I've always had a huge fascination for American Football helmets, especially after I played Quake! It's very clear how much influence these designs had on the protagonist's helmet, and even more so in the series' latest game (which has a full, optional football outfit for the protagonist), and I really like how they look without the face bars. Very good video overall, anyways! Time to binge watch the whole channel.

The "leather hats" were primarily designed to (1) protect ears from getting mangled, and (2) protect against abrasions. They offered only marginal protection against hard blows to the head, but the only choices players had in those days were either the leather helmet or no helmet. Given the choice, wouldn't you take the leather?

The increase in concussions is the evolution of man. Athletes are bigger stronger and faster of that in the 1920s. It's palpable that new helmets won't prevent a 275 pound athlete running at 20 mph from giving you a concussion.
@SteezySteez2011
@SteezySteez2011 5 жыл бұрын
Additionally, the helmets and shoulder pads allow you to hit another player with little regard for your head. There’s pretty much no way to prevent it. It’s like putting your body through a car accident, every game.

It doesn't matter how much you engineer the helmet. The brain is a gelatinous material that wants to stay in motion when your head is stopped suddenly. Which means that it is being squished up against the inside the skull every time the player's motion is being suddenly arrested. This is what causes CTE and no matter how well you make the helmet you cannot change the way the brain moves around inside the skull.

The problem is they’ve made the helmets nearly perfect for protecting the outside of the head. Concussions happen on the inside of your head and it’s hard to figure out a way to stop an impact on the inside of the head externally
@MeMe-kk1xt

That is what Vicis is doing with their shock absorption. instead of stopping the head instantly and forcing the brain to bounce around. it slows it down to a stop so it dosent bounce around causing a concussion
@bentice5911

To me the argument that football helmets increase the risk of nfl players ignores the economic incentives of playing the game. The basic argument is helmets make players feel safer so they launch into their opponents with reckless abandon and if they didn't wear helmets they would be more careful. This totally ignores the economic incentives present in the nfl. Imagine you are a 195 lb cornerback. Imagine you have marginal skills (by nfl standards). You don't have a guaranteed contract, but are making 2 million per year. You didn't finish college and have no other method of making anywhere close to this amount. You told your mother to quit her job as a maid and bought your mom her first house. You are still making mortgage payments on it and your own house. You are funding your younger siblings through school and have financed the business venture of a beloved uncle. You need to stay in the league for a few more years to lift all of your extended family out of generations of poverty. A 230 lb running back has broken out into the open field towards you. You have no chance of form tackling this man. If you don't stop him you will give up a touchdown lose this game and probably ensure your team loses its division. The only chance you have is to dive at the RBs legs. You do so because you fear being cut from the team for not being able to tackle. You dive and his knee goes into your skull. If you have a helmet the damage is much less. If you don't wear a helmet you still need to make this tackle for your livelihood.

When my dad played at East LAJr college he split an opponent's helmet w/ a forearm smash. ( mid 50's) Before the ambulance left the field, he did it again. They had to call the meat wagon back for patient #2. He went on to play at UCLA later. helmets back then had a bakelite top shell and leather ear to ear.. similar to a tankers helmet. His victims may have had the early plastic shell. And no face masks. We were at East LA Jr college field for a high school game when he told me the tale🏈

Good video. Helmets definitely need to evolve some more before football dies. As much as I love the game, the players are literally slow-killing themselves on the field.

Agreed. I think improved helmets and adjusting the rules for safety will help. But it's a mess right now as they stumble to fix it.

Worth noting, US WWII tanker helmets were made by Rawlings and were heavilly based on their current model helmet (with bigger holes on top and headphones built into the ear pieces).

I hardly ever took a hit to the head during a game. It was mostly lower body tackles and get my head to the ball. but in practice, 90 percent of the hits was head to head.

The vicis sounds the safest to buy but it is not if u take a vicis and push the 2 ear holes to the inside of the helmet they touch which if your wear a vicis and get hit in the ear hole or lowers it will break your jaw I recommend a xenth I have had a xenth for three years now and I love it

The more and more the helmets are improved the more they are being used as a weapon for helmet to helmet collusion making the value of a helmet very low. If they had no true helmet and only a leather head, would they go helmet to helmet? No way Concussions problem solved 😂

Wouldn't the best way to prevent concussions be to remove helmets altogether? It sounds counterintuitive, but nobody is going to lead with their head when they aren't wearing a helmet. They're going to protect themselves. Perhaps there's a study comparing rugby concussions to NFL football. I'll have to look into it.
@EntertainTheElk

Yeah that's the debate. If people feel invincible then they'll throw their bodies around without thinking.

Football has already gone too far in the direction of helmet contact. It's basically the tradition now and to take it out completely would possibly destroy the sport.

Rugby has issues with concussions although the governing organizations have been addressing it. Biggest problem is with the culture of being manly and walking off injuries leading to underreporting and playing through concussions. iirc in the US, concussions for high school rugby are higher than for football with soccer having the highest rate of concussion.

racewiththefalcons1 the game would be completely different then. Essential rugby. The whole point of American football is full speed hits. Without helmets it would be like rugby which is more like wrestling someone down than full blown tackling them. It just wouldn’t work.

Grew up my whole life playing on classic hard padding schutt and Ruddel Helmets My senior year I was given a xenith speed. I soon realized the amount of minor concussion I was recieving every year like clock work. I honestly wish I never played. I have clear memories of my brain just not feeling right during season. Like a constant fog. Study for a test all week. Play on Friday and get the test Monday and not even knowing wtf it’s about
