyone blamed Bush (R), but it was actually caused by the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act by Clinton (D). This allowed commercial and investment banks to merge, thus allowing for more risk-taking.
