You can't talk about the true greats of folk-inspired melodic death metal without reverent mention of Ensiferum, and with Two Paths they once more affirm their place in the pantheons of the genre. Further building upon the thrilling metallic hybrid honed across six full-lengths, Two Paths is simultaneously the Finnish quintet's most epic and far-reaching collection and their most organic, which definitely sets it apart from the pack. "When we made 'One Man Army' (2015), we wanted it to sound more like a live album than a traditional studio album. With 'Two Paths', we took that to the next level with analog recording, cutting down tracks and even recording songs without a click, and because of that there is a totally different kind of groove compared to most modern metal albums," states bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka. While their ideas are huge and they consistently prove they have the talent to back them up, the band maintains the grounded MO that has served them so well over the years, with the results speaking for themselves. Ensiferum is a great folk band and their music is very entertaining.I became ensiferum fan only for a short while because suddenly I became infatuated with Jari Maenpaa and start to dig in all his songs former bands including with arthemesia or lost alone or even cadacross. You guys shold really check the Northwestern Eurasian thunder god. All the thunder gods in that vast region has the same root. It includes the Celtic Taranis, the Roman Jupiter, the Nordic Thor, the Finnish Perkele (also known as Piru), the Slavic Perun, the Baltic Perkunas and so on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_thunder_gods#Northwestern_Eurasia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perkwunos. Finnish "Ukko" is euphenism of Perkele the actual name of the god, instead of using the actual name, he is called "Ukko" (Old Man). This god was the sky-thunder-war-smithing-fertilty-luck etc god, head of the pantheon of much of the pagan northern Europe. Local traditions vary, but the origin is the same. In the iron age finds pendants of hammer and axe, "ukonvasara" or "ukonkirves" are common finds in Finland fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukon_kirves en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukonvasara, and the Stone Age Battle-Axes (of the Battle-Axe Culture) fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuorakeraaminen_kulttuuri made of stone were called ukonvaaja in Finland en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstone_(folklore), they were believed to be related to lightning strikes and were moored in buildings to protect them from lightning, "the lightning won't hit same place twice", is an old folk expression. The Battle-Axe culture probably worshipped also this thunder god, and since the battle-axes were a ritual item, this knowledge was transferred forward and the connection with the stone axes and lightning remained. There were several other gods that probably descend from same original mythology, typical are gods for water/sea and underworld for all these mythologies. As a god was often called with many names, it's hard to say for example is the Finnish smith god Ilmarinen actually another local name of Perkele, or did this god in mythology divide into two characters.

So typical Ensiferum, there was no question which band this was when the song started. It's not a bad thing, though. I highly enjoyed listening to this song, the back up vocals and riffs are awesome. The drum and bass lines are hearble, I like that. Also the song's quite melodic, which gives me eargasms really. Good song overall. I'd rate this 34.7/39.2 +1 like from me, this song is pretty great tbh.

Matthia Nygard is a serious and intellectual songwriter. Underneath simple lyrics are some very heavy thoughts. He experiments in different directions but his Folk oriented music has the best melodies. Ensiferum is more consistent Viking metal and maybe more complex in terms of music. both are great. Equilibrium from Germany is also great. more symphonic metal.
