Viggo Mortensen, the actor who plays Aragorn, actually bought the horse who plays Brego as well as Arwen's white horse and another horse Aragorn rode in the movies as soon as they were done filming. He kept Brego and the other horse until they died of old age a few years ago, and I think I read somewhere that he gifted Arwen's horse to the stuntwoman who rode it in the movie.

There's a sweet backstory to the one-eyed man at Helm's Deep who gave the order to fire the arrows; appearantly the actor was like that in real life and was super concious about it, hiding behind an eye patch, but the director Peter Jackson convinced him to take it off for that one scene, assuring him that it looked awesome, and since then the actor got many compliments on looking badass and was no longer insecure about it.

Here's why Aragorn looks so good for his age. His ancient ancestor was Elrond's brother. Elrond's father, Earendil, accomplished an impossible mission, defeating a great evil in ancient times. As a reward, Earendil's sons, Elrond and his brother, Elros, were allowed to choose whether they would live the life of a man or that of an elf. Elrond chose a long, elvish life, though he's still known as "Elrond Half-Elven", since his father was actually half elf and half human. Elrond's brother, Elros, chose to live his life as a man, though he and his descendants would still live much longer lives than regular men. Elros lived to be at least 500 years old. Elros and his followers were loyal to the gods that taught the elves everything they knew, and as a reward, the Gods gave Elros' people an island called Numenor. It was the land closest to the land of the gods. Eventually, even that kingdom lost its way, and a corrupt ruler, his mind twisted by Sauron who pretended to be a helpful advisor, tried to sail to war with the gods to conquer their land. The consequence was that the Numenorean fleet was destroyed and Numenor was swallowed in the sea. However, one of the royal men of that land remained loyal to the gods, and he and his followers were granted safe passage across the sea and back to Middle Earth. They established the greatest human kingdoms in Middle Earth, Arnor in the north, and Gondor in the south. That loyal king's name was Elendil, and his son was Isildur, both direct ancestors of Aragorn. Those were the two leaders of men that fought Sauron in the beginning of the first movie. Isildur was the one that kept the ring after defeating Sauron. Fun fact: Because Elrond had the power to choose between the lifespan of a man and that of an elf, his daughter, Arwen, Aragorn's love, has the same ability, which is why she was also able to choose to live a mortal life with Aragorn. Sorry, I love the world in these movies so much, and I read most of the books about it. It's hard not to share the information with others.

The brotherhood of Boromir and Faramir gets me every time and shows how truly noble Boromir actually was. Their father shows clear favoritism which many sons would use to their advantage but Boromir consistently sides with his (less favored) brother, loves him, and looks out for him. It also shows how corrupting the ring is. Boromir was a great, great man (that cared more for his brother than his own elevation and power) and even he fell to its influence simply by being near it. B&F deserve their own miniseries.

Very similar to what happened in Stand By Me between Morty and his brother, Denny. Remember how the father was only focused on Denny, but Denny was always trying to get his father to pay attention to Morty. That was a great movie

That scene also illustrates the pressure Boromir was under to bring back the ring and not fail. If his father had not asked him to do it claiming it would save their people, Boromir would not have fallen prey to the power of the ring.

I love how much they simplified tracking. any footstep will tell you a heap of things. If its pressed deep into the ground, then its either on account of a heavy burden, or running. The scene with Eowyn’s stew was made because the catering company feeding bought them some nasty tasting food and Peter Jackson as a way of telling them that.😂

1: like I mentioned in your reaction to the first part. The movie was shot in New Zealand. Of course if you look at the map of middle earth it's Europe. You can actually take a tour to lots of the locations. 2: Andy Serkis not only did the voice to Gollum/Smeagol. He also wore a special CGI motion tracking suit. So all that crawling and moving around of the character Gollum/Smeagol was done by Andy Serkis. You should definitely check out the behind the scenes footage of him doing it. it's Very interesting. 3: in the scene where Aragorn kicked the helmet out of anger for "failing to save the hobbits" the actor Viggo Mortensen actually broke some of his toes and that scream was authentic pain from breaking his toes but he kept with the scenes till they called cut. That part was so good they actually kept it in the movie because it was so authentic and "real".

The actor playing Grima Wormtongue voiced Chuckie in "Child's Play". It was surprising how weak the gate was at Helm's deep, and it didn't even have a drawbridge. Also note that the "wild trees" had moved up out of Fangorn Forest to block the orcs. Those trees hadn't been there before, and they shredded the orcs that ran in there. Lastly, the novel of course went into much greater detail about Ent language and how long it took them to say anything. A couple of sample sentences for a rock, for example, and that merely saying hello might take the better part of a morning.

5:05m- That is literally what he is. Also, Gollum is so suffused with dark energies from his exposure to The Ring that the pure and wholesome energies of the elves do give him pain. It's the same reason he can't eat the lembas. 10:25 - Traditional orcs have the same kind of physical limitations as elves and men, but Saruman bred the Uruk-Hai to have greater strength and stamina, not to mention a single-mindedness that borders on the automaton. The old-school orcs that joined with Saruman's warband on the way are having trouble keeping up. 11:47 - It's worth noting that in the book, we get to this scene before we learn what's happening with Merry and Pippin, so all we have to go on is what Eomer tells Aragorn here. We don't get to learn what happens to the hobbits until later. 13:23 - This is method acting in it's purest form. Vigo Mortensen, Aragorn's actor, broke his toe kicking that helmet. Rather than stopping the scene, he directed his pain into the scripted scream of anguish. 18:03 - If that were a dragon, it would be at least 6 times that size. That is a Fell Beast of Mordor. 19:25 - He's only died once so far. 19:43 - Less 'leveled up' than 'got promoted.' 20:12 - Wet your lips first and pull them a little tighter. 20:41 - Like I mentioned last video, New Zealand. 22:23 - They ain't. There was never any chance they could get through The Black Gate. We've no clue what Gandalf's plan would have been, but it wouldn't have been this way. Gollum knows this, but this is where Frodo asked him to take them, so this is where he took them. 23:12 - That's elven cloaks for ya. 26:34 - There is some debate among Tolkien fans as to whether Theoden was ACTUALLY under a spell or whether he was just crushed under a net of bad news and twisted truths woven by Wormtongue at Saruman's bidding. The text can be interpreted either way, but the movie leans heavily into the enchantment side of the argument. (I personally lean the other way.) 33:06 - You spoke earlier about Gollum being crazy. Here it is plain for all to see. Two personalities are at war within Gollum: Smeagol, who is a remnant of the person he was before he found the Ring awakened by Frodo's kindness, and Gollum, the bitter, spiteful, murderous personality that craves only to reclaim The Precious. Sam recognizes the duality and calls the first personality 'Slinker' (because he's always sneaking around) and the other 'Stinker' (because he's conniving and can't be trusted). Andy Serkis, the actor who plays Gollum, steals the show bringing both Smeagol and Gollum to life. 36:59 - Aragorn is the last descendant of the kings of Numenor (basically Tolkien's version of Atlantis). The Numenorians were descended from the offspring of Beren and Luthien, a human man and an elf woman. Their tale is the great tragedy of Middle Earth history, like Romeo and Juliet. As a descendant of elven blood, Aragorn has inherited a small portion of the elves' great lifespan (elves are immortal, but Numenoreans are still mortal). Aragorn and Arwen are set to repeat history, with Arwen needing to choose between eternal life as an elf, who can eventually return to the Timeless Lands of the Valar (like the elves we saw in the first movie), or to love Aragorn and be condemned to die and to go to the unknown realms where human souls pass to. 38:13 - That is a Warg. Remember how we said Orcs used to be Elves until Morgoth tortured them to insanity? Imagine the orcs did the same thing to wolves. 40:18 - Smart move. This part wasn't in the books. It was added as a dramatic device to allow them to explore other story avenues for a moment. So, something I should have mentioned earlier. Although Saruman retains the title of The White in the movies, in the books he forsakes that color when he turns against the forces of good. He declares himself 'Saruman of the Many Colors,' because white is plain and ordinary and he believes his power encompasses everything. As an optometrist would be quick to point out, 'many colors' is NOT superior to white because white is ALL COLORS. Many colors is white fractured, broken. 48:10 - In the movie, the Ring plays upon Faramir's desire for his father's approval and drives him to take Frodo to Minas Tirith via Osgiliatih. Faramir fails the test of the Ring. In the book, Faramir resists the Ring's temptations and he let's Smeagol and the hobbits go, thus proving that he IS stronger than Boromir. It's a bit of character assassination made purely for the purpose of adding another action scene to the climax of this film. 48:41 - One, for Fellowship. Of course, this whole trilogy was shot in one long go (not counting the second trip to film Extended Edition content), so the one award basically counts for all three. 49:49 - The dwarves have ALWAYS kept to their own, and the elves are LITERALLY running away from the world, so Theoden's pessimism isn't entirely unjustified. 52:50 - In the fandom, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are called 'The Three Hunters.' They're the ultimate Bro-Bond in the Tolkien mythos (with the exception of Frodo and Sam). Also, in the book, no elves came to Helm's Deep. Other than Legolas, there's little elven presence after Rivendell. They were busy fighting battles far from Rohan and Gondor. 15:20 - Legolas: Shield Surfing 15 years before Breath of the Wild made it popular. Brief note: this movie actually ends slightly earlier than the book does. The last part of Frodo's story in this book was moved to the beginning of the next movie because that part would have been a bit thin otherwise.

That point you made about Aragons bond with his horse is true because in WW1 horses actually got medals for bravery and many helped their wounded riders get to safety. Tolkien's experiences from WW1 inspired him to write LOTR after he created the Elven language

Gandalf keeps coming back because he is literally an Angel tasked with saving Middle Earth. Technically he is a celestial being, known as the Maiar and was created directly by the gods. They include all Gandalf's fellow wizards, the Balrog, and Sauron himself.

Merry and Pippin have a great arc in these films. They are almost bumbling idiots at the start of the story but at the end they both found purpose and rose up to the extraordinary events around them. They were MVP's in "The Two Towers".

If you find the time, the books these movies are based on are pretty amazing, too. You really get to know all the characters better and see their relationships grow and develop, which in the case of Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas, is almost worth reading the books just for the moments they're together.

It’s such a delight to see people discover this singular story, and these beautiful films. I usually focus on how impeccable Tolkien’s writing is but we have to take a moment to appreciate the walking badassery; the living fucking legend that was Christopher Lee. Lee was a direct descendant of Emperor Charlemagne on his mother’s side. He would produce a metal album about his conquest… at the age of 92. When he was ten he was woken up to receive visitors; namely Prince Usopov, the man who assassinated Rasputin. Years later he would portray “The Mad Monk”, with the approval of Rasputins daughter (“You have his gaze”, she told him). At the onset of WW2 he enlisted as a fighter pilot. A visual defect prevented him from flying, so he wound up in North Africa attached to the first ever modern Special Forces group. Journalists spent years trying to get him to talk. He would ask, “Can you keep a secret? Well, so can I.” After the end of the war, and a brief stint tracking war criminals, he decided to become an actor, playing Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Mummy in career and genre-defining roles. Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond series, wanted Lee to play the titular Dr. No in the first Bond movie, but was passed over. He would however go on to play the titular Man with the Golden Gun. He was offered roles in both “Star Wars” and “Halloween” which he turned down and later deeply regretted. Finally he met JRR Tolkien in a pub and completely fan-boyed, stating how much he loved the books and how much he would love to play Gandalf if a film was ever made. Tolkien gave him his blessing. He was one of the most prolific actors in film, did more sword fights than any actor in film, spoke multiple languages, and married a fucking supermodel. And that’s barely scratching the surface. Christopher Lee was truly The Most Interesting Man in the World.

Frodo is 50 years old at this point in the movie. He was 33 when Bilbo left the Shire. The movie doesn't show this, but 17 years passed from that time until Gandalf got back to Frodo and told him to leave the Shire with the ring. Hobbits do age more slowly than men. Frodo also aged very slowly while he had the ring. When he sets out on his journey, he's 50 years old.

I am Impressed! So glad you came back with part 2 this quickly. You were already one of my favorites and you just got promoted. Is your big dog named Drogo? OMG. Frodo's father was named Drogo. If they'd killed Grima Wormtongue, he wouldn't have been there to kill Saruman. The Ents are the 'shepherds of the trees'. They're good guys. The trees that marched off to Helm's Deep are awake, but not Ents. They're angry and dangerous and full of hatred for Orcs.

8:02 The reason Legolas can see that far is, essentially, the earth is flat for Elves and the horizon doesn't block his view. Elves can see much farther than men because they can see *straighter* than men.

Gollum/Smeagol was voiced and motion-captured by Andy Serkis. You'll remember him from Age of Ultron and Black Panther. In those movies, he was the South African thief that had the vibranium arm cannon. He got betrayed and killed by Killjoy. He's an incredible voice actor. He even did the voice for a couple of the orcs and Uruk Hai.

Denethor II (Boromr’s father) was done dirty: He was way more noble & mighty in the books. Not to mention he contended wills with Sauron for decades nonstop & ontop of that even now he was never broken nor could Sauron alter what Denethor would see in the palantir even then he couldn’t control what Denethor had control of which was how he chose to interpret the visions given to him. Using it all to Gondor’s advantage! ❤ he also lit the beacons and got the women & children far away from the city longer ahead of time. So the movie butchered him as well as faramir but they didn’t butcher faramir as badly thankfully. He could have been shown to give Pippen his newest order to light the beacons so then it wouldn’t change the scene much at all as presented! The story here is Faramir’s birth ended up killing his mother Finduilas(named after an elvish princess from the era of Children Of Hùrin was set in);she was a Numenorean woman of the Faithful which her ancestors survived the Cataclysm of Númenor by the way! He was hurt deeply by her death. But also Aragorn when he went by the name gifted to him as Thorongil Denethor’s father basically overshadowing him from his own father so he is as psychology goes: treated Boromir the same way his father treated Aragorn/Thorongil. Note that Boromir and Faramir are half Númenorean which is a big thing as far as the legendarium goes! Denethor actually did many things the movie shows him not doing or neglecting. He was VERY competent and mighty in many craft and (even a lore-master to a degree). He had quite alot of mental and “magical” might which is why he could contend with Sauron too without being harmed in there process in any way!

Keep in mind that the movies are like a good burger with home fries and a shake. The books are like fillet mignon with sauteed mushrooms and a fine wine. Then there's The Legendarium; think of it as an endless soup, salad and dessert bar that's never closed.😃 Tolkein was a linguist first. His interest was the old sagas and songs and creation mythology of Northern Europe. But there's a great big gap in them. Britain was conquered so many times that the myths and legends of the original Bretons was lost a long, long time ago. So as he played with making up a language ( which eventually became the speech of the High Elves ) he decided to make up a new world from the beginning of time, to replace what was lost. It was just a hobby and he never thought of publishing any of it. But in the 1930s he wrote The Hobbit for his children, straight out of Middle Earth, and the rest is history. There's so many KZbin channels these days that can help you break the Legendairum down but my favorites are TheGirlNextGondor, Tolkien Untangled, and the Red Book. Start with the trilogy and if you fall for it you can just keep falling.❤❤❤

Gandalf is not a man, he’s a Maiar, which is kinda like an angel. The Balrog he fights in the mines is ALSO a Maiar, but one that was corrupted by evil. So that fight is basically an angel against a demon. And that’s why Gandalf fears the Balrog: they are equals.

The Two Towers is my favorite movie of all time. And that's saying a lot considering how incredible Fellowship and King are. The story telling, the emotional depth, the pacing, heroic battle scenes, it's flawless filmmaking. One thing that the movies do better than the books is the strong relationships between the characters. Samwise is Tolkien's favorite character, by the way. It's not too hard to see why.
