I am a Search and Rescue member and I can confirm that you can find yourself in a wilderness survival situation easily. If you are hiking in the woods depending on where you are it is very easy to lose the trail, or get hurt, etc. So honestly carrying little things that make your chances of survival better is not a bad thing. Obviously if you don't ever go into the forest it would be silly to carry around that kind of stuff constantly, but if you camp or hike a lot it isn't a bad thing.

I am more impressed every single time I watch these videos. I love it Mike, you're incredible. You remind me of my grandfather who was a Vietnam Vet survivalist. You have the same "in your face" truth about staying alive that he did and it's so refreshing to hear that bluntness.

"God, I wound up in the middle of the Amazon with only an altoids tin". I laughed my ass off, and replayed that moment several times! This perfectly sums up non-sense, hypothetical survival situations and bullshit.

That was very funny and so true ! I Think the best one is INCH bag videos showing a bag of gear and how they are going to live 6 months or 6 years in the wilderness and barely even mention what they are going to live on (eat). one guy even went to try out his INCH bag first day pulled out pancake mix, wow that is really testing things out . Looking forward to your next installment . Rob in Scotland

I love your straight forward approach. I drive truck for a living, I leave the low desert of Phoenix, drive up to the seven thousand foot city of Flagstaff, and head east into the high deserts of New Mexico over to Albuquerque. On a regular basis I go through 110+ degree weather of the low desert, and in winter the snow storms of northern Arizona and New mexico. I am often in areas with no cell phone coverage and if I have something as simple as a flat tire I can enter into a survival situation. I am limited on how much I can carry in my truck. I always learn something valuable from each survival book and video I read. Trucking is king in Phoenix with as many trucks as people almost, and survival is a popular topic among us truckers. We have to put anti gel into our diesel fuel in the winter because it gets so cold the diesel gels and the truck stops running. When the engine stops running the heat stops with it. I, for one, appreciate every survival video you make it really does help out. Thank you.

We have a close family friend who is a trucker like you. He constantly is making runs all over the country, from stem to stern and top to bottom. He carries a pack in his truck in case anything happens because he never knows if he will be in the desert one day, or up in the mountains next, or crossing the cornfields of the midwest or down in the swamplands of Florida. His runs vary each time. Glad you are enjoying the videos and are keeping gear with you! Stay safe my friend, we appreciate what you do to keep our country running!

Thanks for watching and commenting, as always. Loyal fans like you make us want to continue making great videos! I just finally got tired of all the idiots they show on tv and YT who claim to be survival instructors.....when in reality they are nothing of the sort. I've been doing this all my life, not as a hobby but a way of life, and its time to set the snowflakes and libtards straight. Again, thanks for the support bro!

SchoolOf SelfReliance I don't pretend I'm an outdoorsman of any kind, having been born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I've never been into camping or hiking. And I don't expect to have to live in the bush any time soon. I know my limitations. Retired now and living in Florida my biggest concern is a hurricane and being able to get through that kind of natural disaster. So I took the time and money to put together a bug out/get home bag. My other concern is being able to defend myself so I became familiar with firearms and conceal carry at all times. I'm never going to be something I'm not but at least I have an awareness of being prepared to the extent I can. It's certainly better than nothing. I enjoyed this video and your no b.s. approach. Subbed.

I think you are right. Too many people watch all the Discovery, History and military channel shows and think that is how it will be in a real situation. Many years doing this myself, in the Smoky mountains, in the appalachians, in northwoods of Michigan, etc, and most of what I see on tv is utter BS.

agreed 110℅, I'm old now - infirm to an extent unable to go out in the woods but I've been going out in the woods since 1960 and mostly with my father. He would bring everything including the kitchen sink but we only used a little of what we always brought . ..... untill we ran into an unexpected problem that's when over prepping saved our lives or others . yes we practiced in the back yard with minimal supplies and that was great fun and educational but when we went out in the woods in the Chattahoochee National forest or the Blue Ridge Parkway mountains we prepared well. we just wanted to go out for a few days and relax away from it all but sometimes wound up on search and rescue or helping teach others who unfortunately got in trouble due to their ignorance which can be cured by a little bit of education and a smile.

Exactly, you never know when you may need the gear. Better to have it and not need it, than wish you had it. All these people who think they can just make a bow drill to start a fire when they are freezing or sit under a tree instead of building a shelter and will survival, are just plain wrong. Survival is hard work and requires calories and effort and determination. Thanks for watching and commenting

Day to day, my EDC survival kit is a keychain flashlight and a reasonable size Swiss Army knife because those have proven themselves useful many times. When I used to live out in Utah and would go hiking and camping in wilderness areas, I took the appropriate gear to not just survive, but to camp comfortably and be able to enjoy the surroundings as did the friends I'd go with. Speaking of which, having more than one person along who knows what they are doing greatly lessens the chances of ending up really screwed. I always kept a bag of gear in the car as well. The chances of needing it weren't huge, but driving the canyons to the ski areas always opened up the possibility of getting snowed in or having the way blocked by avalanche. If that happened, I had the items I'd need to not just survive, but wait it out in reasonable comfort.
@SchoolOfSelfReliance
@SchoolOfSelfReliance 7 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what we teach in our classes and what I've had to say in multiple videos, and the comment sections, to carry a bag in your vehicle because you never know what circumstance you are going to encounter. I've been caught in bad blizzards, tornados, and other foul weather before, just while driving. Been through many hurricanes. And now with these Libtards out there blocking roads, assaulting people, and growing more violent each day, you never know what you might encounter just driving home from work, or taking the kids to their baseball practice. Much better to have gear and not need it, than wish you had it! Thanks for watching!

DIY orthodics. Also...how about some kind of cart for extra water...maybe luggage on kids bicycle tires or something if not for the guys...at least for some lady or something. Something for jock itch. I once ran out of water...I put a smooth stone in my mouth. My brain still knew I needed water but it cut my problem in half from wanting to swallow my tounge. What to do if one is in warm winter conditions and sweating like a pig then the temp drops 20 degrees....miles from anything and its getting dark fast. Should we melt snow before drinking or boil it. Anything for sore ass treatment. Foot exercises after hiking or treatment. Are zippo hand warmers worth carrying. Are zippo lighters better than bic or the other cheap lighters. Is a first night sleeping pill worth it.. I dont know if this was what you wanted...but I did my best.

Haha.... well said and about time that it is said. I don't mind bush crafting vids as they do a great job of getting people interested in the outdoors and outdoor living... and any endeavor that encourages that goal is admirable. However, it is all too routine how many of us fail to make basic preparations and precautions.

I think what is missing here is many people think comfortable camping = survival gear lol. My ideal survival pack = a .22 survival rifle with 100 rounds - a couple reliable fire starters (Yes including a bic lighter) - a tarp - bed roll - a decent knife - minimum food and water for almost two days. After that - a willingness to eat things you might come up with in early morning hunts O_O and find water.I could carry that in one pack. Hopefully before you got lost or stranded where you went - having an idea where a river or creek was would help find water and lead you south to civilization. (My deeper woods scenario) Now if I thought about less time being stranded on a road, my trunk would be loaded and I could take what made sense for a 3-5 day walk out. Prolley only a bear or broken neck would prevent me. Gawd I don't like bears. lol New hunters - take note - it's easy to get turned around in big woods and have to spend a night in there if you don't leave a bread crumb trail :-)

My various kits (whether they be EDC, BOB or day-hiking) is situationally dependent. While in the rural high desert in which I live, my EDC needs to be a little more robust due to the harsh climate (both in winter and summer). Plus, it is a little more friendly to things like carrying fixed blade knives, etc. However, down in the cities such as LA,, where communism and police-state-ism rules, I must be much more cautious with what I carry, especially considering the fact that it is a very mild climate and there is access to tons of resources that I can simply take if a true emergency does arise.

I Would value your opinion on your logic of a 7 inch blade. not for arguing about it, but because i want to see what i may have overlooked great vids
@SchoolOfSelfReliance
@SchoolOfSelfReliance 7 жыл бұрын
No problem. My argument behind a 7-inch blade is that a big knife will do everything that a small knife will do plus what a big knife will do, but a small knife can only do what a small knife can do. 7-inches seems to me to be about the perfect length for a survival knife as it chops very very well and is still small enough to be controllable to some degree. 7-inch knives are generally strong enough to do most work and they give you a great deal of reach without being unwieldy. If you do have to stab (animal or human) then it is long enough to get exceptionally go penetration. If you find yourself in a hand-to-hand fight with a human or deadly animal, would you rather have a 7-inch knife or a 3-inch knife? LOL. A 5-inch or 6-inch knife for the most part don't have the cutting powder of 7-inch blade and are not blade forward balanced like the 7-inch. I can do most of the work with a 7-inch that I would get out of a larger knife or machete, and if I need a smaller knife, I don't believe in the 1-Tool Option. So I always carry a smaller companion knife like a Mora Army or an Esee 4, or a BK16. If we were in the jungle, I would carry a machete, as well as the 7-inch knife and the smaller companion knife. When I'm walking along and have to chop my way through briars or sticker bushes/branches, the thing that is closest to hand is the knife on my belt- a 7-inch blade keep my hand from being tore up while performing chopping tasks to get the bushes out of my way. When I need saplings for shelter building, my 7-inch blade generally takes them down in only a couple strikes and makes quick work out of limbing them. I know lots of guys who get good service our of 6-inch blades, but for an all-around survival knife, I have always found a 7-inch blade suits me best.

I do have an old indian made one I have used heavily cleaning fenceline and processing wood while camping over a 30 year period. 12 inch blade trumps 7 . And it splits firewood without batoning. It does it quite well. lol I also carry a mora and a SAK for small stuff.

Lofty Wiseman states survival tins/kits are designed for forces who do ''shoot and scoot'' missions or air crew with limited space and the like where you might have to drop your pack or crash/bail out but usually Army/Marines survival gear encompasses their whole skeleton webbing. Are these people so confident they are as skilled as specially trained armed forces? I know I'm not.

Good points. I think I'd like to know how to do things like batoning wood, even if doing so might not be my first choice. Ditto (maybe) for learning how to make fire with a bow drill, even though a few BIC lighters and a ferro rod would be my first choice. Far too few people have come up with a disaster scenario then analyzed their ability to survive it. And *WAY* too little content is devoted to urban and suburban survival!

Hello Self Reliance, I am very new to survival and outdoor, Bear Grylls is my biggest inspiration that got me to interest and start watching youtube to learn survival. I bought Bear Grylls knife, fire kit and sharpener also for start learning! I have a problem that my family is noble, they don't like me go into the forest if I can get injury, I have to sneak out and spend time in the forest and make excuse that I go do report and field marketing. So if I don't get myself into a survival situation how can I practice my skills without my parents knowing? Do you think Bear Grylls video is excellent teaching tips? And what else item do I need more?

First- what country are you in? I cannot recommend gear until I know where you are. Second- no, I do not think TV personalities are the examples to follow. Some of them (like Bear Grylls) do have real military SAS survival training (most do not though), but the majority of the "skills" they show on TV are just that- made for TV and are all for ratings and to make good entertainment. Not to learn from! There are far better instructors out there to learn from than those on the Discovery channel. And the Bear Grylls line of equipment is cheap. It was mass-produced for Wal-Mart and then he "endorsed it" by letting them put his name and photo on it so he gets a percentage of sales (a paycheck). He did not design the gear and he doesn't actually use the gear himself because it is cheaply made gear. Third- Get a good survival book to start with. Buy a SAS or US Military Survival handbook to start with. Then you can build from there. Fourth- how old are you? Get back to me with your answers, and then I can better answer you regarding gear you should buy to have a good survival backpack.

Ok so Jungle environment- you have many natural threats as far as venomous serpents and insects, large predators, etc. A Becker BK 2 or 7 would be a good knife. A good smaller knife would be a Becker BK 1, a machete would be very useful (Ontario US Military 1941 Machete with sheath is great). The US Military machete is very affordable by comparison to other machetes and is made very very well, I use one myself. It will far outlast the Bear Grylls Parang, but Ontario makes good Parangs and Kukris too. Gear listed on my website for a Bug Out Bag is a good start: www.schoolofselfreliance.wix.com/schoolofselfreliance Yes, Third Edition of SAS handbook by Lofty Wiseman is excellent. Ok, 22 is good, thought maybe you were younger (teenager) when you mentioned your parents. You should talk with them about your desire to practice skills and always let someone know where you are going and for how long, that way if you have an accident and don't come home on time, they will know where and when to look for you and help you. Some of the other gear I think you would need over there is a canteen, cup, and cover. I would suggest in your area a Sawyer Water Filter, not an immediate need, but something that would be nice to eventually purchase. I will get back to you with a better list a little later that is more for your climate. :)

Thank you very much I will start searching and think of what I will buy first. There are many cobras, kraits, saw scale viper and pit vipers here actually my parents gave me one spitting cobra as pet too, very lazy animal sleeping all day but cannot touch. Yes I think water filter would be nice, I just learned making water filter from bottle, cloth, sand, charcoal, and stones in many sizes.

I'm a deer culler and all I need is my rifle hunting knife gas cooker steel and flint a survival blanket as well as a sleeping bag that comes with a rain cover when I take food and water I take 7 litres and 2 days worth of food because small and large game are everywhere in fiord land warm gear and extra clothes a emergency transmitter and a few possum traps by the way possums in newzealand have worth for fur and all these items will be with me for a whole 2 -7 months there are some old huts but I do take a tarpolan and the wild I go into is only accessible by helicopter

Exactly, you have normal gear with you. You aren't running around with just a knife and a piece of rope. You'd be surprised how many people go hunting and do not think to bring the gear you just listed with them. They usually only have a knife, a piece of rope (usually in the form of a tactical bracelet) and maybe a small altoids tin survival kit. They do not have gear to help them should they get lost in the woods or have an accident and have to be rescued. Thanks for watching!

Well, it's obvious in this video that you're out in the wilderness. I definitely saw a mountain lion pass behind you & it was probably planning on slipping up on you from behind for the attack. I'm just glad the video ended before I had to see the brutal outcome...LOL. In all seriousness, listening to you "descriptively rant" is like listening to myself. I've been saying the exact same thing about the KZbin "survival type" nonsense for years. I'm glad I found your videos & glad to see that you don't care to disagree with the nonsense of the KZbin masses.

Yea that mountain lion is vicious. He's the mouser on the property, runs feral but isn't afraid of humans. A lot of people don't like me telling the truth or calling it like I see it. They think I have an attitude when I am just a man speaking with a voice of authority, something most of them haven't heard in years because everyone is now politically correct and doesn't want to offend. I don't care if I offend, when I'm right and trying to teach people what is right. Thanks for watching and commenting.

SchoolOf SelfReliance I think it's more of not wanting to offend the knife & outdoor gear manufacturer's sponsorship along with offending subscriber sponsorship. And, God forbid if you question their "incessant need to baton wood just to build a fire". That instantly makes you a "hater" who "don't know a thing about survival skills". And honestly, one doesn't need a lot of survival skills when there "going to the wilderness" less than 25 miles from home then 5 miles off the paved road & finally 100 yards of the dirt road & down to a camp site. Like the old man told the Karate kid, "best way to avoid punch is to not be there". Well, best way to avoid a survival situation is to not put yourself in one! That's my first and best survival "tactic"

Come on Mike,, you're busting some folks dreams and imagination..some peoples lives are so monotonous that these videos are their only escape from reality. Who didn't grow up with Daniel Boone, Jeremiah Johnson or the present dual survivalists of Cody Lundin,,Dave Canterbury or Matt Graham and say to themselves "I could do that !" ..and head to their local sporting goods store and stock up on all the survival gear to tackle the Apocalypse.. But I agree, some will be disappointed, some will be injured and some may die from trying to do something far beyond their skillset,,,but at that moment ' they lived '...I refer this as playing survivalist or playing bushcraft,,,in most cases nobody gets seriously hurt ,, and some actually learn what their limits really are..Many are using long distance hiking as their dream goal and are influenced through videos that they have to break the bank and get crazy expensive gear to accomplish the task (not realizing that they will probably be no more than 2-3 days from the next town). It's healthy to challenge one's self,,try new things,,and push boundaries...I also see from your series that it is difficult to watch people take unsafe risks,,use tools and equipment ,not only improperly but flat out dangerously wrong,, but that's called experience and learning.Many will waste a great amount of money to gain the experience and learn the "how to " and " why " of their dream. I think we all need to escape the 'reality of today's struggles 'somehow,,and in today's times ,,sometimes all we have is "Imagination".....Thank You for sharing your videos and skills !!....Stay safe and God Bless....
