The story about the kids: they are going to get bullied hard when their friends find out they still sleep in mommy's bed. OP's wife is the issue, not the kids. She's having codependency issues with the kids. I would set an ultimatum. The kids sleep in their own bed, or we get divorced.

As a kid who found it really hard to stop sharing a bed with my parents or brother I was still almost never bed sharing by the time I was nine. When I was nine I only ever slept in the same bed with my parents or my brother if I had a nightmare or a really, really bad day. These kids are going to be completely emotionally stunted if not pressed to be more independent and stop relying on the constant comfort of their mother/sibling. Step dad definitely NTA

I went looking for this story, and there is a little note at the end of the story that was not included by the reader. wife and daughter are both on the spectrum, son is adhd. I don't think the son's is relevant, but the wife and daughter does put a new twist on it. I have a daughter with Autism myself, so I'm very familiar with many of the potential changes to expected life style one may need to make to address anything that comes up. It doesn't make OP in the wrong by any means, but it does provide additional perspective that OP probably needs to tackle this from a different angle. There is probably a gap in communication happening, and possibly some other dependencies going on that are little more difficult to address. That said, they do need to be addressed, keeping in mind where on the spectrum each person is at. Without knowing this, it is hard to consider what the proper course of action is, and it would also provide context for whether anyone in the family is simply just catering to atypical behaviors, or addressing them. If things are being catered to, it can actually be harmful, even if it appears at face value to be helpful. That said, it would say it is somewhat telling how little OP values this aspect in that it was a side note at the very end of the story, more of an afterthought, when it is actually the biggest aspect of the situation to address when it comes to finding a solution.

Kids used to share beds with siblings. I did until she joined the navy at 19. My momma share with her sister and brother. If that was the 1920s and 39's. My daddy shared with 4 brothers. Except when sick did I sleep with momma. And that ended when I was 8 or so. Not stunted but after 1yo should be in it's own bed.

Story 3: It's going to be a SHOCK for the kids when their peers, be they friends or future partners, learn of what is considered "normal" by their Mom's family of origin. If it's discovered by classmates it will be a teasing field day, if it's a partner this could be something that they'd find creepy enough to be a deal breaker. Story 5: If the Dad is ENCOURAGING this behavior, which seems to be the case with lines like "they should only get you the best," the nephew is going to find himself with DAMN few people attending his future birthday parties unless he's got a lot to offer them. Seriously this would seem bratty to most, & will only attract the most transactional "friends" who'd expect some level of "tit for tat," & unless the OP's family is in a position to at least have that as a carrot in the future, (via politics or business,) that is going to be one very lonely kid. Story 6: You summed it up, that just eating the toppings makes the remaining "pizza" just vaguely tomato-ish bread. That's just ruined pizza, so OP's BF is right to say it's ruined. It is perhaps overreacting to not be okay with ordering a new one, but damn that's inconsiderate.

Story 1: Wow, OP's mother isn't even subtle about her entitlement or lack of intelligence; she keeps calling it *HER* day. It's not *HER* day, if anything, it's OP's day (as well as their wife's of course). This is not *her* day, this is not something *she* has the right to complain about, technically it's not even really any of her business - she's involved because OP and their wife chose to involve her, and they can just as quickly choose to un-involve her, and all she can do (and from the sounds of it, would do) is complain.

Back in 2000 I had a c-section with my first child. My mil came that very day and proceeded to make herself at home. I had had some friends come for a short visit. They understood that I was still recovering. Mil didn't care. I had the curtains closed as the bright sunlight was hurting my eyes. I was also very warm so I had the air conditioner on. Mil came in, set down her bags and then proceeded to make my hospital room comfortable... for herself. 😮 she shut off the air conditioning entirely and flung the curtains wide open. I was furious. We were paying for this room and everything, not her. She really had no right to do all that. I got up and painfully hobbled to the air conditioner to turn it back on and then shut the curtains again. After that I turned to her and just glared straight into her eyes. She was in a huff and stomped her way into my bathroom. She locked herself in and stayed there for at least 35 minutes. I rolled my eyes and was glad she was out of sight. No one went to check on her or try to get her to come back out. When she came back out she just shouted "well I know when I am not wanted!" And stormed out. My mouth dropped open. I couldn't believe this much older woman was acting this way. I know it was her first grandchild but still. I was glad she left but hated feeling like I was the jerk...

@@MY-yr4xw No, She was on a vengeance trip ever since. It was sad as my mom lived over 2000 miles away and MIL was close by so that my son would have a grandma... thankfully he also had her mother, his great grandmother, nearby and she was a lovely soul. I still miss her to this day. My son was named after her late husband. She loved that so much. MIL would still see him now and then but I refused to go with him and his dad. I think that day one of the big issues was that I never said no or disagreed with her in all the years before my son was born. After my son was born though the rules changed and I put my foot down. I guess my mama bear came out. :P She didn't like that one bit. HAH.

Story 3: The first time I heard it all I got was that the boy is nine and he's still sleeping in his parent's bed. The second time.. they're thirteen and nine? Unless they're both developmentally delayed, have major anxiety issues, or something else is going on they are both beyond the age of it being normal that they want to sleep with mummy every night. They need to be told to sleep in their beds and to respect the fact that mum and dad also need their own space and privacy. Once in a blue moon after a nightmare is one thing, but every night? And the fact the wife thinks it's okay that the kids take up so much room her own husband is left with no room to sleep? She has no respect for him, nor his boundaries. Maybe he should seek a therapist for the kids and one for them as a couple. This isn't normal nor healthy for relationship dynamics.

Mom and dad should’ve shut that kid down the moment they realized he was actually ranking gifts. My daughter is turning six next week and this weekend we are having a full scale birthday party for her for the first time. Being my only child, my mom’s only grandchild, and the first baby born in my mom’s family in over a decade, she is definitely on the spoiled side. She also has absolutely ZERO filter and while the results of that are typically hilarious and/or adorable, I was concerned enough about what she might say to have already had at least three conversations with her about the dos and don’ts of receiving presents.

Seriously sleeping in mom's and dad's bed at that age? Thats way too old. My parents stopped that crap when was 3-4 years old. The only time I even slept in their room was on the floor with an air mattress during the hotter parts of summer cause it was one of 2 rooms in our house with a/c and the other was shut off at night to save money. And that's not "co-sleeping" that's not sweating to all hell cause its 85 at night in your room and and opening the window makes it worse and the fan just circulates hot air. Ya know because we are poor and can't afford to have another A/C in my room cause of the electric bill being too high. Ah the joys of being poor.

What the wife is doing is going to give the kids massive dependency issues. Issues that will affect not only their ability to take care of themselves as adults, but also in building relationships. I remember witnessing something like story #4 sometime around last year. Someone yelled at the cashier for the delay in food (mind you they were understaffed at the busiest time of year) the cashier could only apologize and get the food out shortly, then happened a little later with another person’s order. At some point when I was talking to my brother I noticed the food was taking a while, so I gently went up to the cashier asking how long our order would take only to find out that it was accidentally dropped, despite the cashier weakly apologizing, I assured them it wasn’t a big deal because I could understand the stress they went through because of working at summer camp (which requires customer service). While my drink size was increased because of how kind I was, I really didn’t express my frustration despite holding up my father because some people really don’t analyze the situation that some people are put through, honestly saddening sometimes

Dear Am I the Jerk, you left out an important note at the end of the story (story 3), where it is revealed the mother and daughter have autism. As a father with a daughter on the spectrum, I ask that you not ignore such comments as it trivializes the condition. This is the single most important part of the conflict and the number one thing that needs to be addressed to resolve it properly. The fact that OP left it until a side note at the end shows that he also has trivialized it's impact, and while that doesn't make him an outright jerk, it also means that at the very best he is in neutral territory. He needs to educate himself a little more to understand autism, and then make sure he and his wife are actually on the same page in this conversation instead of assuming it, because when it comes to someone with autism, this can be very easy to do and never even realize it unless you specifically address it.

My thoughts are that no one is the asshole the step dad just didn't speak up until he got so mad about it that he blew up and now everyone in the family things he's an ass, the best fix for this is for them to get a big bed for one of the kids rooms and then if the mom wants to sleep with her kids and coddle them she can go ahead and do that.

Story 3: This is unhealthy behavior, the kids and the mother seemingly have a case of codependancy. Kids regularly sleeping with their mom at ages 13 and 9 is wrong, but that aside, OP should not have to give up his bed for that. Story 5: OP is a better parent than the actual parents. I suspect that the parents aren't just enabling this kid's behavior, they're the ones who likely caused it by being crappy people. Story 6: I don't get why you would specifically eat the toppings unstead of just another slice. The boyfriend is right, you ruined the rest of the pizza that way. Though I do think it was unreasonable of him to remain mad even after you offered to buy him a new pizza, that was mature on your part.

This was during Covid times so the Mother to be was allowed only to have one person in delivery. GM’s plan was to invite several of her female friends to watch the birth. She was given the facts by the Hospital. She went ballistic. Then she insisted that her Son could not be the one in delivery. It was woman’s time. No men allowed. Full filming of the birth was planned. The DIL didn’t want GM in the room. She wanted her husband. Moreover, GM was a firm CV-19 denier. Neither the Mom to be or Dad to be were not going to have GM to any baby contact until the infant had greater immunity.
