Amen to that. While I do not agree with some things of Catholicism, I really appreciate some of their philosophers and theologians. I’m Protestant but spent years at a Catholic Church. Now I’m at an Episcopalian church (given my history, fitting, right? Lol!) in whose community and fellowship I love better than the one I was at previous. But that’s me. Overall, thank God we all have one High Priest in Heaven, Christ Jesus! ✝️ 🙏

Davíd Melkonian It was dry (at my particular church). It’s a nice church, but the congregation doesn’t seem too involved and there aren’t many things like Bible studies or group discussions or too many chances for fellowship. Going to church felt like more of a chore I’d do once a week rather than a time to worship and get closer to God. So I prayed to God if I should stay or find another Church (there are many in my area) and I was led to an Episcopal Church by my house after my mother suggested it. I’ve been loving it and did more there than 7 years at my previous church, and it’s fellowship is better. I also love it because the service is very similar to that of the Roman Catholic mass, except not Roman Catholic. I personally love that kind of worship more than the light-show, band playing, contemporary churches I went to as a kid (except perhaps my very first church). To people who like those kinds of churches, hey, no problem so long as they’re biblical and God-fearing. Me personally, nah. Edit: Know any good history books for understanding the Bible better? I’m a huge book nerd 🤓

Ian Drennan Interesting. I guess it depends upon where you live and the communities around you. For me, I switched for many of the same reasons but I went the opposite way lol. I’m still new and had limited exposure to the Orthodox Armenian Apostolic ways, and I (very much appreciate their history) and my Catholic high school teaching. I do still identify as Armenian-Apostolic ‘culturally’ because that’s my history and I’m proud of it! Armenian history extremely rich and Christianity is a glue which holds them together. I‘m lumping Armenian Apostolic and Roman Catholic together for the purpose of this conversation even though they’re not identical. In the creed said in every Catholic mass, “...one Catholic and Apostolic Church”. My Protestant-evangelical girlfriend introduced me to a small non-denominational Church and its community that’s very supportive of each other. It felt exactly like the Church I had learned about in my years of studying theology in Catholic school. I’m also not a fan of the rock band lights and whatnot, and I find many of the songs corny but this Church was the first real step toward knowing Christ. She however has been raised charismatic and I’m trying to ensure she’s aware there’s a difference between the real gospel and prosperity gospel... Catholicism unfortunately turned me away from Christ from all the extra “ man” stuff they added. The feeling of disconnect because you need a man to get closer to God (I.e. Priest and Confession). The Catholic services I’ve experienced felt like we were going through the motions and it wasn’t a real community. The priest was just a guy you pay to say a relatives name for a funeral, wedding, baptism, etc. You also only saw a majority of the people on the big days like Easter and Christmas. I also don’t believe a hierarchy belongs in any religion, especially in Christianity. All that said. it’s great you’ve found a community and way to get closer to God, and I’ll praise God for that!

I was once assisting a new nurse to admit a patient. She said that the patient was Lutheran, but there was no check box for Lutheran. I told her to click the "Protestant" box. The charge nurse interrupted to insist that Lutherans were not protestants, and she was a Lutheran so she should know. I had to give her a crash course in Reformation history.

I like this channel more and more- I learned a lot about the protestant side of the Reformation that I did not know as a Catholic. I really appreciated the fairness with which you represented both sides; you accurately represented the ills of the Catholic Church during that time, and did justice to those atroctity of those abuses. There is just one thing that I found troubling with how you represented Catholic theology. I think you are under a couple false impression that Catholics believe that we need to earn our way into Heaven, that we are saved by any righteousness of our own. It may be true that Catholic theology was represented this way during the Reformation; if so, this was an abuse and a misrepresentation. It has always been the official teaching of the Catholic Church that we are saved by our cooperation with God's grace. As it says in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "We can have merit in God's sight only because of God's free plan to associate man with the work of his grace. Merit is to be ascribed in the first place to the grace of God, and secondly to man's collaboration. Man's merit is due to God (CCC 2025)."

Gabriel Allis you’re absolutely right. The PEOPLE of the church have always been in a constant struggle to live the true teachings of Christ and following the magisterium. Its not official, but at the time of the Reformation specifically in Germany, that kind of Works-Based Soteriology was the convention among low level clergymen. There was also disgustingly corrupt priests like John Tetzel, "As soon as a coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs." (I know some historians doubt whether he really said that, but for Protestants, that's how we remember him for now).

As an atheist I find the way you discuss religion to be incredibly interesting. You lay your points out without demeaning anyone who disagrees and while I will probably never believe in a higher power myself, I find the Solus about going to heaven being by the grace of god to make much more sense than anything else. Religion has always been fascinating to me, not so much the spectacle or the rituals, but faith itself, the strength to believe in something without proof in the day and age where most people demand proof for even the smallest things, takes serious personal strength that I think is often overlooked.

Unfortunately I don't think Matt is someone who has "the strength to believe in something without proof" (or rather, evidence, and neither am I for that matter), so you might have to look somewhere else for that. If you want a recent example of something Matt talking about sees as evidence for it, check out the end of his "To the Ends of the Earth" video. In this, he suggests that the survival of the church through its early persecution stage was either by supernatural help; or it is "the weirdest flukiest social phenomenon in the history of mankind"

I am not a man of that personal strength. I was born into I Christian household but did not carry a legitimate faith until I had found information I considered sufficient answers to my doubts. If you are intrested in the faith, or least want to understand why some of us believe, I suggest looking into apologetics (aka reasons for and defense of Christianity). I personally like apologist William Craig's ideas. His website is www.reasonablefaith.org/ and he has excellent and relatively short book named "On Guard." TBH I'm new to this youtube channel but I sure he has similar content as well.

And the one verse that really helps me out is this: Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is Confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what WE DO NOT see. He's made himself known not only though scripture but through nature. We know there's a creator and i agree the whole rituals and "Works" based religion is too much. The good thing is that scripture teaches different. To put your faith in Christ and that he died for all. The atonement for sin has been made. Hope this helps...

I am also a Protestant. More specifically, a Lutheran. Our church rarely talks about Martin Luther. On the 500th anniversary October 31, the reformation was not even mentioned. It was a few years ago that I looked up Martin Luther and learned so much in this short period of time compared to 50 years of going to church and learn and worship God.

I grew up LCMS Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. We were tought about Luther in confirmation class and used the Small Catechism to explain doctrine. Our pastors study more of Luther's books. Reformation Day is observed every year. (How I ended up attending a small " iglesia Christiano" in Mexico is a long story).

@@Cropmy5 As a Lutheran, LCMS, I was tought that Mary was the mother of Jesus. Jesus is God who fully took on humanity. Mary was simply the best available woman to use for God's purpose. She was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus and had other children with her husband Joseph after that. One of Jesus's brothers, James was actually the head of the early church as shown in Acts. Mary did sin like every other person, except Jesus, and she died normally in her due time. I was tought from the doctrines of Luther and that is what I was tought. Luther was the first to successfully point out the giant flaws in the Roman Catholic Church. Others had said that when the Pope disagreed with the Bible, God was right and the Pope was wrong but they got burned at the stake.

The RCC to this day has a lot of issues but I think its one great strength has been that as a unified body it remembers where it once was. It may not always be correct about its past, in many ways I think they're incorrect, but it at least has one. Unfortunately the very nature of the Protestant Reformation itself has created the sort of fractured mess even each sect finds itself. In some ways I think that it does reflect the state of early Christianity before it became organized under Roman auspices but I'm not sure it works anymore.

As an Orthodox Christian, I'm very thankful we're far enough east that none of this affected us. The Catholic church started off apostolic, like the Orthodox churches, but their ideas that everything the Pope of Rome says is divinely-inspired caused them to come up with a lot of wacky ideas (purgatory, indulgences, etc) and I really respect the protestant reformation and believe it was probably the best thing to happen to western Christianity at that time. That said, I am sad that the protestant church lost a lot of the treasures passed down by apostolic tradition by rejecting everything Catholic. For example, the clerical church orders do not have to be autocratic like they became in Europe during the middle ages, the first bishops were Christ's apostles and they passed it down through generations. They were always intended to be shepherds of the people rather than mediators between them and God. The deuterocanonical books (which protestants refer to as apocrypha) were a part of the septuagint, which is the first collective old testament book used by the early church and doesn't only exist to justify purgatory (we considered the deuterocanonical books scripture long before the idea of purgatory existed, and Orthodox Christians and continue to recognize these books while rejecting the idea of purgatory). Also beautiful iconography that lifts the soul to heaven, incense, the teachings of the church fathers, etc. are all treasures that the protestant churches lost. Contrary to what protestants believe, we do not worship saints, but the Orthodox idea of the church is that it transcends death and time, and so all the saints who came before us are still living members of the church and we ask for their prayers, just as I ask for prayers from Christians who are still on the earth. We include their icons in our churches in order to remember and feel that they are among us and praying with us, as no doubt they are, and to have the bible visually represented while we pray. Protestants did their best with what they had (the bible), and I'm sure God has blessed that and is able to multiply what we have and make it enough, as He did with the five loaves and two fish. At the end of the day, we all (Orthodox, Catholics and Protestants) share more similarities than we do differences and we all believe in the same God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I just think it's a huge shame that so much tradition was lost in trying to undo the corruption of church doctrine in the middle ages.

@Asier Linazasoro I've always been Orthodox, I am just very interested in history and church history so I read a lot about it. These are the impressions I've developed from this and my experience in my own church and exploring Catholic and Protestant churches. I hope this didn't come across as hate towards the Roman Catholicism, that was not my intention. Catholics are my brothers and sisters in Christ and again, we are more similar than we are different. I think we all hope to see the Christian church united like it was in the bible and share a faith that is closest to what Jesus and the apostles directly passed down to us. That's why I think it's so important to consider these matters. Thank you for correcting me about papal infallibility. I was mistaken in saying that everything the pope says is considered divinely-inspired by the Catholic church. I still find it concerning that the Roman Catholic pope can make a statement that he considers to be divinely-inspired and then have that incorporated as infallible cannon by the church forever. In the early church, things were decided by councils and not by any one individual person.

The east/west schism gave Rome too much power, and like you said, Rome had become a joke. The problems with Roman Catholicism started in 800 AD with the power crazy Frankish emperor Charlemagne, who became emperor of the secular world as well as the Pope of Roman Catholicism. Another 254 years later, not surprisingly there was the east/west schism when Constantinople became excommunicated by the corrupt Papacy. The Papacy then left the One Holy Catholic Apostolic church, the Eastern Orthodox Church.

I was a cradle Catholic. I am 65 years young. I was raised in an extremely devout family. I have a life long friend that is sadden by my leaving. Her son is a Catholic Priest. I was able to tell her I felt great peace in my decision. My last 10 years as a Catholic were filled with inner conflict & turmoil. A few years ago I visited the Vatican. That’s where my mind changed drastically. I felt uneasy there. I felt, I was in a place that worshipped Popes & Catholicism. I wondered if that was how Jesus felt when He walked into the Temple & witnessed the money changers etc. it didn’t feel like a house of G-d. Leaving the Catholic Church was a very difficult decision. But there were far too many reasons I could not stay. There is such freedom & joy knowing I am not ‘responsible’ for my salvation. It’s FREE! My salvation was bought & paid for by my Redeemer, Jesus! The only begotten Son of The Father.

I wish I would have been raised in a devout family. My family was CINO (Catholic in Name Only). I didn't learn much in Catholic school either. Drinking, smoking, swearing and fighting at home, and nasty cliques in school started forming as early as second grade. I saw nothing special about being Catholic and didn't until we got a new traditional priest 8 years ago who speaks the truth and doesn't sugar coat anything. Your friend is right to be sad and if your family remained devout rather than conforming to the culture, they would be too. You are throwing away your inheritance. The truth doesn't care about your "feelings". Feeling peace or feeling uneasy are not indicators of the truth. You didn't know what was in peoples' hearts when you saw them at the Vatican. What should a house of God feel like? I don't think it should look like a rock concert with cappuccinos. It should look as closely as possible to the places where the earliest Christians worshiped, that offered something the world couldn't. And the idea that our sins are forgiven no matter what we do, that there will be no repercussions, well I can't help but think that has been part of the falling apart of our society that we see all around us. Many Catholics have been bad examples like this too.

Again and again I am blown away by the way you are able to relay this info. I say that fully believing in Purgatory. I don't really get how it can be a temporal thing. You're dead, you're in between heaven and earth, and there's such a thing as a year? But we do, most of us, leave this life with earthly attachments, attachments to sin.

Being a Protestant myself, I was familiar with the 5 solas. I knew what they were but this is the first time they clicked in my head as a comprehensive theological point. I always struggled with the concept of faith leading to good deeds. Why would people go out and do good things for no reward; you don't need to keep running after you've won the race and so why would you keep doing good things if you've already been saved by God's grace. But if you don't need to do those good things to benefit yourself, then it only leaves that you're doing those things for others, there is no thought of 'I'm doing this to get into heaven' only to show the glory of God. It also gives clarity to John 13:35 We aren't being told to love one another because it'll give us a reward; we're being told to love eachother because that's the best way to glorify God. We aren't still playing to try and win the game, we've already won, we're still playing because we love the game

What you say on those 5 solas, I totally agree with eventhough I am catholic. I have been in catholic primary school and high school and catholicism was all I ever knew. Until one day I started developing this gift of wanting to know a lot more about God and heaven and staff. It was after my first visit to the Ngome Marian shrine in Kwazulu Natal and what an experience, it was weekend full of nothing but prayer and worship to God. It was enlightening. I then would swear that this is a true church of God, and I knew that there are other denominations out there. Didn't really know much about their teachings except for that they too, teach about God. I then wanted to see why they haven't realised that my church is so true. Went to the worst place ever for this, google search. There you will find protestants who do nothing but persecute the catholic church. But irregardless, they pointed out a few of our practices and called them unbiblical. I then started reading the bible to really learn about what Gods really wants from us people during which I tried to match our church practices to see if they do appear in the bible and I noticed a lot of adherences and a few ditractions here and there. I talked to a few of my catholic fellas about this and they do have their reasonings. I do hear some but I am struggling with some like the second commandment and statues in our church for instance. I guess this makes me a catholic who thinks like a protestant to some degree and I am struggling with this. But I have come to realise that no Church out there is a 100 percent right. Just go to church and worship God and forget the practices.

I was hoping this would be unbiased. Catholics today would agree with many things Luther protested. Clearly you leave out many facts about Luther. True, he was married to a woman who was a Catholic nun. However, he couldn't stop having an affair with another woman so the Church leaders allowed him to marry the other woman as well. Luther did more than sola fide and sola scriptura, he taught that every one had the absolute right of interpretation which blew up in his face as it lead to thousands of denominations (something Luther would regret). When Jesus said, may we all be one as he and the father is one was tossed out the window. Instead of acting rightly and becoming a saint of the Church as many Catholic Reformers, Luther did irreversible damage to the Body of Christ. We are one under Christ. As far as the corruption in the Church, there has always has corruption and always needs renewal (that is because man is a part of it). Protestant churches are no stranger to this. Every time I see a multi-millionaire Protestant pastor reminds me of this truth. Sounds like you really believe in faith alone.... Read Matthew 25. We must cooperate with the gift of salvation. By believing the one saved always saved philosophy, one creates a moral dilemma by believing they can steal, cheat, kill and everything else without eternal consequence. In the end there are too many problems with this talk to elaborate in a single comment.

I've never heard this idea about Luther having an affair and second wife, and I can't find any info on it when I search it. Do you have a source for that? I definitely think Matt way overstates the "genius" of Luther; Lutherans today freely admit Luther's flaws. They would also argue that one can fall away and lose salvation, and Lutheran theologians have always fiercely argued against antinomianism with Law and Gospel theology. So while you definitely make some good points concerning Lutheranism causing disunity in the church, I don't think you're being entirely fair.

@@lyterman- I don't necessarily agree with your comments on Paul and Sola Fide. That is that faith alone is sufficient to gain heaven. Matt 25 puts breaks on that. Besides, the only time "Faith Alone" is in the bible is in the book of James where the word "Not by" is in front of it.

@@lyterman Most people do not understand the Catholic position. We too believe that you cannot earn your way to heaven. We believe we are called to works, however, salvation is first and foremost a gift of grace. To believe that we can earn our way is Pelagian and we do not subscribe to that philosophy of salvation. We do believe we are called to cooperate with the grace of salvation. We also believe that any good that comes from our works goes to God's credit as God is the prime mover in our lives. When we stray from that which has been laid before us, we sin. That is of our own free will. God is merciful and gracious. God wants to forgive us, but we have to come with a contrite heart and true repentance. I see where many believe that Paul teaches faith alone. Consider: Romans 3:28 is a key verse in the differences between traditional Protestants and Catholics. You will notice that Paul says a man is justified by faith (pistei in Greek). When Martin Luther translated the letter to the Romans into German in the sixteenth century, he added the word alone -but alone is not in the original Greek text. The phrase “faith alone” does occur in the New Testament: one time, in James 2:24. There the inspired apostle denies that justification is from faith alone. Let me quote it: “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.” Paul says we are justified by faith, which means we follow God by faith in the works laid out for us. Now consider Matt 25 where the sheep on the right and the goats on the left. The goats did not follow what was expected of them; They did not walk in faith nor cooperate with the good works laid out before them and were cast into the fire. The sheep entered the Kingdom of God as they cooperated with the grace of salvation given to them. In other words, Salvation is by the unmerited grace of God. Walking in faith and cooperation to that faith is our role. Consider Abraham who walked thousands of miles that God would deliver him to the promised land. To carry out this work, he walked in faith.
