I actually have a cat who probaly had pretty bad owners before me and my familly. He was decladed and he has a part of his pelt got yanked out and is now, only on that part, naked. He loves my parents very much and really is just an awesome cat with a bit of a fear of meeting new people but other than that is awesome.

Final story: You are absolutely _not_ the jerk and you did _not_ take it too far. What you did is in fact the _recommended_ way to deal with comments like the one you got there. They're just embarrassed that they can't hide behind their mean "jokes" and that you had found a way to shut them down without being/seeming rude. Judith Martin (aka Miss Manners) herself has gone on record stating that etiquette isn't _always_ about keeping those around you comfortable, and I have little doubt she would agree that you'd performed admirably and that your in-laws were in fact the rude ones here.

Story 1: thats animal cruelty at it's finest! Seriously these people are teaching their kids that its ok to reject their own dog every time they have health problems. Honestly that is stupid and no one should just abandon an animal just because it has health problems and they didn't want to waste the money just for them to take care of it. If the old owners neglect it and abandoned that animal then they have no rights to visit the new owner where their animal is at. That is neglect animal cruelty and trespassing

I have a dog that was gifted by the ex owner and I sometimes walk him to the shop they work at,the dog is happy but dosent really want to leave,he got sad at the first visits but im pretty sure he understood we will come later again

Story 1: i absolutely hate people like this in stories like this. There should be a nationwide, or even world wide, list of people who should be banned from ever owning an animal. The fact that they would actually call and ask if they could visit Scottie, at the shelter they left him at, is beyond sickening. These people are just beyond heartless and i'm honestly surprised the OP even allowed them to visit Scottie. OP has a bigger heart then i do....but no one had a bigger heart then Scottie. Poor dog. Story 2: Yeah, parents that try to live their dreams through their children are pretty awful and this mom is no exception. She clearly only saw dollar signs here, and didnt care about the OP at all. The fact that you would take away that money from your kids and just spend it on yourself just goes to show how horrible of a parent and person the mother was here. Glad the OP got away from the mom here, and hopefully has gone no contact with her now. Story 3: I always hate this attitude. Just because you are an "elder" does NOT mean you deserve any kind of respect. Period! It's really funny and ironic on how this old granny has the nerve to say that "teens think they deserve everything"..... well, what do you think you're doing, lady? Some people just go out in public just to be jerks. Story 4: Okay, first of all, shame on the police for not getting Max back from these awful former neighbours. Even though the mom agreed to let him visit, she still has every right in the world to get him back. At least the judge was smart enough to set things straight here, with both 'custody' of the dog and the neighbours paying the vet bill. Something tells me that they planned to steal Max here, and the vet visit was just a front for that. Story 5: OP is not a jerk at all. Who cares about her past? The finace clearly doesn't... so why are they being so rude and judgmental? This "joke" by the FIL was just a stupid jab at the OP's past and it really wasn't called for. If you can't explain a bad joke, then don't tell it. OP has absolutely no reason to apologize.

A similar story my neighbor had a cute dog who should go through a hole to get pets since his parents didn’t love him they just got rid of him and they said he destroyed the house and always barked even though the house was always quite and when I brought the dog to there house and the furniture inside was perfect

Story 2, the mom wants to be a famous singer. SHE should train her voice and become the singer she wanted to be. It's not okay for her to force her dream on someone else, but I do feel for her. I guess she just needs to hear that it's never too late for her to be who she wants to be
