At one place I worked, we would always have 2 hour meetings every Tuesday, and I assure you all that ever got accomplished was the whole department lost 2 hours of production a week. Speak nothing of the fact the boss was a Karen who would berate everyone during that time. Then, we got a new supervisor. We attended the first meeting with him instead of Karen, and he pretty much was just asking "so, what do you usually do?" After he was up to speed, he essentially said "whoa, sounds awful, let's vote: who wants to stop these meetings?" We had to pick our jaws off the floor, because our input had never been asked before. Next week he came back and was like "new meeting policy: I'll text you whatever I need you to know, if ever. 2: meeting time will be replaced with staff lunch, all paid for. Boss will always attend, and we can use it as a time to catch each other up and vent to boss. 3: this was 100% optional, you're adults, I trust you, do what you need. The whole department agreed that day we would follow this man to the depths of Hell, he was the best boss I've ever had. Whole department always attended the lunches just to catch up, eat, have fun, and express ourselves. People don't quit jobs, they quit management, and this was a case of the polar opposite. Kudos to bro boss.

in person meeting are almost never to get things done and regulated, but almost always to set and consolodate the pecking order. The one that comes in late , talks most, interrupt others and is seldom interrupted is the top dog, while the one that can barely utter two words before interrupted are lowest at the food chain. It is about the same as an alfa male chimp beating the bushes and harrassing other. But like the alfa male chimp the alfa male human needs allies to stay on top. With no allies the fall is a matter of time and it is nasty. This entited boss wasted a day beating the bushes.

At one time, my dad was fired from his job for not showing up to work for one day. What makes this OUTRAGEOUS is that he NEEDED to not attend work because he was helping a HANDICAPPED person that had been coming to school and were crashed into by a DRUNK DRUVER. That boss is SICK. I haven't heard from my dad about his job since he got fired. One more thing. *THAT BOSS IS SICK. HE FIRED MY DAD BECAUSE HE MISSED A DAY. WHAT MY DAD HAD TO WAS HELP A MINOR AFTER HAVING DAMAGE TO HIS BRAIN AND OTHER THINGS.*

story 3: Used to work at a certain fast food restaurant known for a clown (yellow, being the primary color of this clown). they were so anti-union, that even saying the word would get you written up. a coworker of mine was LGBT was written up for his use of the word when he told the shift supervisor he needed a day off to go to the courthouse for his civil union. Manager heard this and wrote him up. supervisor and coworker both tried to explain that he wasn't referring to a union, but rather, a gay marriage in politically correct terms. Manager threatened another write up for insubordination because they talked back.

Story 1: No. He knew what he was doing. In fact, he got let off easy. Not only did he mandate a meeting too early for his employees to prepare for(ergo needing a month in advance), but it was all just for him to throw his own entitlement in their faces as opposed to getting to know anybody like he said. That's over-imposing your authority, not to mention lying about it and that energy does NOT need to be in that kind of work. Steve shouldn't have even HAD the chance to quit after paying them back. He should've been straight up TERMINATED.

Story 1: It's almost always bosses that think they are going to "change" things that don't need to be changed. This Steve was nothing short of an idiot. Im surprised he didn't have to deal with any grief from his managers (maybe he did, i dont know) over that in-person meeting. Good thing the OP and the rest of the crew got paid and then some for that... i know i wouldn't want to be in a long self-promoting meeting like that. Story 2: Friendships can change and fade over time, its a fact of life, but i dont think Jane really has the OP's best interests in mind here, only her own. I would attend, but i wouldnt give gifts or anything and would consider leaving early if things don't improve. Story 3: Instead doing all this malicious compliance, i would've just gone to the union and gotten all that cleared up and fixed, rather then wasting hours commuting. I dont know where the OP is, but the union could easily turn on the OP and say "Hey! You're wasting all these man-hours going to and from the office, here's your pink slip." I dont think the OP is a jerk here, but i think they should've just pressed the union non-stop until things changed, because honestly, this could've very easily backfired on the OP. Story 4: The cousin here is blatanly lying through her teeth, and i think it should be obvious. She wasnt getting her way, so we went straight for the insults to the OP, and when that didnt get the reaction she wanted, then she took it up a notch, and in the worst possible way too, trash talking someone who can't defend themselves. From all the things said here about the cousin, i wouldn't believe her if her tongue was notarized. I would cut this cousin out of your life, and ths is the perfect reason to do so.
