You can add a concrete base in the future but the stringers will last longer with a 8” footer fwiw. We do these often and pack soil rock with hand tamp and then frame a 2X4x10 footings usually 1 bag of quick Crete

Steps look good. Should have put some End Cut on the cut edges of your stringers
@MrWaldorfian2 жыл бұрын
Good job on the stairs. They look good and solid. One question: Did you put the stringers right down on the soil? Maybe putting some patio stones or something underneath will keep those stringers from rotting prematurely? I know they are pressure treated but Mother Nature doesn't care.
@BreakFreeHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I didn't on this build, i actually re build the stairs to drop them down because i thought it was causing water penetration issues (turned out not to be the stairs) but i put a bottom support on the next one.

You can figure out steps fairly easy in coded states rules are 8” max rise and 9” min tread steps not varying more than1/4” any where
@etherx86043 жыл бұрын
Are you gonna paint / stain / waterproof those steps?
@BreakFreeHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we will stain these when the pressure treated wood dries out.
@etherx86043 жыл бұрын
@@BreakFreeHomestead Do you plan to remove the steps so you can treat all six sides of each board?
@jimmys.8062 Жыл бұрын
@@etherx8604 It's not necessary with treated, provided you live in a warmer climate like mine. North US and very wet places are probably different rules.

The bottom of the stairs has no support. Soil erosion will cause some problem for you in the future. I love the project.
@BreakFreeHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up! Next time i will put the lower support but for this set i might install a backer support near the bottom so give it come more rigidity. Thanks for sticking with us!
@travispolson46152 жыл бұрын
Yes. The best thing to do is pour a small concrete slab for the bottom to rest on and secure it to the concrete with brackets made for that.
@jimmys.8062 Жыл бұрын
@@travispolson4615 This was my thought as well. IF you really want it to last, you build the connection to the ground like a fence post with the concrete piers as deep as needed. Then connect with a slab if you need a landing.

you built a set of steps on plain dirt ? no solid block or concrete? they will pull off the house in 6 months
@josephbohme7917 Жыл бұрын
I hate notching stairs when there are great inside tread galv braces made. Why weaken the good 2x12. No brick/blocks and drain trough footing even Temporary I guess.
