The lack of empathy seems to be an epidemic on the internet, the feeling of getting absolutely no consequences being hateful towards someone you don't know is getting out of hand and extremist. That is abuse of free speech, defamation and slander, and only people who can't respect themselves and are so insecure about their achievements would hate so hard on someone else's mistakes.

Totally agree. There's always been haters and trolls on the internet, but those days it feels like it multiplied and everyone gets a pass for being an assh*le because "that's just how the internet is" or "I'm just stating my opinion" and I find that not only bad but hypocrite. Everyone is fine with hating until it targets them or someone they like. A lot of k-pop stans especially should reflect on their words and the impact they can have, instead of seeking hit tweets and social validation for hating a celebrity.

Even if you’re good at sth, when you lose confidence bc of pressure or anxiety or just anything you’ll be afraid of doing it EVEN IF YOU ARE GOOD. I know people who bc of one mistake they did they are made to feel dumb when in reality they aren’t but they start questioning themselves and that also affects how well they do things later. So her being afraid of singing is probably not bc she can’t sing but bc she feels the pressure or is questioning her ability and that was probably carried into the next performances and Coachella. She needs confidence to actually recognize she’s capable of singing well and in return improve. If you don’t believe you are good then it’ll be hard to improve and might even decline. It has little to do with her experience in the industry or her actual abilities. It’s her mental state, she needs support not hate or “criticism”. She needs to be reminded she’s capable. When you talked about the importance for mental health, I connected it to Lia’s situation. In the past few years she had been getting wrecked for “lazy dancing” and her performances continued to decrease in energy as a result. I don’t think anyone (her company and fans) did anything substantial about it, causing her to literally leave the group for a year. You don’t know what you got till it’s gone- because now every hater on the block went from slamming her dancing to hoping she recovered quick. And for what? To slam her again next comeback? I see so many edits about minors in the industry and idols who have passed saying we need to protect idols. However, the general public still hates on anyone who show an ounce of weakness. Let’s face it, kpop idols have way higher expectations than any other singers, and yet often times they perform better than said singers. If they don’t, it’s really not the end of the world. In Coachella, le sserafim were so excited for the opportunity and didn’t do that bad in my opinion. They hyped up the crowd and did the dances well, having fun in the atmosphere. Criticism usually has two parts, recognizing success and notifying the person/people about their weaknesses, but nowhere did I see any praise for the girls. It gets me so upset that some people act like it’s a crime for me to like groups like Le Sserafim and ILL-IT even after poor performances, and force their beliefs on you. The way idols are often coddled in the K-pop industry isn’t doing any favors for the overall scene. I’m not a fan of bullying, but it feels like valid criticism gets labeled as harassment. Fans are quick to rally against bullying comments while brushing aside constructive feedback, often making excuses by pointing to technical or psychological issues. Sakura from LE SSERAFIM, for instance. Sure, mental health can play a huge role in performance, but let’s not ignore vocal ability here. Honestly, I think Sakura struggles with her singing-she often sounds pitchy and can come off as tone-deaf. This raises the question: does mental well-being alone justify subpar vocal performance? We’re seeing a trend where companies seem to prioritize visuals and dance skills over actual singing ability. As this becomes the norm, fans might start lowering their standards, accepting less-than-stellar vocals. I mean, even during encore performances, some idols, including Sakura and probably the whole group, often look a bit lost. With over a decade in the industry, including her days with AKB48, you'd think there would be some noticeable improvement in her technique. Instead, her voice still has that shaky quality, likely a result of not getting the proper training back in the day. It’s a bit rough to admit, but it seems some idols just don’t have the vocal chops to shine. You can chase your dream all you want and achieve your dream of performing in front of millions of people, but listening to her makes me dream that I'm deaf instead( exaggerating). The industry often puts forward idols who may not be ready for the spotlight, leading to harsh criticism that can really mess with their confidence and mental health-all just to line the pockets of the labels. At the end of the day, it would be great for the K-pop industry to reassess what it values. Focusing on nurturing genuine talent rather than just looks and choreography could help raise the bar for performances and keep the integrity of the genre intact.

Thank you so much for providing a sensible take! These people don’t actually care if the lsf girls can sing or not, they just want to find a new target to relentlessly bully. The girls have improved since their Coachella performance and have, according to this documentary, been taking vocal lessons - exactly what we as a community wanted to see, yet the hate still persists. It’s obvious to anyone who takes more than a few seconds to think about the situation that what they were receiving quickly developed beyond simple constructive criticism. They were receiving hate about their vocals on simple selfie posts, on videos absolutely unrelated to their singing abilities, they even had to disable all of their instagram comments. The cycle repeats every year, a gg gets bullied to no end for something that never warrants such an extreme reaction, a year or a few years later everyone suddenly switches up and feigns sympathy, claiming “they didn’t deserve the hate, we should collectively apologize to them” before finding a new target to bully. This community only cares about mental health if it benefits them. It’s sad to see misogyny still being so prevalent, especially knowing how often it’s perpetuated by female fans of girl groups. There are boy groups who have members that aren’t exceptional singers or performers, who also occasionally mess up and sound out of breath and make mistakes on stage (which are all normal things that happen to any performer) and they get nowhere near the amount of hate (which wouldn’t be deserved anyways!) or even criticism that could be used in a positive way to improve.

Honestly, a complete lack of empathy started years ago. I noticed when COVID hit people just… stopped caring about others? They got meaner and meaner. And now it’s the norm. Gen Z and Gen Alpha (I’m Gen Z btw) make “jokes” that are actually just thinly veiled hate comments. They look at people crying and either laugh or think “well my life is worse so stop crying.” Empathy has left the chat for so many people. And as someone who gets easily emotional, especially when others are, it’s hard. I have a hard time not crying watching people win and lose at the Olympics ffs. Idols are REAL people. They struggle just like we do. Being an idol is their JOB and if we’re so big on not harassing people at work then we need to extend that to ALL people. It hurts me to see that I got more into LSF when all this hate hit them. I don’t understand. I’ll never understand. Kindness is free people.

Letting the internet raise kids instead of making them go the hell outside and build actual healthy relationships partly created this problem. It’s not just a kpop thing. If it was fair criticism, people would praise the improvement they have quickly showcased but they decided to stay stuck on compilations of mistakes since hate is what it’s really about

i think with the idolization, they put these idols on a pedstal. By extension, I think there's also a sense of inferiority (wow, she's so pretty, I could never be as cool as her etc etc) which makes them happy when they see the idols make mistakes, since it feeds their egos (even i could sing better than her, she sounds like a goat) and combined with group polarization and anonymity it makes them vicious and intent on tearing the idol down because even after all this they still don't really see the idol as human. writing it down idk if it makes sense lol in other words they view the kpop idols as an out-group (ap psych kids know what im talking about lol) because they're "so cool and so different from us" so once they start making mistakes it's also easier to bully them without feeling guilt or empathy

@snowflower26855 ай бұрын
As a girl group and boy group stan I'd say there are 3 main differences: 1. lots of girl group stans are multi stans whereas boy group stans often stick to 1 group almost obsessively - generally resulting in girl group stans being more likely to compare groups and call out their problems (and turn into haters), whilst boy group stans refuse to acknowledge problems to a whole new level, so they have fan wars instead (just endless my group is better than yours etc. which in a way is it's own endless cycle of toxicity since it gets really nasty). Girl groups have them too ofc but boy group stans take it to the next level 2. Girl groups tend to appeal more to the general public so more people are familiar with them - so more people to hate on them. 3. Misogyny, including a lot of internalised misogyny in young girls - I'm sure there are people who've done much better explanations than I feel I can... I should also mention that the occasional boy group will crop up and get a lot of really bad hate, like Stray Kids did right after debut, before they actually blew up, which was weird. But yes it's definitely girl groups who get these massive hate trains 99% of the time. There's got to be more to it, but that's all that's coming to mind for now.
@wonderlucky19125 ай бұрын
Hi I agree with you, I started to realize that how more and more girl groups goes through a hate train at some point of their career(some hate trains are more inhumane and intense than others like you mentioned for Aespa, IVE, ITZY, and now LeSserafim.) •I would also like to include also NMIXX & Kep1er have both experience hate trains (in a way still to this day). From the amount of times I have seen people hate on the NMIXX & Kep1er members online unprovoked since both of the groups debuts in 2022. It’s hurts to see since both the NMIXX & Kep1er members have express in the past that they have lost confidence because of this. I am glad that the NMIXX & Kep1er members are doing better now. sakura may be rich and beyond experienced, but that does not justify the horrific way she has been treated by the kpop community. and despite how easy it is to do a little bit of research into sakura and singing as a whole, some of you are completely unwilling to take a look around and realize that there are way more factors to sakura's current voice than just "not practicing." 1) SAKURA ISN'T SINGING IN HER RANGE: any singer will tell you that singing outside your range is difficult at best and painful at worst. this poses a huge threat for sakura because she's been singing in an extremely high vocal range since she was 13 yrs old. *13 YEARS OLD*!!!! I'm no vocal expert, but singing that high during her developmental years likely had a huge affect on her range and her vocal cords in general. such early beginnings of poor habits and vocal damage likely made it extremely difficult for her to suddenly sing lower songs (aka lsf's tracklist). 2) SHE LOST HER CONFIDENCE!!!!!: she went from one of the most adored idols in Japan to the most hated in Korea (and that's BEFORE the we're-all-bullying-sakura campaign). anyone with an ounce of empathy would realize that such a dramatic shift would be jarring if not absolutely devastating for sakura's self-confidence. and the docuseries has shown that this change has, in fact, affected her! which is completely human and not unexpected!! idols are people who have feelings (even as grown adults) because life is hard no matter how rich or experienced one might be. and for those of you saying she needs to "grow up" or "keep crying", who hurt you?? seriously, get a psych evaluation. (/hj) 3) SHE IS TERRIFIED: we might as well talk about the main arguing point of netizens: a lack of practice. people claim sakura doesn't practice enough, but the clip from the docuseries tells us otherwise. not only that, the clip depicts how anxious sakura is in the practice room and how much she fears being ridiculed (a totally normal fear btw). "flight" is a common anxiety response, so it would make complete sense to me if her response to a stressful scenario (singing/practicing) would be to avoid it at all costs. thankfully, sakura does not always avoid practices and seems to have a fighting spirit so there is still hope for her!

That she feels the need to be,this big idol that changes the way the kpop industry works Kazhuka is trying to just better herself and question if it’s all worth it Eunchae is dealing with breathing problems and thinks low of herself Sakura has anxiety and questions everything she is worth. These girls need a break. A big fat break especially having to deal with the constant bulking and pressure from everyone. Another thing about the constructive criticism is that it’s no longer that. It’s bulking like you said it’s just a big excuse to tear idols down. It needs to change.
@Jungwxc5 ай бұрын
Yeah I think Hybe should give the group a Hiatus . For their mental health but also for their improving etc. Oh and actually Eunchae doesn’t have breathing problems. That just happens when you did too much sport , in her case dance , their Dance teacher also said that

@@Jungwxc ur right about the breathing part my bad lmao😭😭. But yeah the girls def need a break they aren’t big the right mindset for anything right now. And now they’re having a comeback this ain’t for one…

“They’re idols, they need to be able to take the heat.” I 100% agree. But, this is just straight up bullying at this point. If I could tell every idol out there, as a fan, you don’t owe the public everything. You owe them SOME things, but NOT everything. And these “fans” are comfortable making these “criticisms” because they don’t have to be in their shoes. Bring these hateful people up on stage and see they soil themselves in a matter of seconds. I guarantee you not many people can face legitimately the world and survive it. But these idols did and do.
@xstrawberryaveryx95505 ай бұрын
I understand the criticism of the vocals, they did need improvement, but they were already good. They probably just didn’t have a concept that suited the vocals or they didn’t sing in their suited vocal ranges. You can say that and still compliment their talents and achievements, but downright bullying them by saying they can’t sing is completely different.
@nonamenosurname61275 ай бұрын
I agree your words about mental health. It is same on almost every topic. We want fun interactions between idols until they really interact and get hate for it. We want dating to be normalized in kpop until Karina dates a man and has to publicly apologize for it and break up eventually. Idols really can't make mistakes (I am talking in general not just in Le sserafims case).

I haven't even watched the documentary, because nothing they can say, or the comments can say will change my mind. They need/needed to improve, sure, but no one deserves the slander, hate and down right bullying they got. It's hilarious in a very sadistic way how hyprocrites kpop "fan" can be. Hybe is consistent in giving lackluster vocal lesson and stellar dance lessons, yet people are surprise when groups are basically dancing machine. It's disgusting the lack of empathy these girls got. Sure the clip of Sakura saying she scared of singing has a "simple" solution either stop or train, but what dumb people wouldn't think that she has not done or thought about it too. Shameful it's my last comment to the haters

This reminds me of the Jennie hate train all over again. A Kpop idol will give less than stellar performances; a bunch of people will (rightfully) give constructive criticism; haters will see the criticism and will take it as a chance to bash the group and therefore starts bashing them; then a wave of fans will come bashing anyone that says anything about the group (constructive or not) and start calling anyone that points out any of the flaws in the idol as being a "bully" which with fuel the actual bullies as they feel more justified to be even meaner because they think the idol is being "coddled".

At the end of the day, those bullies are probably just very sad people who probably hate their job and/or salary and get salty from seeing other people be rich, so it's really easy for them to type little comments on the internet to let out their rage and discomfort for their own life, you can tell by the dedication they take to just rip to shreds a person they don’t even know 🤦🏻♀️

Okay, for those who are insisting on the "constructive criticism is vital for singers" route (which I totally agree), I would like to prove with another example that this is not what this video is talking about. Take Lia's example. She was literally the best singer of ITZY and had to take a break for the terrible amount of hate she was getting for not being as a good dancer as the other members. So is the hate really about singing? Or dancing? Or hating women in kpop is literally normalized at this point? Guys I have no hate in ny heart when I say that Jimin has been progressively losing his voice over bad managenent of Big Hit for years now, and even though he has always (I got into BTS and kpop in 2015) received criticism for it, it was never to this proportion. So let's be for real. Real criticism is needed and this wave of demanding good singing for literal singers is very healthy for kpop. But this hate that has been taking place for women in kpop is out of hand and needs to stop. It ruined 2ne1, we lost Sulli and Goo Hara, the girl from Twice also had to take a break and the list literally goes on for years over different reasons but the same way of HATING.

This is the best video I’ve ever seen explaining the situation. She’s not saying le sserafim are amazing at singing and that they won’t need a bit of training. This not dismissing the problem, but trying to eliminate the situation they’re in. I agree, these girls don’t deserve the hate they have been getting. People never wanted them to improve anyway, and even if they did, people would still bring up the same nasty stuff they say now. It’s not criticism, it’s straight up harassment they’re getting.
@lindsey46204 ай бұрын
I feel that le sserafim was rushed and half baked as a group and the only blame I have is to the company. I think they keep throwing the group into things they’re unprepared for. Sending them to Coachella was cruel bc they couldn’t use as much backing vocals so they would’ve needed to train differently. They didn’t have a huge catalogue of songs to pick from for their performance. (Aespa was sent to Coachella too early, too imo - like I would start considering sending them NOW). Idk why they decided to bring in Sakura knowing she does better in higher pitched singing, again it’s pure cruelty

I completely agree your your commentary on this whole hate. I believe the hate about their vocals has blended and become multiplied by the whole MinHyeJin/Hybe/NewJeans/SourceMusic drama... In MHJ first press conference she already painted a bull's eye on Le Sserafim regarding the whole "Hybe's first girl group" stupidity and specifically mentioned Sakura as the reason their group was given preference... blah blah... What I mean to say is that these girls are not just receiving criticism and hate for their own actions regarding their abilities -- they have become the easy scapegoat for anyone who is on MHJ side and everyone who jumps at any opportunity to pour hate on anything to do with HYBE because... HYBE = BTS = Hybe Groups are successful... and are a threat to their faves or I don't even know! As an ARMY, we are way too used to it but I hope all of this only makes the group and fearnot stronger. This documentary ends right before Easy era starts, and that letter from Sakura on Weverse after Coachella gives me hope that they have the mindset to not let it all destroy them. Thank you for this video, so welcome amidst all the hate!

I never leave comments, but...in light of seeing my bias, Sakura, cry and all the diabolical hate she's receiving (along with the other members of course), my mind immediately thought of Sulli. She was another bias of mine who's no longer here because of this same exact incident. And she endured it for YEARS, almost her entire career, all while she tried to keep a smile on her face. I will hope and pray, God forbid, that history does not repeat itself. It's like this community learned nothing. Absolutely NOTHING. Seriously, the kpop fandom need to do better. Please remember, all idols are all still human beings who make mistakes and learn just like us. Don't treat them as non-human, and remember that they have genuine feelings. That's how we have more blood on our hands. Yes, she isn't immune to constructive criticism, even a bit of harsh constructive criticism, because she's been in the industry for so long and does need to show improvement now when she hasn't displayed any, and I have my own frustrations with her even as she is my bias. But there is a well-defined line between criticism and hate.

You just gained a new subscriber. Thank you, being vocally for decency even when it's futile is something I admire. It's so good to hear somebody push back on the insanity that is the online hate train towards the gg target of the day. It feels like it's never gonna stop: even if LS escapes, there's gonna be a new target. It's never about the purported "issue", it's a public lynching that people pile on as soon as they smell blood in the water.

yes their vocals are lacking, no they don't deserve to be bullied and shamed for it. crazy how people blur the line between criticism and downright bullying

Like literally. People really need to learn the difference between criticism and hate because they're both two very different things. I saw someone comment on a post about eunchae and they said that they saw a comment telling eunchae to go kill herself. I'm sorry? How is that criticism? That's literal hate and harassment. Crazy how people can disguise hate as so called "criticism".

There was a time in K-pop back when this video of Jennie saying she didn't go into the internet or searched her name online went viral, it was close to the time when we unfortunately lost Sulli and Hara (I say this with no means to trivialise these tragedies). A lot of people seemed to gain consciousness around idols' mental health because they were faced with the consequences of their actions, of all the hate they were throwing at them. I wish K-pop stans these days realised the same before it's too late again

Yeah man, their vocals need more work but it's not like they killed your family cat or something. There's no reason to be mad at them. Like let them take the constructive criticism and prepare for their next comeback. If you don't like them then don't listen to them.

i love how you differentiated constructive and destructive criticism. these haters need to know the difference between the two because it is not bad to give opinions and criticisms since these idols' jobs are well, basically, to sing and dance. lesserafim have improved and still need to improve no matter how great they already are. there is always room for improvement and throwing death and (g)rape threats is not the way for any idols to improve.
@ca_lsrf4 ай бұрын
it was never about giving constructive criticism. it was pure hate, and also about gaining attention and likes. and boy does le ssersfim has that reach. considering that the group has been doing live performances since after Coachella, and they improved, and yet people rather ignore that and instead keep going on this hate train...well, who are truly the attention seekers? but also, to the fans...STOP ENGAGING WITH THE HATERS. dont give them the satisfaction of your reaction or your time. just focus on the supporting the group and move on as well from them, they wont stop anyway.

Idk what this video is about yet, I'm only at the beginning, but lemme say this: seeing Lesserafim talked about for their vocals, whose to say the people who say this are actually critiquing them. Some ktubers, kpop stans etc. use situations like these to hate on groups under the guise of critiques or giving opinions on them.
@jojostoenail21624 ай бұрын
Criticizing their vocals is understandable they need a new vocal coach for sure the coach doesn’t even exercise their voice he just makes them continuously try to sing their parts. And they are passionate performers. Hate beyond this is truly unacceptable and disrespectful

Hate is not correct, however, criticism is, and so is dissatisfaction when you are a paying costumer. Sakura is an idol, this is her job, she is being payed, she choose this career. I don´t personally agree with the hate towards Sakura, but it is undeniable that the criticism towards her is justified. The documentary is Hybe´s responsability, therefore the pity party being thrown for her wasn´t her idea, however as the one who made the mistakes on stage, she either improves and moves on with her career, or keeps making excuses like she has for the last 10 years. That being said it is important to stop spreading hate and bullying, but let´still hold her to the criticism.
