Frodo was essentially dead inside after all he went through. He was in pain from his wound and traumatized from his experience. One of the most underrated moments is when Frodo boards the ships and looks back at his friends. We haven't seen him smile like that since the beginning of the series... He's finally at peace.
@clindholm9396 Жыл бұрын
Beautifully stated! A lot of people don’t understand all that Frodo went through (though J is smart enough to realize it and remarks on it throughout his reaction). His battle continued even after he returned to the Shire.
@captbunnykiller1.0 Жыл бұрын
Tolkien took his own experience into account when writing about the state Frodo was in. As a war veteran he knew that the things you see and feel in an ongoing conflict remain with you all your life, and when you go home you do not wish to expose your family and friends to that trauma, so many do not talk about it and it keeps gnawing away on the inside, so veterans often feel worse when they get home, not better, especially when close ones smile and pretend everything is fine. When Frodo said "The Shire was saved but not for me." it was like admitting he is a remnant of the war, or rather the Ring, and both sides can only be at peace when he leaves.

I think if you listen to the background interviews by the actors...Elijah W. talks about how Sean A. was constantly watching out for him. Once Elijah lost his key and Sean told him not to worry...and had another key made before Elijah got home after working on the set. Elijah said that Sean was always looking out for all the other actors (who were playing the role as Hobbits...) which I find very sweet.

The 9 "Fellowship" actors all got the same tattoo (the Elvish word for "nine") to commemorate their friendship in making the movies. They were filmed back-to-back-to-back so the actors really bonded. "The dead do not suffer the living to pass." "You will suffer me." Fun Fact: The Lord Of The Rings trilogy became the most nominated film franchise in Academy Award history with thirty nominations, surpassing The Godfather trilogy (twenty-nine) and the Star Wars film franchise (twenty-one). "You fool. No man can kill me. Die now." "I am no man!" Fun Fact: To get enough extras for the Battle at the Black Gate, a few hundred members of the New Zealand Army were brought in. They apparently were so enthusiastic during the battle scenes that they kept breaking the wooden swords and spears they were given. Skull Path Fact: The final day of filming on the trilogy actually happened over a month after this movie was theatrically released, and three weeks after the 2004 Academy Awards. Sir Peter Jackson arranged to film one final shot of skulls on the floor in the tunnel of the Paths of the Dead, which was included in the Extended Edition DVD. He thought it was funny to be filming a movie that had already won the Best Picture Oscar. Music Enthusiast Fact: Billy Boyd's singing scene largely came about because co-writer Philippa Boyens went for a night out at a karaoke bar with the younger male cast members, and she was struck by the quality of his voice. Remembering that Denethor (John Noble) asks Pippin to sing him a song when Faramir (David Wenham) heads off to war, she resurrected the lyrics from the novel (where it is actually sung by all four hobbits), and Boyd came up with the tune for it. Pyromantic Ring Fact: In the scene when Denethor (John Noble) attempts to burn Faramir (David Wenham) on the pyre, the pyre could not truly be on fire, because Gandalf's (Sir Ian McKellen) horse would not go near it. To solve this, the crew reflected a real fire onto a pane of glass in front of the camera, so that it looks as though the pyre is burning. Real Arachnophobia Fact: For the scene when Frodo gets pierced by Shelob, Elijah Wood had two Alka-Seltzers hidden under his tongue, which he chewed up to create white foam, which he then leaked out of the corner of his mouth. Elijah Wood was wrapped in a latex-like material that represented Shelob's webbing. On the DVD, he jokes that it is like being encased in the world's largest condom.

The little girl that runs into Sam's arms at the end is the actor real-life daughter. His name is Sean Astin and his stepfather adopted him when he married his mom, and played Gomez Addams in the 60's TV show called The Addams Family, so he has had extensive work as an actor which is why he is so good. I always love to watch the “Sméagol” reaction from people upfront. There’s a reason. Frodo always calls him Sméagol, and Sam always calls him Gollum. The reason why Gandalf didn't send the Eagles to Mordor to destroy the ring is because the giant eagles cannot really hide for long from scouts and spies. Their presence is like waving a big red flag for anyone looking, or just listening to locals mentioning seeing giant eagles. If the eagles were carrying Sam and Frodo, it gets worse-because the One Ring will corrupt anyone and anything given time. Including the Eagles! But again, their presence pretty much warns Sauron of where the Ring is likely to be. Keep in mind Mordor has literally thousands and thousands of archers, as well as plenty of armed towers, coupled with the fell winged beasts upon which the Nazgul ride (and Nazgul remember can sense the Ring). So it seems extremely unlikely the Eagles would survive getting too close to Mordor. Even if they did, it tells Sauron where to concentrate his search. Anyways great reaction! hope u will react to the Hobbit trilogy as well.
@VPortho Жыл бұрын
If they attempted to carry the Ring via the eagles, they would've been spotted carrying the Ring, by Sauron at the latest. Neither can we dismiss the fact that the Eagles are not merely animals a wizard summons whenever he wants, Gandalf doesn't own them like pets, but like Shadowfax they are intelligent, sentient beings who have their own culture and make their own choices. They saved Gandalf on the tower, not because he ordered them to, but because he asked for help as a friend. Them popping up out of nowhere in the final battle was a decision made by their King, who seeing that the fight went bad, sent a troop to help the army. They went in knowing what was at stake and that they might not survive. These Eagles are heroes too.

Don't forget Denethor. It was truly touching when he achieved his lifelong dream. He set the world record for longest distance ever sprinted by a man fully engulfed in flames. Many have tried to equal his amazing run of 289 meters (316 yards), but none have ever come close. Most succumb to the searing flames and collapse in well under 100 meters. Many people, including his proud son Faramir, were there to bear witness and cheer him on in accomplishing this feat of sheer willpower and endurance.

One of my favorite behind the scenes stories involves the scene with Saruman. Peter Jackson (the director) was attempting to explain to Christopher Lee (Saruman) what sound Lee needed to make when his character is stabbed from behind. Lee informed Jackson that he is quite aware what sound someone makes when stabbed (they gasp, not yell). Lee was former S.A.S. during WWII. He was basically British Black Ops. He was correcting the director from PERSONAL experience.

@@JH-lo9ut Hopefully might get one soon - AFAIK the reason it hadn't happened before is that quite a big chunk of the records were still at the highest level of classification, to where even Sir Lee himself was not allowed to speak publicly about any of it. But, they'll likely be declassified sometime around 2030. It's a pity it took so long though.

Love seeing this trilogy through your eyes. I saw it in theaters back when we waited a year between each of the parts. The decisions made about what to leave out (re the books) were made without losing the essential heart of the story. Gandalf leaves because there is no longer a place for magic (people brought back to life!) in the world. Frodo leaves because the Ring left him in the shadow world between life and death, as it did with Bilbo. And in the afterword of the books, Sam eventually leaves too because his brief contact with the ring cursed him with long life, causing him to outlive his children. The elves send a boat to middle earth for Sam. And Arwen dies of a broken heart after outliving Aragorn by many years. They do have a son, though, who becomes a great leader.

Sam is a fabulously written and Sean Astin is perfectly cast. He's the perfect hero and the perfect friend. In fact, this entire film is filled to the brim with some awesome performances. There are so many fantastic moments in the book and film. When Sam and Frodo are at Mordor after destroying the ring, and they're talking about "the old days" and Rosie Cotton and when Frodo says, "I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam", and the audience/the reader thinks they are going to die (as do Sam and Frodo), it's sad, but just so beautiful. Their friendship is perfect. Oh, and "My friends, you bow to no-one". The battle scenes are just marvellous.

Arwen has the saddest story... she chooses love instead of being with her people... and at the end when Aragorn dies, not even her kids can console her... and she finally dies of a broken heart on the same hill she first met Aragorn. You would think that's enough suffering... but no... in LOTR elf and men don't even have the same heaven. Sooo... yeee😢 Also, Sam sees Frodo again, after his wife dies he embarked on the actual last ship. 😁

OMG your One Ring pimp talk was hysterical!! And i'm pretty sure darn close to what Tolkien envisioned to how the ring seduced its victims. "Most toxic relationship" indeed! PS: watching the ending with you got me into a sobbing mess. The first time y'all uploaded it, it hit me how much of an (accidental?) allegory this is for WW1. Now that my grandpa has passed and I read through some of this WW2 stuff, i can see how much of the sacred soldier brotherhood is depicted. And this time, i felt horror for the first time watching Gollum die, not even understanding he was dying, he was so consumed by his obsession for the ring. Totally makes me thing of substance addictions. Terrifying! (usually i just feel relief the ring has been destroyed). PPS: No you won't see something like this again. I think it's gonna be one of those things that will mean more and more to us viewers the older we get and the more experiences we all have. That's the coolest part for me. THANKS FOR WATCHING THIS!!

JRR Tolkien was the father of the fantasy genre. The Hobbit (first book) was published in 1937. The "sequel" to that is The Lord of the Rings trilogy which came out in 1954 & 1955. It set the gold standard for all to follow. Without Tolkien, there would be no Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, etc. Christopher Lee, the actor who played Saruman the White, was a life long scholar & expert of Tolkien's works & he read The Lord of the Rings books every year until his death in 2015 at the age of 93. He agreed with Tolkien when he stated that the hero of this epic story is Sam. Yes, the other characters were also heroes in their own right but it is Sam who is the true hero. He was not a wise wizard or a skilled warrior, but rather just a simple gardener who helped his friend on this epic quest. Even Frodo has said that if it wasn't for Sam, he would have failed his mission. By the way the actor who played Sam is Sean Astin, who has been acting since he was a young teen. His first film debut was at the age of 13, although he did some TV movies/shows before that. Both of his parents were famous actors too. You should check out his film "RUDY" and his role in the Netflix series "Stranger Things." Also, the actor who plays Gollum & Smeagol is Andy Serkis. The director, Peter Jackson, came back 10 years later & filmed the Hobbit film trilogy. Many folks didn't care for it because he stretched one book into 3 movies, but I still think they were very good. Maybe not as great as this film series, but it is still enjoyable to watch & you get to see Bilbo's adventures which took place about 60 years before Frodo & Sam left The Shire. It is the story of how he became friends with the Dwarves & helped them on their quest, during which he finds Sauron's ring. We get to meet a whole new cast of fun (& badass) characters & we see a few familiar faces too. Any reason to revisit Middle Earth is fine by me! I hope you will give that film series a watch soon.

The Beacons and the Ride of the Rohirrim are my absolute favourite shots in all of cinema, I watched this movie in the cinema and was goggle eyed at the idea of the Beacons, it was SO beautifully shot - and I've always been a fan of Rohan over Gondor, the ruggedness and dogged determination of the smaller nation always spoke more to me than the grand nation people and their charge at the lines of Mordor is the single most metal moment ever.

What really gets me is that when Frodo wakes up and Gandalf is there, it’s all beautiful lighting and he probably feels SO much better with the ring gone that he probably doesn’t even feel any of his injuries… that he probably thinks he is dead and Gandalf is greeting him in the afterlife. It probably doesn’t hit him that they lived until an obviously still injured Sam finally makes his way to the doorway.

At 1:08:26, you ask, "So how long did the whole trip take?" Realize that Peter Jackson & Co. speeded up the entire story to make more exciting movies, and the book, especially in the first few chapters, moves much more slowly than the movie (the Company spend over a month in Lothlorien, for example). Tolkien gives a detailed chronology of events in an Appendix following ROTK; in it, the Hobbits leave the Shire on September 26 and return on October 30 of the following year (1419 Shire Reckoning). However, the chronology of the movie and of the films is quite a bit different at the end, so they're not strictly comparable.

The eagles are an incredibly proud and intelligent race. If I remember correctly, they didnt want to get involved initially. Also flying with them was not an option , as being in proximity of the ring would have corrupted them as well. Truly, only a hobbit (or two) stood a chance to make the journey with the ring. They are more pure of heart and simple in wants than any other race, and thus typically harder to corrupt.

The context not shown in the movies is that Denethor was basically driven mad by Sauron. He had a Palantír (Like Saruman used to communicate with Sauron) and Sauron gave him visions of the fall of Gondor. Also the reason Gandalf left was because his whole purpose for being in Middle Earth was to defend against Sauron. Frodo left because his wounds from The Witch King and Shelob never fully healed, in Valinor (which is basically heaven on earth) he can live there in peace and free from the pain. It’s a special exception afforded to Frodo and Bilbo for their part in destroying the ring, it’s only Maiar (like the Wizards) and some Elves who are allowed to enter.
