I'd suggest The Big Boss (aka 'Fists of Fury' in USA) [1971] or The Way of the Dragon (aka 'Return of the Dragon') (1972) and also Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) A biography drama.

The yellow jumpsuit Uma Thurman wore in Kill Bill is more an homage to the one Bruce Lee wore in the movie “Game of Death”… It was partially made before he died… Still worth watching for the fighting scenes…

What's better is the documentary "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey" (2000) that has the complete, restored "Game of Death" footage as Bruce originally cut it. Watching the studio cut of the movie is painful, the doubles are so obviously not him and using the real life funeral footage was tacky, and the precious few minutes of Bruce's real footage is significantly cut down.

Kill Bill had so many references to old martial arts films that it would be hard to list them all. The yellow jumpsuit was obviously a nod to Bruce Lee, then there are numerous sound effects and music taken straight out of old Kung-Fu movie classics. The character of Pai Mei was taken out of old Shaw Bros. films and played by legendary martial arts actor Gordon Liu who originally played the hero who fought against Pei Mei. And Hattori Hanzo was played by Japanese Karate-film star, Sonny Chiba.

I'm surprised how Tarantino paid homage to Bruce Lee in Kill Bill but parodied him in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, making him into an arrogant bully who couldn't beat a Hollywood stuntman in a fight. It was Tarantino's worst film after Deathproof, after the way Bruce was portrayed in that film, Q.T went down in my estimation as a filmmaker. Saying that if Tarantino ever decides to direct a T.V series after his final film then I'd like to see him direct a Lone Wolf and Cub reboot produced by HBO, or even a Pai Mei origins story series; that would be 🔥🔥🔥

@@shaundavenport621 In the 80s I knew where you could buy them. If you got on a bus to Luton then next to bus terminal there's a row of little shops. Next door to the massage parlour with the painted out windows was, on the ground floor, a general purpose sex and bondage ship. On the 1st floor above it was a martial arts shop. OK, if you bought shurikens you'd have to grind the points on yourself but they did sell basic wooden nunchuks. I think the massage parlour is still there.

The music is done by Lalo Schifrin, the man who composed the Mission Impossible theme. He was a tremendous composer. He did the Dirty Harry soundtracks as well. And yes this movie was pretty much a standard for Martial Arts movies. It's a tragedy Bruce died so young. A sequel could have been a Hong Kong Version of James Bond.

_The Way of the Dragon_ (1972) is my favourite Bruce Lee film. He also directed it. It was the first Hong Kong film to be shot in Europe (specifically Rome, Italy), so once again Bruce was breaking new ground. The interior sequences were shot in a Golden Harvest sound-stage back in Hong Kong but exteriors were filmed on location in Rome.

Bruce Lee's widow said Way of the Dragon was Bruce's baby:he wrote the script,animated the title sequence,did the sequence with the cat,choreographed all the fight scenes,of course. LOL.Bruce also directed the film and played percussion on the sound-track. This film was only intended for the asian market.

According to the audio commentary on the Hong Kong Legends DVD release, Bruce had intended to do a version of this film that was better suited to the Western market. His death prevented that from happening unfortunately. In the Mandarin and Cantonese versions he also voiced the thug who asked for "Chinese spare-rib" when pretending to be a customer in the restaurant, according to what Frank Djeng said in *his* audio commentary for the 4K Ultra HD release from 2023.

I thought it was more than just a pilot. They must have broken up the movie into multiple parts when I watched it. In any event you could see some of the things Rodenberry was to carry over into TNG, such as the utilitarian uniforms and the communicator over the upper left chest.

That was what sold Lee on the movie, the whole spy angle. To the point where he was disappointed he didn't get to have a gun in the movie. I believe the line where his character asks and is denied was put in to placate him.

Fun Fact: A couple of camera's were shorted out due to Bruce's speed. There are quite a few shots that the flow was slowed down with how fast he was. The fight with Ohara, that side kick he delivered was one such slowed down scene and he actually connected with that kick which is why flew back so far. One of the men that fell over from being collided with the actor for Ohara actually broke his arm in the fall.

I wish people would stop saying this, because it's nonsense. Cameras of that era filmed at a different framerate than they were played back. The reason for this is because the slower framerate would cause janky movements and missing frames for any fast motion. You can see this in a lot of old movies any time a character is running, or riding on horseback, or driving a car, etc. The solution was to change the framerate when the movie was actually played back and it made the sequence look more smooth. Bruce Lee was not too fast for cameras to capture. What makes this claim even more ridiculous is that there is plenty of footage of Bruce Lee working out, training, doing demos or sparring with his students that was filmed with normal cameras, and we can see his movements just fine.

Enter the Dragon is a true classic. Sadly Bruce did not live to see it. The fight scenes were realistic and the story held your interest. The scene where Han and Bruce were in the hall of mirrors. The action and choreography are well balanced and it holds your interest. This Lunar New Year is the year of the Dragon!

I loved Bruce Lee growing up ... he inspired me to study martial arts as well. He truly is a legend. But my ALL time favorite martial arts movie stars Jet Li. It's called Fist of Legend (1994), which is a remake of Bruce Lee's Fist of fury (1972). TONS of really really good fight scenes and fight choreography in Fist of Legend. Fist of Legend was also a major inspiration for the fight scenes in The Matrix (1999). The two films share the same fight choreographer, Woo-Ping Yuen.

I have had the black special edition movie poster on my living room wall for the near decade that I've had my house. Uma Thurman's outfit in Kill Bill was inspired by Game of Death, which is the film Bruce was making when he died. There is some real footage used of him, but it's only the major fights in the end of the movie.

I read somewhere that originally, Roper was supposed to die and either Lee or Williams was supposed to fight Bolo, but then John Saxon's agent lobbied to get some changes made. Jim Kelly didn't seem to hold a grudge about it from what I can tell, and he got to parlay his role in this movie into making a few films of his own, to exploit the black cinema/martial arts crossover audience.

Good one, Jen! Yeah, for a martial arts film, it doesn't get any better than this one. There's a really enjoyable bio type movie called Dragon: The Bruce Lee story that I think you would enjoy. It might answer some of your questions. Bruce's son Brandon also made some fun movies. The Crow is I think my favorite of his. There's a tragic story there as well, but save your research until after you've enjoyed the movie, 😉 Thanks for sharing this one!

Sammo Hung is his sparring partner in the first scene. Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah ("Landlord" from *Kung Fu Hustle)* doubled for Bruce. (He never fully recovered from his back injury and couldn't do those flips)

​@@chrisleebowers Bruce could never do flips, he had no gymnastic background. Yuen Wah was Bruce's double in this and Fist of Fury, and got a cameo appearance in each of those films as a reward. Yuen Biao didn't double for Bruce until the 1978 version of Game of Death, as he was only 15/16 years old when Enter The Dragon was being made. He can be seen twice though as one of Han's generic "Karate fighters". The guards that get killed by Bolo include Mars (from Jackie Chan's stunt team) and Chong Fat (who worked as a bad guy for pretty much everyone in the 80s). Lam Chin Ying, who was Bruce's fight assistant, doubled for Mr Han, and is also the guard that gets kicked through the doors by Williams. He can also be seen at the front of the Karate fighters when they're training, telling them when to punch.

Saw this movie in the theater when it first came out. Blew my mind. So many young dudes left the theater throwing kicks and punches and yelling, Wah Wah! Wadah! The beginning of many martial arts movies. Other earlier movies were Fists of Fury, The Way of the Dragon where he fights Chuck Norris in the finale. He also played Karate crime fighter and side-kick Kato in the 60's TV show, The Green Hornet. His introduction to becoming a superstar. He is rightfully dubbed 00Lee by you. He's so compelling, you just can't take your eyes off him. It's worth reading up on his biography, how he split time between Asia and the USA, how he developed his own unique martial arts style ("Jeet Kune Do"), trained famous actors, and worked his way up the Hollywood ladder, against all odds. You are so correct to say he was ahead of his time.

That's....a common trope among the Bruce Lee cult, but it's missing some context. Film cameras of the day were played at a different framerate than they were filmed. So, very often, fast movements in front of the camera would look very janky. If you go back and watch some older movies than this, you'll see it when you get scenes of people running, or horse cases or car chases and things. So by this era, they had taken to slowing certain sections of the footage, to reduce the loss of frames when the film's played. The Bruce Lee cult have framed this as "Bruce Lee was too fast to see!" but it's not true. It was true of ANY fast motion in front of a movie camera of the era. The suggestion is even sillier because there's a wealth of footage of Bruce Lee working out filmed with normal characters, and we can see his motion just fine without it being slowed down.

It seems that in some cases the camera was sped up to 35 frames per sec to capture the movement better to make the fight choreography more pleasing to watch. I suppose he was not too fast for the camera to capture. Perhaps the more accurate statement is that he slow down a little to make the hit more plausible on film. I don't know I'm old, everything seems fast for me.

@@warpspeedracer Almost everything you have ever read about Bruce Lee is made up. Bruce Lee has been promoted into some kind of fighting god by his cult like followers. In reality, Bruce Lee was a martial arts hobbyist and actor. He was not a fighter. And any pro fighter of any weight class would fold him up like lawn furniture. There is not a single more exaggerated or lionized individual in modern history. And don't get me wrong, I like Bruce Lee and his films. I just get a real headache from the absurdly exaggerated stories of his exploits. The only real fight the man ever had was against a waiter. And he performed so poorly that it's the fight where he realized traditional Chinese martial arts had conned him.

I was a school kid when this movie came out, there were already a bunch of dubbed martial arts movies from the 60's-70's which had a huge fan base in the west, a local cinema had a new one every week for the Saturday afternoon showing, this one with Bruce lee started the 'Kung Fu' craze around the world.

“Man, you come straight out of a comic book” is my favorite line. A number of the actors in this were actually competitive martial artists, Jim Kelly was one who won multiple championships in world competitions. Bruce Lee was known to be a philosopher. He died before this movie was finished and released. Another good Bruce Lee movie is Game of Death which features NBA great Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who trained in martial arts under Lee while he was still in college.

One of the very best martial arts movie of all time. I agree, this has a very James Bond vibe. A very young Jackie Chan was a member of Hans army and famously got hit for real by Bruce during the underground fight scene. Bolo played a bad guy in alot of Martial arts movies, I recommend 'Double Impact' with Jean Claude Van Damme. His son, Brandon also died very young during the filming of 'The Crow' which I think you would also enjoy

Studied JKD Concepts and Filipino Martial arts for years, went to Dog Brothers Gatherings so... Man is this film near and dear to my heart. A bittersweet reminder of the enjoyment we could have received from any future Lee films he never got to make, or that he didn't get to experience the success he had worked hard to achieve. Still, this one holds up where many of the even "classic" Shaw Bros. and othe Hong Kong productions fall short in retrospect. While a journeyman type the director did manage to fully capture Lee's charisma and skill as well as create fun supporting characters all while unknowingly laying the groundwork for so many pop culture tropes and future franchises like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter etc. Is this "The Godfather"? No. But it's a watershed monent in action adventure movies which will change fight choreography forever in both Western and Eastern cinema. To follow up Ms. Murray I would say for sure go more or less chronologically with the big names as they came out: Jacki Chan Sammo Hung Michelle Yeoh Chuck Norris Jean-Claude Van Damme Jet Lee Post the CGI revolution it changed from individual stats to stunt teams so nimbers get thinner. The team behind the AMAZING fights in Ong-Bak and The Protector come to mind, and of course The Raid, itself drawing from Lee's final unfinished film Game Of Death. So... It's all a tapestry. Jen, the score for Lee’s last film, Game Of Death, was done by *John Barry* who scored most of the James Bond films until 1987. Sadly, the movie itself was built around the fifteen minutes of fight footage Bruce shot before he died, and not the story he originally envisioned.

Your spot on about the music. The composer is Lalo Schifrin, who wrote the original Mission Impossible theme. He did many films and TV shows from that time. Mannix, Cool Hand Luke, Bullet, Dirty Harry, The Cincinnati Kid just to name a few. He started getting around when Dizzy Gillespie had him as his pianist. Lalo has made many Jazz albums too. I have them all on vinyl, and he remains one of my favorite movie score composers. I would say the first Dirty Harry soundtrack was him at his most creative and funky-est. I would watch this classic movie for the music alone, but it's also one of the greatest movies of that time as well.

0:34 "That little move he did" is called a kip up. The first time I saw it was in fight scenes from the old 1940s/1950s action adventure serials. I spent a lot of time mastering it. Never, ever used it in a fight, but it made me look cool getting back to my feet after practicing newaza (ground grappling) in judo.

Anytime we see Bruce Lee fight on screen is a treat for the eyes. Even if most of his movies have him horribly overdubbed in English, specifically when his characters are speaking. I think this is the only movie I've seen of his where he used his actual voice. Rest in peace to an absolute, undeniable legend.

Many people might not know this but the voice of the man that played Han ( Shih Kien ) was dubbed by fellow actor Keye luke at the time. Keye Luke is famous for his role as the blind man from the 70's hit show "Kung Fu" staring David Carradine.

Great review as usual! The most important thing to remember when viewing this one film especially was that most people had never seen anything like it. People were blown away. Since then there have been a million "Kung Fu Movies." But this was the first for many It was my first as a kid in the 80s. "Game Of Death" will help you understand the Kill Bill suit. Hey Jen, I am a gen x American who grew up studying ,martial arts throughout most of my teen years and into my 20s. I was very fortunate to have met some well known martial artists growing up and learn quite a few things. I can give you some insight into this film. Bruce was already a star in China, and Bruce was known to the American audience from his portrayal of the Green Hornet's sidekick, Kato on that tv show during the 60s. This was the film that really made Bruce an international film star. The first fighter Bruce faces off against in front of the monks in the beginning is Sammo Hung, another well known martial artist who had a tv show here in the states called 'Martial Law' for a few seasons. There were MANY issues that were overcome to make this movie, so much so, that it was a major accomplishment to get it finished. The biggest was the language barrier. When they first arrive at Han's island and all those fighters are practicing, they were from many different regions of China and spoke with different dialects. They were also from many different Triad gangs, so they was always tension between them on the set. As I mentioned before, Bruce was already a star in China, and some of Asia, as he was a child star growing up and had a couple of movies that were hits in the Asian market prior to this. Because of Bruce's reputation as a martial artist and being a star in China, he was challenged to fight quite a bit on set. Eventually, after being harassed by a kid sitting on a wall on the set, he accepted the challenge. He beats the sh@t out of this kid, and after that, was challenged a lot less when the extras understood that he was a real martial artist and not just an on screen persona. During the fight with Ohara, Han's number one man, when Bob Wall (the martial artist/actor who portrayed him), picks up the 2 bottles and smashes them together....those were actual glass bottles as they didn't have safety glass for this scene. Bruce actually suffered severe cuts from this that required stitches and shooting was delayed a couple of weeks for him to recover. This incident cause a major rift between the Asian on set and the rest of the crew because they thought that this accident was caused 'on purpose'. Initially Bruce was so nervous about making this movie that they didn't even start filming the principle scenes for a few weeks. The monk that Bruce talks to in the beginning, that Chinese actor was also a pilot with his own plane, and the shots of Han's island from the air were taking with him flying his plane while Bruce was suffering from this extreme nervousness. The first scene that was actually filmed with Bruce was the one when he is sitting in the chair in his room and her turns as he is being presented with the gift of women. Once he got past that, he was ok. The really big buff Chinese guy that Han has kill his deficient guards is Bolo Yeung. This was his first move and it started his career. He has been in many things since then. You should definitely check out Bruce's other movies....I would say check out Way of the Dragon next as it was the one before this movie and there is a pretty epic fight with Chuck Norris in it. He other movies are The Big Boss, The Chinese Connection, and Game of Death (which he was only about to film the fight scene for, and it was completed with another actor, then released after Bruce's death). Although, before your next Bruce Lee movie, I would suggest a Jackie Chan movie. As I was training seriously in martial arts, I didn't get into Jackie Chan until later on, in the 90s, as I was really introduced from a friend of mine.That is when I understood how good Jackie is. I would suggest Rumble In the Bronx as your next martial arts movie as it is generally lighter and more fun. It also has spectacular fighting and stunts in it. There are several scenes in which Jackie could have easily died while making this movie. Once, in which he jumps from a parking deck onto the fire escape with out any safety wires. During the outtakes at the end, the cast runs to the edge to see if he made it across, which he does. During filming, Jackie actually broke his ankle during a jump (which they show during the outtakes at the end( and he is back on set 2 days later with a cast,, and they painted sock on the end to look like the tennis shoes he is wearing. This move has several comedic scenes and is generally a lot of fun. I strongly suggest this as your next martial arts movie. Just be sure to stick around for the end credits until they are done. There are plenty of outtake scene at the end. Cheers, Tim

For further Asian badassery... Chow Yun-fat was China's #1 action star in the 90s, he was huge, kinda like China's answer to James Bond / Bruce Willis. Two of his films you should check out are 'The Killer' (1990) - he plays an elite assassin. And also 'Hard Boiled' (1992) - he plays a supercop, John McClane style. The action and gunplay is absolutely insane. Both of these action masterpieces are directed by John Woo.

Near me, when growing up, there was a movie theater that showed martial arts movies on Friday nights. We had the chance to see many films just a few years beyond when they were first released in Japan and China. Many movies had no subtitles, but that was no problem. We understood the plot points, anyway.
