EP 1 | Northern Terminus To Morehead | Sheltowee Trace Trail Thru Hike 2023

The Sheltowee Trace Trail is 343 miles: climbing between deep hemlock gorges and piney, craggy summits, that spans the Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee. The name "Sheltowee" honors the history of Daniel Boone, who was captured by Shawnee Indians while making salt in an area close to the present-day trail. Chief Blackfish, his adopted Shawnee father, renamed him Sheltowee, which meant "Big Turtle."

Thank you! They are the “Oakley Hstn Low Bridge Fit Round Sunglasses”. They work great for hiking. Lense isn’t too dark and they fold fairly flat to put away in the shoulder pocket.

Enjoy 👍. If it’s your first thru hike beware the FarOut guide is terrible! Several spots I had to use other means for navigation - lots of times the trail doesn’t match up to the GPS track in FarOut. This all results in mileage being WAY off! Somedays I hiked 5 miles more than what FarOut shows - over a 3-5 section this can really impact food planning. Knowing how to read a Topo Map for this trail has been a real saver 👍

Oh so do I understand this right? You actually start 15 Miles before Morehead? For some reason I thought the trail started in Moorhead

The trail starts 26 miles north of Morehead. The northern section is known to be extremely dry - average water carries of 3-5 litres at a time.
