I actually immediately cried at the first story. I had a PICC line in my arm from my chemo treatments. My boyfriend at the time was humiliated when we were at a Phillies game and my line fell out of my sleeve roll. I had to quickly repair it. And cover it up. He said that I cheered too hard on purpose and that was why it popped out. He said I wanted attention. So sorry that MY cancer embarrassed HIM!!

I feel like that ring was probably his grandmothers ring or something sentimental to keep in the family, its beautiful. I truly hope he found someone wonderful that would fall in love with a vintage wonder like it. My grandmother actual had a ring similar which may be why I am partial to the ring In the photo, but it was symbolic for her two children and he husband at the time, or for three events, I cannot remember but I loved hearing the story when I was little.

That ring is beautiful. My husband proposed with a plain "gold" band that he paid twenty bucks for. He put it in a chicken Pez dispenser; when I opened it for candy, the ring popped out. I said yes and we've been happily married for 26 years. We replaced the fake gold band with real gold ones (I think they were $400 each) and I keep the engagement ring in the Pez dispenser in my 'box of things from Husmo'. I had no idea that ring-shaming was a thing. How sad for them.

As a parent who did the Parent part of the Distance Learning for her kindergartner for the whole year (as a kindergartener I had to be with her the whole time as she barely knew how to use a computer and couldn't read any directions and needed to be supervised of course) while working full time from home for a creative advertising agency- I can tell you that teachers ABSOLUTELY deserved a bonus this year. Not only are they still teaching, but most went above and beyond and extended their hours. I HATE when I hear people saying that teachers weren't actually teaching this year. They have done more than ever this year. And I would never call myself my daughter's teacher, I did refer to myself as the teacher's assistant though (it was a lot of work, honestly). I wouldn't even refer to myself as a homeschool teacher as home schooling is realistically a whole different ball game. Do we "parent assistant teachers" deserve a bonus as well? Oh man, that would be nice. But parents do a lot of hard work ALL of the time without actual payment. I'm just glad that whole mess is over. I treated myself to a nice long massage at the end of the school year.

Hmm... to be fair... I was with someone who had HORRIBLE taste in jewelry, like, really really bad. As kindly as possible, I asked him to stop buying me jewelry. When it came time to purchase an engagement ring I asked if I could pick out something that was within budget. He was totally fine with that. It meant that he didn't have to do the running around, and I'd get something I actually liked.

Seems crappy to just expect a certain amount be paid AND say so. Statistics show the more you spend on the engagement ring the shorter the marriage is. I picked out my engagement rings. I feel no one is going to know my taste better than me. Also didn't spend a gazillion. Admittedly, was going to get a beautiful 20-yr anniversary ring but at 19 yrs and 7 months with late husband the universe suddenly decided I should be miserable for a decade. 😐

In the military, especially at hospitals, we get the dependakarens who like to pretend their husband's rank also applies to them. I'm a Navy Corpsman. Best one I saw was when a Captain and his wife walked in for her to get emergency treatment at a dental clinic. We already had a busy sick call, and, her issue was minor enough she could wait. Captain was very thankful and polite. She demanded to jump the line. He looked her dead in eyes and said, "My rank is not your entitlement. Shut up and wait patiently like normal people". She was quiet after that.

The ring is ugly . Like how dare someone have FEELINGS and an opinion about a ring they are stuck with for life 😒🙄 thank god my guy suggested we go ring shopping.. the ones he liked look bad on me and the vintage one I picked .. he fell in love with when he saw it on my hand.. we ultimately went with the one I picked and he realized that I wouldn’t have liked any of the ones he picked bc they actually looked terrible on my hand (I have small dainty hands.. I’m also a bargain hunter so I would have been mad if he spent thousands on a tiny rock ) found one for under 500 and it’s a sparkler ) I get the principle of what you are saying but some guys are really not good at ring shopping. She has to wear it .. it should be discussed what her style is . Waiting on my ring to be sized and I’m currently wearing a plain gold band.. no the ring doesn’t really matter but it would still suck to have to wear something you don’t like .. for life.

I am a teacher and I can say I have never worked harder. It makes me sad that people believe teachers are lazy or doing less. I spend about four hours each weekend to make slides that are interactive and engaging for my students. I prep bags after I zoom with my student, plan, email parents, and attend many after school meetings. Those bags are things I purchase and prep. We have three experiments worth of materials for the next three weeks. Now my focus is one teaching everyday and now prepping my classroom for in- person instruction. Teacher are asked to come during our spring break to measure, move furniture, and make individual supplies for each student. Then I need to watch videos on how to use the technology provided. I love my students and families that’s why I do this. But it is not kind to think that teachers are not stressed and trying their absolute best to make this year memorable for their students.

Teachers have been putting in as much or more effort to do virtual learning than they have to do in person. The parent is not expected to teach their child. They're expected to make sure that their kids shows up for the online classes and encourage the kid to do their work, but the teacher is still teaching. Smh

I see her point and it’s valid however the online homeschooling doesn’t run for regular school hours. It is extremely limited w at least one of those days no zoom. Leaving the teaching and lessens to the parents. I am a parent who is very present and help my daughter as much as I can. But the truth is I don’t have the tactics and teacher mentality. Teachers are truly skilled and under appreciated. And as much as I’m a great mom, I’m not a great teacher. Also with the kids not in regular school hours I still have to work a full job and work with my child being home (either w a sitter or family) so after I work a full day I still have to try to help her through the school stuff she would’ve normally learned all day at school. Just wanted to give another perspective because they are equally valid. Also tell your sister thank you for what she does! Teacher are awesome

These people make my blood boil...Those women finding engagement rings and posting pics while saying horrible things...it's truly disgusting behavior. To those women: The fact that someone wants to marry someone as selfish and self absorbed as u is a miracle. U should be grateful just for that. My ex made me an engagement ring out of a guitar string and I LOVED it. I prefer that over some store bought diamond any day. It means so much more. He even bought me a diamond later, but I still wore the one he made. If ur relationship is about money in any capacity, u should feel ashamed of urself.

While I agree that the online shaming of those rings etc is horrible and it should not be about the money, it does not sit well with me how often I read here, that that woman should be grateful that he wants to marry her in the first place and not complain about the ring. I puts the woman into the position of the supplicant, painting the guy as the one to do her a HUGE favor. I think thats wrong and very, very old-fashioned. Beeing proposed to is a reason to be happy (or well...not :D). Not grateful. I mean he gets to be engaged to the woman he loves, but i hear no one saying, he is supposed to be grateful if she says yes.

I will never understand people's obsession over engagement rings. In Germany you traditionally pick out your wedding bands together and both partners will first wear the ring on the left side when they are engaged and switch to the right hand once they are married. I find it so gross that it is always about money and spending a lot on a ring in the US. This is not what love should be about.

A lot of the mentality today was created by marketing companies. The people in the diamond industry wanted to make more money so they started pushing the thought of diamonds being the ultimate stone for engagement. Then hey started shaming men for trying to spend anything less than three months pay on a ring. It’s all toxic and honestly was just started by greedy capitalists wanting to make even more money.

It's actually very similar in Brazil, but with switched hands! You start off engaged with the gold bands on yout right ring finger, then switch to the left when married. In my case, though, we decided to just start directly with the bands on the left hand when we got married, no ring before. I actually had this embarrassing moment with a friend (embarrassing for her, I was fine with it LOL) when I first told people about the engagement. My friend (born in America) immediately asked to see my hand, and I just responded with a confused face... until I understood, she understood, she got all red in the face, and we had a laugh.

@@DS-qw1tp I don’t recommend cubic, not because it isn’t pretty, but because it can’t take heat. You won’t be able to repair the ring if anything happens to the metal because the cubic will crack as soon as you heat it. White sapphire, white topaz, or moissanite are all great diamond alternatives that are still cheap but will allow for any future repairs!

Hey, public school teacher here. We did three times the work at a distance, at least, than we would in a live classroom environment. Plus, we get paid very little normally commiserate to our education, were expected to buy our own stuff to teach kids from home with no help from districts, and are often treated as 'the help'. So $1000 wouldn't even cover what I put out to teach from home for the last year. Oh, and we can only claim $250 on our taxes for classroom materials and most of us spend upwards of $2000 per year on our students/classroom materials. So yeah, dude is entitled.

It's about the idea that tax dollars raised in Area A should be spent in Area A instead of a big money pit that gets divided up by someone, somewhere, somehow. Asking where your money goes is not dangerous. Having as say in where your money goes is not dangerous. Dismantling various government 'institutions' is probably not such a bad idea. Ultimately it's an argument for a smaller, localised government instead of a state or federal one particularly when it comes to local spending. And perhaps it would result in less money going overseas funding gender studies programs in Pakistan or speed boats in Sri Lanka. Or more recently 70 billions dollars going to Ukraine.

6:50 - my perspective as an elementary school teacher: I was in school every day, likely every of my collegues were. AND they called every student twice a week after being in school for emergency care. On the day homeschooling were announced everyone printed everything for every student. After 3 months, the homework was sent by email with the note "If you are not able to print it, you can inform us and we will print it for you, so you can come and get it. And they asked the teacher to bring it to them.. bc ... bad service? I don't know. Also.. that's our school. I know there are others doing only the minimum.

I get that my son's school didn't support the distance learning teachers very well, but my son's teacher waited until my son was hopelessly "behind" to tell me he wasn't doing his work. My son swears that a lot of it was submitted and it just never came up as submitted or graded. I saw him do work. There is some that he didn't do, but there is no way that he didn't do anything. She also claimed he wasn't logging in to the meetings, but I saw him with his iPad and heard her voice. And, when he was tested he knew everything he needs to know to move forward. If he didn't do any work or go to class, how did he learn a year's worth of stuff? He's smart but he's not a Borg drone. He can't just access information from the hive mind. Now he has to do Summer school, but not regular Summer school, because he doesn't need to actually learn anything. He just has to do work, and from the way his teacher was talking, a large amount that seems more like punishment than anything. She and his other teacher also pretty much came out and said they thought he was stupid until he took the tests. What's stupid is not telling me there was a problem until everything had gone to hell.

Those parents made that choice for whatever reason so, no they don't deserve a bonus for doing what they chose to do. Traditional teachers were not trained in online schooling and have made huge changes to help students. They deserve the kudos. @koalaeucalyptus
@koalaeucalyptus 3 жыл бұрын
@@Outnumberedbykidsandcats I'm happy to see parents seeking information! And the answer is: exactly because of the virtual environment. In person lessons and virtual lessons require different materials and mediums, and the burden of adapting everything for both fell onto us, teachers. Also, managing hybrid classes is like managing two different classrooms simultaneously - the level of attention and multitasking required is enough to stress anyone. Of course, after some time, most adaptations are done, but good teachers are always updating materials, which now takes double the effort due to the different mediums. Getting students online to pay attention and assessing their level of understanding is also a bigger challenge, as is keeping them interested. Also, correcting assignments and such takes much longer in virtual mediums. The blurred lines (which were already not very defined to begin with) between personal and work time when working from home also play a role. All of this adds up really quickly.

I work for a public high school, not as a teacher but as a tutor/teacher's assistant and can confirm that work has been MUCH more stressful during the pandemic - both for the teachers that still cared a lot about their students' education and for the teachers that felt otherwise. Even as a tutor I felt I was being underpaid and doing a lot more work that I was being paid for because of the extra stuff we had to do and how much more EFFORT we had to put in to MAKE SURE that the students are actually understanding what they learn. We got paid for only 15 hours a week but were expected to always be available for the students. The biggest issue that I can recognize is students not taking advantage of free resources that get offered. Many schools have tried to compensate for what we know is lower education quality by giving free tutoring every day after school or having workshops. One teacher I know is always calling her 12th graders by the phone to remind them to turn something in every other night because she was afraid that they would not graduate if she didn't try to hold them MUCH more accountable by holding these 17-18 yr old's virtually by the hand. However, I do know some teachers who have completely given up, which makes me very sad. So yeah, I kind of felt like that post was entitled (at least for the high school setting), though I can see the situations where parents may feel that way..

The parent still has to follow the curriculum and learn how to teach all subjects not just one or two at a time and learn how to teach the same subjects as they advance through the years as well. Pay for all the books, supplies, lunches, papers, desks, make tests and more. Their children still have to take the same end of the year tests as all the other children in the state do. I’m impressed that you were able to homeschool your children a little while ago, but homeschooling your child is very different from teaching 25 kids and having to deal with all different kinds of learning techniques (and catering to all of them) as well as dealing with 25 sets of different parents-some together some not, so add in custody issues to that number- being a teacher is very different from being a nurse. I couldn’t do your job. Thank you for all you do and have had to do during this pandemic.

Public school high school teacher here and I can tell you that we worked HARDER this year than any other year. My district started off online, and I had to prep for two different classes, 5 classes total, every day. I had to record grades and load ALL of my materials into the online platform so that those students who were out (whether quarantined or doing the Online Learning Program) could access and follow along with the material. I would spend hours creating my own curriculum materials, videos, assessments, etc, and making sure they were useable for each student. It was exhausting. Even when we were in person, I still had to load all of my materials into the online platform. Luckily, I'm ver tech savvy, but many of my colleagues were/are not. So, in response for your comment about the parent complaining about teacher pay increases, I would greatly disagree. Yes, parents worked hard to help their children through school, but the teachers were NOT being lazy or working less (at least not the teachers I work with).

My favorite of all my great-grandmother's sayings (I was lucky enough to grow up knowing her): Un beso sin bigote es como un huevo sin sal (a kiss without a mustache is like an egg without salt). She also used to say that I wouldn't get married until I could make the perfect tortilla. Well, apparently one night, twenty-five years ago, I did. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing, so my husband used a bread-tie! I still have it in my jewelry box. =)

My sister is a teacher and this pandemic has been really hard for her. She's had to take on a lot of extra work. Along with the usual marking/planning and zoom lessons, she is expected to make calls everyday to check on students mental health and welfare. In the UK, final grades are being given by teachers which means they are having to do tests in school which are marked by the teachers instead of the exam board, it's a lot of extra marking. Also, it's not really teaching, more like supervising if they're actual teacher has provided all the resources, as well as holding zoom classes. I think a lot of people forget that many teachers are parents themselves and are having to 'teach' their own children, so just like the rest of the country, they're having to balance working at home and childcare.

According to my teacher friends, the teachers do work harder during the pandemic because besides teaching class online, they also are basically on call 24/7 because the parents and student call their personal cellphone whenever they have questions/problems, as the school does not provide another phone or phone line.

Thoughts on the teaching/homeschool comment: I had to teach virtually and it was so much harder than the years I taught in person! It is true that the hours face to face with the students was less, but that was because the little first graders couldn’t handle sitting in a chair glued to a screen for all that time. It was torture enough the time they did do it; any more and they would have been just burning out, not learning. If they were in the classroom, they would be up and down, running around the room, learning actively through games, crafts, etc. We can’t facilitate any of that through a screen, especially when we don’t know what sorts of supplies they have at home. We did our best to maximize the time we could command their attention on screen. The remaining school hours (and beyond) that we weren’t on with the children, we were overhauling the curriculum, trying to create activities that allowed the students to learn off screen, with as much movement, engagement, and immediate feedback as possible, with as little input from parents as possible. We knew that, in many cases, those assignments weren’t getting done at all, for a myriad of reasons both good and bad. Of course, there were some teachers who did little, but so many others were like me, putting in crazy hours for what seemed like little gain. We greatly appreciate the parents who put in the face to face time when we could not, as well as the ones who had to work and did what they could with the time and resources they had. On the other hand, I grew up homeschooled. My mom did an amazing job, sacrificing the extra income she could have made, to raise and educate me. It was always an annoyance to think how my parents had to give up some of their lessened paycheck to fund the schooling of others with more, to receive none if it back in the form of school supplies or anything similar.

Most of the "homeschooling" is not the parents sitting down with the child and doing one on one learning, it's mostly the parents yelling at the kids to go on Zoom. Teachers absolutely deserve every bonus, they are still doing the same amount of work, no MORE work than ever and more stressed. Teachers teaching from Zoom is just as much work or sometimes even more difficult for them. Sorry former teacher here and had to give my two cents.

Pretty sure that particular post had to do with parents that are actually homeschooling their kids. And BTW, in my kids' school district the zoom teaching during the pandemic was pathetic at best. If not for my wife and I our kids would have all lost at least a year of advancement due to the absolute horrible curriculum the teachers came up with. My 6th grader spent the first half of this year practicing ADDITION and SUBTRACTION!!! That's just one example, I have three kids in school right now (elementary, middle, and high school) and it is terrible at every level. So spare me the "oh poor teachers" baloney. In my district, they dropped the ball big time.

I'm the lucky one out of my friends because I used to be a teacher and know how to handle all the crazy that it was at the beginning of everything. Once we all got into the swing of things it was easier. But my kids' teachers have gone so out of their way to try to make this year as wonderful as possible. I wish I could give them better gifts for the holidays and end of year, but I can only do what I can.

I homeschooled two children for 7 years. It's a lot harder than it looks but also really fun. At least in the elementary grades. The thing that annoys homeschoolers is that we pay taxes the same as everyone else yet the government pays approximately $8,000 per student to a public school but at most $1,000 to a homeschool parent and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get that. At least that's what it's like in BC. It's definitely something you have to be committed to and sacrifice for and it doesn't work for everyone

@CrazyCat Lady I wouldn't disagree with that. I wasn't personally too bothered by it. What annoys me more is parents who think they are homeschooling now when they're not. There's a big difference between actual homeschooling and getting your kids to sit in front of a computer. Not that I think kids should be forced to sit in front of a computer all day. The whole thing is hard on them and very sad in my opinion. If you have to stay home you might as well try your hand at real homeschooling

So as a teacher, I acknowledge that every country, let alone district, worked differently, but durring the pandemic my work load tripled, not only was I zoom teaching all my lessons, but I was having to plan brand new schemes of work untill 10/11pm most evenings. Because we weren't seeing the students in person, my schools policy is thay we have to mark twice as many pieces of work to check progress and understanding, meaning I was marking 1000 essays every 6 weeks, on top of teaching 6 lessons a day, and planning. Meaning I was working on average 12-14 hour days on the weekday and 5/6 hours on average each day on the weekend. And as a form tutor once a week I also had to call all of my 30 students parents to do a wellbeing check. And those calls would take hours! My school also remained open for key worker students, so for one day a week I was in school running one of those rooms alongside teaching virtually. Yes it is incredibly difficult to home school, and I feel very sorry for parents with multiple children and very hectic work lives themselves, and I praise parents for all the support they have given, but the rhetoric that teachers have been lazy and done nothing is so insulting. I can't speak for every country or district but everyone in my local area and school who teaches has had the same experience, and I personally get very hurt by all these 'teachers are lazy views', when I literally made my condition flare severely (and kept working through it) from how much I was running myself ragged trying to provided the best online education possible.

I think it's awesome that the teachers received a bonus, they have worked hard, and I can only imagine the challenges in virtual learning. But I also understand where the parent is coming from. I think the parent was being sarcastic but trying to make a point at the same time. Even though homeschooling parents pay a lot in taxes, they don't receive a lot of benefits from the public school system. All of the books and supplies they use come out of pocket.

As a child of two teachers, I took that Karen idea kinda personally. I watch my poor parents struggle even now as an adult to make sure their students are prepared and well educated and even try to make the process easier for those they know have difficulties. And for a parent to say they deserve the same bonuses, I was angry. I’ve watched my parents’ health decline this past year because they were so stressed trying to covert everything to online and give up their own time to aid their students.

I’m a high school teacher and I worked so many more hours during the pandemic than I have ever worked. It took me hours to prepare assignments and then days to grade all of it… in addition to constant messages from kids at all hours of the day and night who didn’t read the instructions or watch the videos that I recorded them. And we were responsible for contacting kids and parents, especially when the kid was not participating online. I had quite a few 15-16 hour days when we were learning how to suddenly transition online. When we went back to school in August, kids had the option of online or in person… so basically we were doing 2x the work.

To clarify why teachers were getting bonuses during the pandemic: they were teaching kids in their classrooms, sitting there, AND kids online learning remotely from home AT THE SAME TIME. This is the definition of INSANE, and a bonus doesn't begin to compensate us for doing this. A homeschooling parent did not have to do anything differently during the pandemic.

Because she chose to have all 6 of those kids and do everything that came along with each and every one of them.
