[EP. 1] MAINE ARCTIC CHAR: Fishing for the Rare Blueback Trout of the North Maine Woods

Unknown to a lot of people, the North Maine Woods house habitat for a very special fish species found nowhere else in the lower 48: Salvelinus alpinus, the Arctic char, also known locally as the blueback trout. From the first time I laid eyes on a picture of one of these unique fish when I was eight years old, it has been one of the pinnacle targets in my lifetime. Over the past two years, I have had the incredible opportunity to target them in some of the most breathtaking areas I have ever seen. This is Ghost of the North, episode 1.

Many years ago I fished a pond in maine that I randomly picked from the Maine Gazetteer(a must have map in maine ). I hiked about 4 miles with my float tube. When I arrived at the pond there was a full on dock with several boats tied up and some camps on the far side of the pond, so much for my remote.pond experience. I only caught a couple of small trout. At the time i just thought they were oddly colored brookies but later realized they were bluebacks. I've never seen another one but I'm thankful for haveing caught one.

You turn the canoe sideways as its in the water pull it up to the bank and get in that way. Its a lot easier on persons and canoe. Thats how we do it when there. How did you not see the trail right off?

This pond is well known amongst locals as a trophy char fishery. It sees few anglers in any given year due to how difficult it is to reach. The state intentionally has more liberal regulations on this body of water to encourage some harvest. Keeping forage abundant and growth rates high. Keeping char is not something that should be done lightly. But in this instance, it was the right thing to do.

It’s definitely interesting how it varies from pond to pond. Some of the other char ponds I’ve fished, biologists have told me to keep as many as I want because there’s too many small ones. I still try to release 100% of the fish I catch, just because there are plenty of brook trout, but I’m definitely modifying my gear to be fish safer next time I go. Single barbless most likely. I usually use barbless trebles but they still seem to mess fish up unfortunately

That’s awesome! Char are truly a special fish. I highly recommend making the trip. I’ve dreamt of catching one for years and years now and always said when I get a dog I’m naming it char and she’ll be there when I catch my first char. She’s an awesome hunting and fishing partner that never complains😂 we just finished a three day trip for lakers but went home empty handed but still an awesome time.

I live in Maine and care a great deal about the conservation of such a rare and native fish, crazy to me that you would post you’re self going into a remote pond with native fish species and throwing a trouble hook with barbs. You killed a char doing so. Very disrespectful. Not even your canoes to use to be honest as well. Just crazy how oblivious both of you are to this.
