Ensar Oud Talks About The Value of Oud

Taha of Agar Aura here. I am speechless. As I am currently in the process of rolling out our first-ever perfume sprays collection, I had been thinking of putting together a video to show why I'm doing what I'm doing. Then I saw this video. Ensar's already said it all. 🤷‍♂️

Side note: most prolly don't even know this, but it was Ensar who first had the idea of creating REAL natural sprays with REAL oud in them, and he was urging me to do this as he was sitting beside me in my home here in Kuala Lumpur, with an oud distillation running not 2 yards away (yep, I used to cook all my oils at home, before I rented my own distillation factory for all our oils). This was back in Nov 2016 if I recall correctly, well before there were any all-natural sprays in the market containing real oud.

I have been a huge fan of Ensar Oud and his work for a few years now. The name always meant artistry and authenticity of the highest kind. You always knew you are getting what you paid for and more. And this when the market was full of frauds selling synthetic gunk in the name of oud. I have been blessed to have a decent amount of his oud oils,attars and parfums and they have added so much to my life and enriched it in an undescribable way. Brandon,i have been following your channel since you had just a few subscribers and it has been such a great experience to see you discover the world of oud and other naturals. Awesome video, i totally agree, i have held these views for a while, but just keep doing what i am doing for those who want real perfume. And those who want pretend perfume can go to the high stores. Great to know he feels this way about your channel and supporting the natural perfume / materials. His attars were my first taste of real quality, and then his ouds shortly after maybe 6 years ago now. I have been chasing quality ever since.

The modern perfumes give little information about what they put in, i feel it is very important to know what is in a perfume though, like Ensar said, advertising an oud fragrance with no oud in is a clear heist. I want to me as transparent as i can without giving away my exact formula.

Yeah that's the big thing. I think there are ways to do it. And especially when you start doing your own distilling and tincturing even if people tried there is no way. As the material will differ and your knowledge and stamp on perfume can never be duplicated by someone else. Only synthetics come close as you get a read out from a machine and the material has no life or changes at all.

But the amounts I keep to myself, and i feel that can encourage people to experiment themselves with ratios and find their creative stamp. I firmly believe each perfumer should find their own style and that comes practically from experimentation.

@@TherapeuticFragrance good stuff, he just forgot that he has oils like Kyara Koutan, Royal Kinam, Kyara LTD, Kyara Sayang, Assam Kinam, and others that contain no kyara or kinam. According to him, that's the same robbery as Tom Ford's Oud Wood that has no oud.

@@TherapeuticFragrance He received much backlash from the oud community and fellow vendors for doing the exact thing he's now preaching against concerning naming products, you may not know that. Talk of kyara and kinam in write ups and showing pieces of kinam wood, just as he claims Tom Ford wanted to borrow a piece of his oud wood to show for their product, in each case both contain none of what's being shown or talked about. Nearly 20 products and none of them explicitly state or give the disclaimer that they contain no kyara or kinam, which defies transparency, is robbery according to his criteria, and gives his statements about the matter absolutely no foot to stand on. He must've forgot.

I can understand where Ensar is coming from, and if I was him (and go through the sacrifices and hard work to bring to the world these amazing oud oils) I'd have the same view too. But for me as a consumer (and this is just my opinion by the way), I enjoy both genuine ouds and synthetic ouds in fragrances, both for different reasons. For genuine ouds from say Ensar, Feel Oud, House of Misk etc, I love wearing them in solitude, when I'm at home for the day alone, reading a book, watching tv or whatever, the experience is incredible, the nuances you get from real genuine oud oils is unmatched, and it's a special feeling, I love wearing it while praying also. Now for synthetic ouds, say some of my favourites such as Dyptiques Oud Palao or Indonesian Oud by Zenga, I love and enjoy wearing these when I go out for a meal with friends or even wearing these to work, and going to formal events like weddings. My mind is busy, so i'm not able to fully dissect or appreciate the scent, so for me in these situations i almost find wearing genuine oud a waste, for me genuine oud is best enjoyed in solitude, where you can really concentrate on the development of the oud on your skin. Another thing is for commercial companies like Tom Ford or Xerjoff, using synthetic oud makes a lot of sense, it helps with batch control, i'd personally find using genuine oud in these a waste, as oud for me is best worn neat or used in artisinal blends either in attars or high end sprays like Areej Le Dore. Considering the situation with Oud trees (wild trees becoming extinct in certain regions) and the practises by some distillers (for some cultivated oud trees), I almost don't want these large companies using real ouds, i can imagine the situation becoming worse, and price for oud could sky rocket due to demand. In terms of these companies using the name oud in their bottles, i'm not sure man i think it's fine, i think we just need to be educated by these things. I don't think the brands are claiming to use the real thing, it's an interpretation of the note, say for example the note of Amber. I think the normal guy out there who buys Tom Ford doesn't even care if it's real oud or not. I guess i'm an educated consumer when it comes to this, when I want the real thing I go for the real thing like my bottle of Oud Yusuf from Ensar, when I want to enjoy an interpretation of Oud using synthetics I reach for my M7 or Oud Ispahan. I think there's a place for both, and both can be enjoyed for different reasons. It's like comparing a fancy 5* michelin restaurant to mcdonalds, both have their place, and both can be enjoyed. I could go on for a while, but this is a super interesting video, and it's a topic i've had in mind for a while, before i even watched the video. I think i'll cover it on my channel. What a response. A lot of stuff here I might touch more later. Your restaurant example let's keep it here. Mcdonald's was sell a hamburger and only put 3 percent hamburger in it. They finally got exposed and was part in hurting there business a few years age. They start a campaign for 100% beef like you should have to say it. The sole problem is it's not oud and they make no effort in communicating it and they sale it for the value of oud. Brother that is a scan. You probably buy all these fragrances on discounters because companies still profit there. Not fair for people who compose with real oud. I'm more than fair to the smell it's good not what were talking about. Its the false advertising plain and simple. Quite surprised by your answer. Do you pay full price for your designers? That might away your opinion a bit.

@@TherapeuticFragrance by the way brother, if you or anyone totally disagrees with me, that is absolutely fine, it's just my opinion, and I'm sure most don't agree with it, which is fine. This hobby, we all have different tastes and views, so it's all fine. This is a topic you and many others feel strongly about, and I can understand why. It's similar to how I hate clones but some in this community don't have such a strong feeling about them as I do. In terms of marketing, if they're claiming it's real, then it is wrong. But if it's just calling it Oud without saying it's real, tbh I don't think they'll ever be a day that they'll put an advisory sticker to say it's synthetic, even though it would make sense haha.

You are right Kyle. It's an uphill battle. They not only judge it on synthetic oud over half of them think it is real oud. Give yourself some credit you are doing a good thing on Facebook. I one of the first to bring all these guys together and it's a tough feat. But some causes it's important to do it for. Especially our love of this oil. Your story is one of the most powerful. We don't keep in touch much, but I'm always aware of you and the group.

Epic video! This is such an important topic, it's really awesome to see you putting it out there and keeping it real. Something people should think about even if they like those corporate brands is the fact that they're paying real oud prices for cheap synthetics, it's a total sham. They put 'oud' in the name so they can triple the price without any merit or actual value added whatsoever. I think that there is a movement picking up steam where people will stop giving their dollars to these corporate entities that are social engineering their consumerism. Same with music. People want real natural ingredients, real music, real connections with other people instead of a digital interface. They want to support their friends, neighbors, and local businesses. You wouldn't know it by looking at instagram, but even some of the younger generation are already moving away from this fake sense of self and back to what's real. Absolutely love this video Brandon, and you are the one who introduced me to oud in the first place way back with Areej's Malik al Taif video and it's been an amazing journey ever since, so thank you!

Great video. I agree about transparency in the ingredients of perfume. Almost all retailers make bold claims of natural materials. Companies should have to put “Oud accord” or similar for all synthetic ingredients in the notes list or ingredients list on the box.

I would also argue that the perfumes listed in the beginning as best ouds don’t remotely smell like real oud and I’m guessing most people don’t even spend the time to experience raw materials before coming up with the fake version for a scent.

This same point about oud is also true about jasmine, tuberose, saffron, Sandalwood etc. There are probably only a handful of perfumes with real gardenia in the whole world and consider how big a category that is.

Indeed we have to start somewhere. I chose my favorite ingredient and the favorite of many passionate people like Ensar. And it's also the most costly. So we might as well go to the top of the mountain first. Each deserve there own spotlight and it's time there is another side to this conversation. It has has to little of a voice for far too long.

Absolutely- I it through oud we can get a better conversation going and help people to respect the real stuff and understand that many naturals are still synthetic. Conversations like this one really allow people to comprehend what has been going on in “designer” perfume for so long. Tom Ford Oud Minerale smells absolutely like no oud in the world but it’s defining what people think oud smells like. Great and helpful video. As you know I enjoy some of the synthetic ouds (like Oud Ispahan) and I haven't been able to try the real deal really, but I plan to when I'm able to. I mainly follow the comment by Handsome Smells: for the average consumer, both have a place and it's also hard to expect everyone to do the research and see through the facade. However, when it comes to marketing and using the name oud when its not used, that should be tackled (and that goes for more ingredients btw, I've been annoyed by reading 'cachmere wood' in notes list for example).

I am not hating on those fragrances I have reviewed them fairly and own some. It's exactly how you put it. Marketing it as though it's the real thing and charging for it. I really appreciate your voice here. I am not saying those compositions should go away just full transparency so people know they are not smelling this oil that takes people like Ensar lots of work to get. The knowledge of distillation alone is not like just picking up and ordering the synthetic which me or you could do.

Agree with those who say there is a place for natural and synthetics in the industry.However, there is no place for false advertisement which is just plain wrong, unacceptable and should be duly punished. They are fraudulently stealing market share from vendors who sell the real thing as well as devaluing their product.Those perfumes should be treated the same as counterfeit goods and thus banned from the high street. Brands who wish to use synthetic oud should be forced to declare it or use terms like 'fools oud' or something. Sad to say but Ensar has been voicing these views for a number of years now without any real change in public perception/policy.If he really wants to change that, maybe his only avenue of recourse is to go to a bigger platform with millions of followers.It doesn't necessarily have to be a perfume channel, but one that works in the sphere of health and beauty or fashion.Otherwise I think this concern will just remain amongst the small niche of oud enthusiasts and nothing will be done. FloatingMan the big thing is it can't be Ensar alone. It has to be all of us. Only a small amount and it will work, but we have to be all on message. That's how companies change. One trend on a platform effects big companies. Even with a bigger channel it's one big hit then forgotten. All real change comes from a ground swell friend. #realoud All of us just put it in the bottom of your pics on Instagram that contain oud. It can happen. I for one really think Creed saw this coming thus the selling of the business.

Agree with everything. If the mass market did use real oud the price per bottle would be astronomical to keep their profit margins. That's another point I'm trying to get people to see. These guys are not up charging that much for what you get.

I cut my teeth on Montale and Mancera. Graduated to Swiss Arabian and now only search Ensar, Adam, Dak and Assam. Enough providence to last a lifetime. Hey Mike thanks for the response. I have taken the deep wave of naturals and don't buy into the fact the IFRA is out for my safety. They are out for my money and helping many companies achieve that who feed into the big three synthetic monsters. Perfumers that have preserved natural material like the ones you mentioned and many more in the works, keep me going.

@@TherapeuticFragrance Thanks for the immediate response. Shows your passion and dedication to whatever task you are undertaking. Until April, I worked in the Paint industry, selling paints. One thing for sure, painters do not have a long life expectancy as would a carpenters etc. As a kid, I got out of the paint industry because virtually the only guarantee one had was a short life and throat or lung cancer @ the end. Naturals come from the earth, if there will be an immediate reaction by either A rash or allergy. Synthetics are a slow death as in Round-Up. I'm sure there are thousands of fragrance lovers who have shelled out thousands of dollars for a mantle full of carcinogen causing chemicals to pour in their bodies. The skin ingests any chemical we lay or spray upon it? I'm not a doctor, but just follow the paper trail. One pays $300 for a $50 glass bottle containing 4 bucks worth of synthetic juice? I will proudly give my hard earned money to Ensar who spends a lifetime of knowledge and dedication to bless his fragrance family with these beautiful and wondrous scents. Your on to something here. It's sad there main argument is rashes against naturals freaking rashes. And people over look all the dangers you just mentioned. I am working with experts in the field to educate more on this subject and have it on video. When we broach this area want to have fact backed up by someone who makes it there life to study. I don't think anything will ever be more confrontational than what Ensar just laid out, but it's only needed a few times to light a fire.

@@TherapeuticFragrance I had a Blue Star Paint chemist explain the effects of lead, mercury, Xylol and many ketones. His answer is one we all should remember "the human body has no ability to remove and dispose of these hazards once it has entered our bloodstreams? The hazards are clear and present, the question is simply, "How much of these hazards can your body hold?" If baby talc can cause or promote cancer, imagine what these lethal ingredients can we safely take. Does the line form now so we can collect in 10, 20 or 30 years? Like Bush 41 said, "just follow the money". I suggest you start with OSHA analysis of harmful chemicals to follow the green lined road. Keep on with God, family and your passion for a beautiful, yet unknown world of fragrances. Thank you

Question. I am relatively new to boutique fragrances & even newer to the world of our, which I love BUT is there such a thing as synthetic oud? When I began my oud journey, I read that a synthetic version of oud had/could not be created.

Louis Vuitton has 3 oud fragrances. Now they say it’s real from Assam. If it is real they probably put a pinch in to cover there ass, and the rest synthetic. My give away is usually that mass produced company’s can’t get there hands on enough oud to keep producing so many bottles year after year, and the smells don’t change. I’ve been reading a lot that there isn’t a lot of oud out there right now. I’m new to this topic so I don’t know but I what I do know is that there’s a lot of bs going on in the world. Yes this could be true is a lot of it. I know some have in first releases then reformulate as well. The main takeaway I hope is transparency and not trying to sell an authentic oud perfume at oud prices.

Interesting video well done. It’s all a bit misleading especially for those not in the know and they think thy are buying something expensive. How far will the fragrance marketing go, it used to be cologne, edt and edp and you knew what strength you were buying, no rip off. But now we have extrait de parfum which probably isn’t extrait strength and now we have elixir which sounds very concentrated but probably is just edp and while we are at it what the hell is acqua di gio PROFUNDO

Hey Namora I have never tried Abdul Samad Al Qurashi. Anyone able to do 50% off I always have to question the authenticity of ingredients. But I would have to try before saying anything. It's the nose.

There is not enough natural oud, musk or ambergris for everybody to try, nor is it sustainable to be used in designer perfumes such as Tom Ford. Hence why perfumers are hired to formulate, recreate and/or interpret the scent of such materials which in itself is a talent and an Art form. End of the day if it smells good, it is good and if you can afford it buy it. Art is worth what anyone is willing to pay for it. What’s dishonest is when a perfume house claims that it’s product is all natural when they know that it isn’t. As for perfume in general, anyone with a basic understanding will know and expect that most ingredients these days are synthetic. These synthetics are meant to be an estimation of the original. People who buy musk laundry detergent won’t be outraged to learn there’s no actual musk in it.

Cindy like Ensar said would you be happy to buy Gold at current prices and get home only to realize it is fake? A lot of oud is actually more costly than gold. Thus the strong point of the video and picking oud as the ingredient. There are a lot of more points to touch on here. I have many friends that can't have synthetics in materials. I for one break out in rashes with the laundry detergents. I have to make a big effort to find none of it in mine. It shoudn't be that hard for transparency. Interpreting the scent is no problem to me, it's just telling me that's what it is so I can decide for myself what I want to buy. They won't do that because currently there pricing is as though it were natural, that needs adjusted.

Great words, I agree completely I know many people would buy those fake oud perfume but they would be like oh it's so expensive when you buy a real great oil from ensar, taha and so on its just many people don't care and it's how they educated on zzzz

Yes, thank you. Real Oud oil in anything is different. Once you are familiar with the material there is no going back. To this day I know of perfumers trying to trick people. For the most part when pressed perfumers will disclose the truth.

I'm no expert but I have a sample of the Louis Vuitton. It's fecal, strong, balsamic and bitter. Very well may be synthetic but it smells like oud in this one.

But playing the devils advocate the naming and marketing of so called oud fragrances is just that, it's the note, the smell of oud. It's not oud, it a smell just like rose or citrus or green or basalmic. None the less it's sick marketing...

Definitely exactly the point I am trying to make. The marketing works until it doesn't and when it doesn't the ones who get hurt are the one that built the name of the material. Over 50% of people have no clue they aren't wearing the real stuff yes that goes into other materials, but chose the most precious one to be a fire started to this argument.

Although total understanding that no brand out there should trick their customers into stating something on the bottle and contain something completely different in it, but imaging how many trees had to be cut down for all those ca 10000000 bottles to put "real Oud" in these! Roham this is a tuff one for me. We really do have a gigantic inside joke on the world who think they know what oud is because they rushed out and bought one of the popular designers off of a discounter. Or worse the Creed boutique at full price. Ouch imagine how much good oil you could get for that $500 plus bottle.

@@TherapeuticFragrance Well, my point is that the world would be a worse place if there was a real Oud in all the perfumes out there. And I don't think ethical cultivation of Oud could have responded to the demand for Oud anyway because the process is so slow and time consuming. But yes, KZbinr`s and professionals have to shed light on the fact that big houses like Creed-Dior- Chanel etc are fooling people. I personally believe from the exploding demand for perfumes that a major revolution in the industry is in sight. Either way, keep up the good work

We would have to go on a one on one basis. It's an overview that most perfumes on the market that contain Oud in the name are using the synthetic version of Oud.

Great video! Creed Royal Oud is great fragrance but it should be called Royal Cedar or Royal Wood. Just like their Original Santal is supposed to have Mysore Sandalwood. Such nonsense. So deceitful. Scents I love that are supposed to have Oud are Creed Royal Oud , Floris Honey and Leather Oud Nasamotto Pardon and Amouage Jubilation XXV but I’m afraid after seeing this video I’ve never smelled real oud.

Never tried Arabian Oud. The OG amouage attars did use oud. I have tried many newer one, but none that have an oud note in them. I do own a couple of the attars they are unreal.

I don’t think (as far as marketing goes) this is any different than naming a perfume with “Rose Something-or-other” and using an accord or synthetic rose (or any other note). The problem is now real oud is rare, and those searching for perfumes with that ingredient really care if it is real or not (to justify the price bc of the rarity). It does seem like the articles are positioning these scents as having REAL oud, but yes, it should be clarified in the notes as real or synthetic. Another issue might be hijacking what is used in religious ceremony and disrespecting it by using synthetic oud but taking advantage of its perceived value. So maybe the religious aspect differentiates this from “jasmine.” But they aren’t naming it as “Real Oud” by Tom Ford. It’s just a descriptor. I don’t see the outrage with using other ingredient name being used where no real ingredient by that name is used. Transparency is needed, and should be required. It’s deceptive, sure, but I don’t think they are lying. If someone is looking for the therapeutic benefits of oud, they will find the real stuff, right?

Modern perfumers recreate the smell of many other natural materials using aroma chemicals. In fact naturals are just a complex mixture of chemicals extracted by different techniques. Creativity in perfumery should be judge by the skill of the perfumer in creating a interesting blend not the materials used. We have plenty of rose, gardenia, sandalwood, tuberose perfumes without any of the naturals in it. Why should Oud be any different ? isnt the value of the perfume the message convey but the perfumer's fantasy?

Two different subjects completely Gus. I have done more than a fair job judging all compositions. Not what this video is about. Oud is highlighted because it is the most expensive ingredient. This is about charging for a substance as though it were real and making no effort to alert the public of it's authenticity. With your argument as long as something were painted gold and you enjoyed it's look. The vendor could go buy a fake gold piece and resell what ever he wanted to as though it were real gold. Oud happens to hold more value than gold in a lot of cases. And to take an aroma chemical and charge as though it were the real thing, well you might be okay with it, but it is un ethical. If the perfumer doesn't care to use the real ingredient just be transparent and tell us the exact material they are using. Transparency is always key especially in artistic expression. Nobody wants a knockoff Picasso at. Picasso prices. It spreads to any discipline. It's a matter of ethics and Ensar said it better than I ever could.

As a(hobbyist) perfumer, I have come full circle. From naturals only, to boosting naturals with aroma chems and straight aroma chems...back to living, breathing, vibrating naturals. Mix all the chemical molecules you like but it will still be missing that small percentage a MSGC cant pick up and imo the life spirit that is the medicine of naturals that cant be produced in a lab.

Of course none of those perfumes have real Oud, it’s all accords. You can tell by the price first and then by the smell. Once u smell REAL Oud, u can always tell if a perfume has Oud.. You have to always consider, if they put a tiniest drop of real Oud in a perfume, they can claim there’s real Oud in their fragrance. And u won’t smell it. Yes it’s ethically wrong. But they ALL do it. Nobody cares, most ppl just want what’s popular. Like that crap TF Oud Wood . I actually like MFK Oud satin mood, yea there’s no Oud in there. But it smells very nice. He used synthetic Oud and since there is no law against it, there is nothing we can do. I have smelt nasty fecal cheap Oud, I hate it. I have smelt beautiful pleasant smelling Oud, it’s much more expensive. I have a few samples from Ensar, I do love his ouds, not all, but recently he’s gone insane with his extreme high prices. He’s become greedy. Areej also uses real Oud but he’s not a greedy slob like Ensar. Ensar is gonna lose his customer base. I don’t like Sultan Pasha’s work, everything I’ve smelt from him I didn’t like . I do love Bortnikoff. I own alot of his perfumes. While I don’t love all, I do love 90% of everything he puts out. Areej early work is amazing and masterpieces. Not a fan of his newest releases. ROJA is another greedy slob. His bottles cost more than the juice inside. His $4,000 perfumes are a joke. And stupid rich ppl(his customer base) will pay. I do think he makes some beautiful great quality Niche perfumes, but they’re extremely overpriced . EXTREMELY. Very EXTREMELY. And his Oud perfumes are the cheap fecal garbage Oud. So many ppl assume all Oud HAS to smell fecal and they expect it . No, Oud has many different smells, even sweet and chocolatey. But many ppl are so uneducated. They’re the ones who will spend a small fortune on Tom ford Oud wood just to show ppl they own a bottle . SMH 🤦‍♀️
