Taken from the album "Thalassic" (out July 10th, 2020 on Metal Blade Records)
Order at: www.metalblade...
The biggest difference separating 'Thalassic' from the rest of Ensiferum's catalogue comes from the fact that it's the first of their albums to be built around a theme. "The idea of it started to brew in my mind when I was doing interviews for 'Two Paths' and many journalists asked if it was a theme album, and I noticed that I was answering all the time that because of the way we compose it's almost impossible to make a theme album. This really started to piss me off and the decision was made: the next album would have a theme. At that time, we already had a few songs almost ready for the next album, and I started to listen to the demos much more from the feeling aspect instead of analyzing them musically. For some reason, all of them took me to a seashore, and the theme was found: something related to sea or water. So I started to read about history, myths and legend around the world that had something to do with the theme, but even though all of the lyrics are obviously inspired by this, I tried my best to keep Ensiferum's heroic mentality in them. In the end, there were too many ideas for lyrics, because I didn't set myself any boundaries - like all stories would have to be Nordic, etc, and one of my favourite songs on the album tells about Andromeda from Greek mythology. I can't promise that this way of lyric-writing will be the future of Ensiferum, but at least we did this once." - bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka
Lyrics:
What should one do when darkens the sky,
When in the horizon enemies’ sails arise?
What should one do when there is a need
To fool the approaching death, to do a hero's deed?
We rule the Seven Seas!
Swords high for our Queen!
Shout for what we live:
Rum, women, victory!
What should one do when the answer's not there
On the highest mountain, or the deepest sea bed?
What should one do if not fully alive?
Face looming death with a grin and the nectar of courage

@@Vahisofficial I wasn't talking about the sound, but the lyrics and it's not about bands of different countries singing about stuff from other countries. I was referring to the fact that Ensiferum usually have lyrics about battles and Finnish mythology. Therefore these lyrics came across relatively strange to me. However I admit that the whole album seems to revolve around the sea and pirates, so in this case the lyrics make sense.

@@metalbladerecords I think you're missing my point. I am not criticising the fact that Thalassic is a theme album, I am actually very fond of that idea! What I am criticising is the fact that the lyrics and title for this song in particular seem to be very plain, as if someone just said "Well, let's just write something very basic while including some keywords that seem to work for other folk metal bands". I'm not against songs about women or drinking (I really love both things), actually "One More Magic Potion" is one of my favourite Ensiferum songs! But that one makes sense as a whole. On the other hand, after commenting I took a look at the titles of the other songs in the album and they look very promissing! Can't wait to listen to Cold Northland! Please don't take my comments too personally. I really respect your work (Metal Blade and Ensiferum) and I'm sure you know how to write and produce an album 10000x better than I do. Just felt like sharing my opinion and I can't wait to listen to the full album (and hopefully attend a Thalassic tour concert). Stay safe and folk shit up!

it really looks like Ensiferum met Alestorm an entire weekend and recorded some of their jams. It feels a little strange because I miss something like "eternal wait" or like any song from Iron or Victory Songs. Anyway, it's a pretty good

Sry, not very good. I bet this is a fun song in a live situation, but from an artistic point of view it's not very convincing. It's the same kind of crap they have pumped out since Unsung Heroes

@@Agnes135 it depends a lot, bands like dragonforce , hammerfall . manowar , has bad lyrics , but Edguy , Angra , Helloween , Blind Guardian , Gamma Ray , Sonata Arctica , Stratovarius Etc has excellent lyrics , besides if you refering to the higher vibe it has or just not being dark as some think it should be , i disagree totally the most stupid shit in metal are those who think that everything should be about darkness and criticism , and think you cant express something by some other way, a band being a little brighter and sending their critics or messages maybe through a history , or maybe by an optmistic way , or a metaphoric way , doesnt make a lyric bad

@@umosay Strange you feel that way. From Afar used an array of orchestrations and One Man Army had a terrible mix and a completely different approach to the recording/ production process. This album marks a return of keyboards which we haven't really heard since Unsung Heroes and the return of the same producer and studio with which worked upon Victory Songs. Plus the fact it's essentially straight up Power Metal which was most evident upon Victory Songs.
