As someone very interested in getting into the hobby, I just wanna say thanks for this. It is overwhelming watching some creators do their thing with what is maybe 1000's of dollars worth of tools, e,quipment and paint. Watching someone with only a spray can, three ,colours and some brushes makes me feel more like it is something I can get into without much investment.
@WatchItPaintIt Жыл бұрын
You really only need 7-10 colors, 1 can of primer and some cheap plastic brushes (like ModPodge). For years I painted next to a window as my light source, a piece of cardboard as my "cutting mat".

you should look up the blackstone fortress series by midwinterminis, he has tutorials for painting an entire board game with only 14 paints

Bruh you can paint your shit with actual craft paint. You don't need more than that, and a variety pack of Walmart brushes, that's it.

@Dorvuzak Uzn Yup. I have old dollar store brushes (when they had the good quality ones way back in the day), and they do the job just fine. I know I will never paint at a higher skill level than I have, so why be pretentious using expensive stuff that I will never get the quality out of? I will never win a painting competition of any kind, and I am at peace with that.

So you had two rattle cans of black and white, if you were really desperate for tones you could try spraying enough to form a puddle. Though probably not enough to paint the base black.

As someone new to the hobby I really appreciate what you talk about when it comes to paints and what their purposes are. Not many other folks talk about shading and shadows and layers and why they are adding colors to specific places on the mini for depth or contrast with such enthusiasm. These turned out fantastic and honestly this makes me want to see what I can do with just my AoS paint pack. You kept saying they were alright but they are way better than what I can do hah!

I got into 40k last year and I was already a painter on canvas so it was pretty easy to make the change to a miniature but the best advice I ever got is use a color wheel it will help any new painters the variations of colors you can make without having to buy each one individually
@ThomasGallinari Жыл бұрын
The best videos about miniature painting are these with a limited palette challenge, because it allows to get out of the classic color combinations and shade with black highlight with white. The result is always more colorful, creative, and SUPER coherent.

Necrons can be pretty easy to do with minimal paints. Prime them with black, drybrush everywhere with your metallic, paint in the green glowy bits, then can paint part of the gun handle with the same black again. Could paint the sigils with the green glow paint and call it done there. My real color scheme for warriors and other basic infantry only uses just 2 or 3 more colors than the ones above.

Speaking of limited colours, how about trying out the Zorn palette? Its roughly what John Blanche used in a bunch of the old classic warhammer art (like the 3rd ed Black templar cover). Its only 4 paints: four paints : black, white, yellow ochre and vermillion red, and stretches out to a lot of colours, so could be interesting?

Admittedly, I played in my first kill team tournament with Pathfinders I only used black (for both primer and base), red (for the armor), and gray (for details. They were not amazing, but they were my first models and it got the job done. Truly all you need to get the minis on the board! I’ve since added nuln oil, some blue lens paint and some gold for the gun bolts. It’s been fun to see them really come to life with each pass.

The hardest paintjob I've ever done was my undead bloodbowl team - I decided to do them in greyscale, like old Hammer Hooror movies, but with no drybrushing. I didn't use any out of the bottle greys, as many have blues, greens etc in them. So it was the wet pallet, a bottle of black, a bottle of white, a notepad and teseract glow to be a spot colour on the eyes. Took sooooo long.

How were those rustoleum paint+primer cans as primers? I would love to be able to use them instead of my existing rattlecan primers
@jothewerewolf Жыл бұрын
Every now and then they run Speedpaint drafts at my flgs. You get a "booster pack" with five pots and an unpainted mini, and you draft like in Magic (pick one, pass to the left) until you end up with five pots and a mini. Then you've got two hours using only the drafted paints to paint the drafted figure, at the end everyone votes for their favorite opponent, and the painter with the most votes wins one drafted paint pot from each other participant. One guy ended up with a poxwalker and only technical and basing pots, and I think that's the most handsome poxwalker I've ever seen.
@foreverfornever1124 Жыл бұрын
I find rustoleum cans to be very effective to prime bases. Thats also where a lot of primer tends to go in the hobby so getting cans for dirt cheap is the way to go. I use the vallejo spray cans for my models. I bit pricey but better than GW or army painter prices. And the results are similar to better than the other two brands when it comes to a smooth finish

There's easier ways to get a model done to tabletop standard with only 3 colors. Just do an OSL style model, light and dark. Say, your kasrkin are on a night mission, or inside a dark space Hulk or hive or whatever. Prime black, do a red or green or orange glow from one side of the model as if they're walking by emergency lighting or something. Then do some glazes or mild highlights on the dark side of the model to represent the moonlight or ambient light and give some contrast.
