Looks like this story happens in Brazil, and as a Brazilian myself, I can say that sometimes (it's a gamble on if you're lucky or have enough money + good lawyers) the Justice system is a completely joke. And well if this happened on 80's there is pretty sure that they alleged that they were disciplinating their son. It was pretty common physical disciplice back then.

The list of damage and then there being little to no legal repercussions makes me feel like the story is either false or embellished. Edit: I'm realizing from the structure of the post that this likely occurred in a country with different legal standards to my own.
