I have CPTSD, and one way I deal is by my TV being on all the time (it's complicated why, I'll spare you). It must be "happy sounds". This fits that bill, so I can quote it nearly word for word, just from having TV in the background at all times, lol There are so many things I can do that with. (I get called out for "watching TV all day", but whatever...it just MUST be on. I'm not sitting there staring at it.) Anyway, said all that to say that I get the "old friend" reference.

Aren't you guys sweet? My home was very violent as a child. This violence would occur on weekends when everyone was home. Back in the day, there were like 2 or 3 channels on the TV, and those were often cruddy. On weekends, there was nothing. So...silence. There was danger in that silence. It was rare for there to be violence during the week when there were sitcoms and game shows on (I guess the adults were too tired for it???). So now, even in my 50s, I don't like the silence. I like the sounds of sitcoms, game shows, or funny movies in the background. I will even stream the old 1970s Match Game sometimes because it reminds me of those safe times, ( like during summer vacations when no adults were home) when I could just be a kid and play. Those sounds were in that safe background. So now it's a comfort. I haven't lived in violence, for many, many years, but when you literally cut your teeth on it, it's just a part of you. It's definitely a harmless way to deal with trauma, but people being what they are will say ugly things to me about it being on all the time. You'd think people would grow up and realize not all of us had it easy as kids, but no. It's also what hubby and I like to do on weekends. We cuddle and watch movies or TV. It's my safe space. Glad to "meet" kindred spirits! :)

"Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?" Fun Fact: Jim Carrey chipped his tooth years earlier, but had the cap removed for the film to make his character look more deranged. Lost In Translation Fact: The bikini girl played by Anna Anka is speaking Swedish in the bikini bus scene. She greets with "Hej allihopa" (Hey everybody) and says goodbye with "Hejdå" (Bye). What Script Fact: When Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) are in the car, Lloyd asks if Harry wants to hear the most annoying sound in the world. This was not originally in the script, you can tell by the look on Jeff Daniels' face. Legendary Director Fact: Jeff Daniels claimed he was at a golf course one day when Clint Eastwood told him that he had just seen the movie. Daniels braced himself for a negative reaction, but to his surprise Eastwood wanted to tell Daniels that the bathroom scene had happened to him once when he was on a date. Daniels later co-starred with Eastwood in Blood Work (2002).

I have a Jim Carey story for y'all. I am from Memphis. I was having dinner with a guy that worked in marketing for St. Jude Children's Hospital. He told me a lot of celebrity stories about them visiting the hospital. Jim Carey went there to visit and entertain the children. He got on the elevator to go to another floor to see more children, and asked the St. Jude escort to stop the elevator. He completely collapsed, crying (a lot of these children were stricken with very serious or terminal diseases). He then collected himself, and continued to the next floor to visit and entertain more kids. This was decades ago that I heard this story, but it stuck with me, so I have nothing but respect for that man.

The malapropism (mistaking one word for another) that Lloyd was referring to when he said "rapist wit" was in reference to the phrase "rapier wit" with a rapier being a very sharp, pointed sword, and is defined as the "ability to deliver witty and cutting remarks".

Addicted to your reactions, J. This is probably the movie I’ve seen the most times in my life. Fun fact for you, Sea Bass is played by Hall of Fame NHL player (and current president of the Boston Bruins) Cam Neely. He recently told a story on a hockey podcast about his time in this film. “I kick the door open and I’m supposed to have this surprised look on my face. ‘Cut! Cam, can you get a little bit more of a shocked look on your face?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ Second take, third take, fourth take - now I’m freaking out. I’m like, I got Jim Carey sitting on a milk crate, he’s making ten million or whatever he did for that movie. I’m wasting everyone’s time. So I pulled Jim aside, I go, ‘Listen, Jim, please just bear with me - I’m really struggling here.’ He goes, ‘Ah, Cam, don’t worry about it. I’ve had some scenes that have taken 50 takes - just relax.’ Next take, I kick the door open and he’s mooning me, so they got the shot.” And that’s the scene in the movie, you can tell because Sea Bass is surprised but can’t help but smile 😂

About 25 years ago I was in Chicago. They didn't have skin magazines in the street dispensers like newspapers, but they did have things like the old "Trading Post" papers but for escorts. They had a couple of different ones with all kinds of services offered. I did take a couple of samples because I didn't think anyone back home would believe it if I told them. Harry actually did end up hitting Carry in the back of the legs. Not sure if it was an accident or he just didn't realize how hard the hit would be. Carry did a great job of playing it off though.

The big, tough trucker guy at the cafe…the “Sea Bass” character is played by Cam Neely, an NHL Hall of Famer. One of the best power forwards to ever play…and he was/is huge. 6’3” 235lbs when he played. A no joke, huge tough guy and hardcore player, who also scored a bunch. He was a huge star in hockey when this came out. He’s now the president of the Boston Bruins (the team he famously played for). These directors are huge New England area sports fans and they put a lot of star athletes (especially guys who play in New England/northeast part of the US) in their movies in small roles.

They made actually made a 3rd movie called Dumb and Dumberer When Harry met Lloyd and explains how he gets the chipped tooth in the 3rd movie. They used different actors for Harry and Lloyd that are look alikes but younger versions of them.

Glad to see this review. This was a great movie back in the day. Quoted many lines from this movie for years. Oh, and i love your brown dog. He/she is always looking at you, and almost always has their tail wagging.

Harland Williams is the cop with the pee bottle. He is a stand-up comedian with an offbeat sense of humor. He got a few Disney kid's movies too.

Jim Carrey was a huge part of my childhood. I watched everything, even his serious roles, on a loop. I hadn't watched Dumb and Dumber since I was in high school, and that movie STILL makes me laugh. God bless Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels for being in the greatest buddy comedy of all time 🙏

I honestly forgot how good this movie was. We now know Jay can identify demons. Excellent reaction and editing, it was great watching Jay actively turning off his brain to enjoy it. God bless you guys with excellence!

the opening song was performed by apache indian 9:32 obviously meant not as depressing as that part of providence 25:09 obviously meant accommodation, but this was before it was made illegal everywhere to sleep where ever you wanted 26:12 there's a youtube about these two brothers who tried that and showed us why it wouldn't work

LOL, same reaction I always have when I hear that music there at the beginning. A great movie of the 90s, featuring what is quite possibly THE greatest scene in the history of American cinema.... you'll know the scene when you see it. Oh, and that song, New Age Girl.... it was something special to some of us naughty, naughty teenage boys of the 90s.

Lloyd meant a rapier wit. Meaning sharp like the sword. Also Clint Eastwood called the scene where Harry is on the toilet the greatest comedy scene of all time. He loved the movie.

at 24:23, the two guys standing outside the store WERE actual random cutomers that happen to be there just standing n drinkin while the camera was recording, JIM CARREY improvised with them, their confused WTF reaction is authentic, afterwards, they asked them if they mind signing a release form to be put the scene in the movie
