Just noticed something kind of cool five minutes after I posted this: At 0:43, when Malfoy sticks his hand out to Harry, Harry looks down at Malfoy's hand, accompanied by some descending notes in the horns. When Harry looks back up, the horn plays an _ascending_ note. Very subtle (maybe not even intended), but mildly interesting I guess 🤷‍♂️

You could make John Williams score reductions of Among The Clouds (from Always), Ballroom Scene (from The Witches of Eastwick) and Sugarland Express Theme. :)

The more I listen and study the details, the more I consider The Philosopher's Stone to be one of the best of JW's career, maybe even top 5--between the musical and technical complexity and density, the appealingness of the listening experience to the "uneducated" listener, and the "world building" of the music within the franchise
@zoltan902
@zoltan902 3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to consider how positive the British influence is on JW's writing. This score has such a Romantic, stately grandeur to it, which I think is what makes it so superior. Imagine how different (and possibly worse) it would have been if Spielberg, with his highly Americanised idea for the film, had directed it. He would of course have had JW write the music, but it would have been very differently inspired.
@jakegearhart
@jakegearhart 3 жыл бұрын
It's by far #1 in my opinion. Not my favorite score, but I believe his objectively best score. Every single theme from the first two films is based off of one or more of the three themes he introduced in the suite he wrote for the promotional reel of the film.

Missed these vids. Good to have you back, especially with another brilliant JW cue - tbh my favorite bit is the very end, how the “Great Hall” theme slowly dies off but keeps coming back in little tentative bits of clarinet, bassoon, flute, etc. Very colorful and fun, and a great segue. If I may make a suggestion for a future vid - how about “Whispering Winds” from ‘The Land Before Time’? (Just the first part, since the whole thing is like 9 minutes long.) James Horner does some really fun things with counterpoints, producing a sort of tear-jerking fugue-like texture that’d be interesting to analyze IMO. (I know the score’s rare, so I can send it your way if you don’t have it.)

1:26 this part gave me goosebumps, it reminded me of the early Harry Potter PC game soundtracks by Jeremy Soule, who emulates Williams for the Great Hall motif and in other music in the first three games. Really fantastic and evocative compositions. Also I got a giggle from "McGonagall's Modulation," it gives me Harry Potter crackfic vibes

Thank you so much for these videos! I appreciate all the work you're doing. The only problem i have is that I can't follow the score so easily because of the overlapping of instrument families... like in the 4th page.. reading from the bottom -> up, we have percussion, then strings, then strings again, then woods, then brass, then strings yet again (?), then double percussion then harp?? I guess you arrange the instruments like in what register and octave they're playing at that moment? Being used to read full scores in the usual orchestral order makes me really confused... I guess tho that this way is easier for people not so used to reading full scores (?). Would you consider making a video where you separate the staffs by instrument family? Like having 2 staffs for strings on the bottom, 2 (or 1) for percussion above, 2 for brass and 2 for woods? Either way, thank you for those videos, I'm in awe of the work you put on them!

Hi Brad, I am so grateful for your work - it is so well done, thank you! I have a few niggly questions. How do you know that the time signature changes from 4/4 to 3/4 in measure 6? And where you mention that the music in the film actually comes in when Malfoy says, "I can help with that.." - where did you find the original music that Williams wrote that did not make it to the film? Also, have you transcribed this by ear or do you have an actual score? (I'm guessing by ear, as I don't think Williams has released his scores to the public, unless you know something I don't!). Thank you :)

There are details in this analysis that's pretty much impossible to know just by listening like the "Synth (bell-like)" is identical to the handdrawn score that is available. So he uses the score.

Such an amazing score! I really wonder what would have happened if John Williams could have scored the second movie by himself.... Would that have given him more grounds to continue his themes he'd developed in on into the third movie? Would he then have stayed on beyond that point? I can't help but think that the Harry Potter themes (not just hedwig, but all the themes introduced in this film) could have become as timeless and recognized as Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

@@bordeauxcolor You're right, but William Ross helped him write the second film. Ross used cues from the first film and adapted them to fit various scenes in the second film. Then in the third movie, almost all the themes from the first two movies are thrown out.

Those analysis aren´t correct. You are analysing it from tonality viewpoint. Its not that F major is tonic, Tonic is Db major with bitonal C major. And the Bbm part is the vi of that key. The cadences in the end of each phrase are there just to escape cadences like IV>V>I motion. Thats what creates this piece.
