Came here expecting great guitar talk. Did NOT expect such an open, honest, warm, conversation filled with gratitude. Hearing him talk about how he misses Scott and regrets that it ended poorly and that he is sad that Scott has missed out on so much, was really touching. We appreciate you, Dean.

I really do believe that Dean, Robert and Eric sincerely loved Scott, but there's only so much you can do for a person who is an addict. You can scream and cry until you're blue in the face trying to help the addict but truly nothing will change until the addict wants to change for themselves.

Dean DeLeo is my undisputed favorite 90s guitarist. I cut my teeth in the 70s on guitar in Detroit, but appreciating DeLeo's playing revitalized me. DeLeo is the reason I'm not a relic stuck in the 70s. (--- internet went down in Sarasota T-storm; couldn't join chat 😔 terrible luck) Thank you, Dean! I came close to missing the boat 🎸🔈🔉🔊

mine too...any style he played he made his own. he and his brother are monsters of melody...I remember waiting for the next single to hit the radio when they were on that run of plush, dancing days cover, Vaseline, big empty, interstate, trippin on a hole, big bang baby, lady picture show, down, sour girl, days of the week....I know I left some out like sex type thing etc, but I already went overboard lolll...I just love the band ...what a run of singles...to me they had the best catalog of any 90s band

Hearing Dean talk about jazz chords being the blueprint of their music couldn’t be more true. I asked Dean at an STP meet and great at HMV back in the late 90s/early 2000s when I was a teenager. I asked him what he listened to and how he came up with his chord progressions. He said the exact same thing to me that he said in this interview. He listened to jazz guitarists like Tal Farlow and that Robert was responsible for the progressions in their songs.

Been into STP since the drop. 'Purple' is my favorite album of theirs. Dean is a very talented and creative player/writer but what I like most about him is that he's not a total gear head but instead seems to be focused more on the music/songs and emotional impact. What a novel concept, eh..? I love that David had to tell him several times about his own amp setups/what kind of pickups were in what guitar/etc and Dean was just like "Oh. Okay, cool." :) A man after my own heart. Great episode, guys!

(a venue called "Soma" in San Diego) When we got the call the were only going by "Stone Temple" and I remember the promoter telling us (because we were going to make fliers) he wasn't sure what their name was going to be. But right now their going by "Stone Temple" by the time the show came they were called Stone Temple Pilots and they were huge because their first single had blown up. @@tone-talk This is a really special one my brother! I may have told you that I became aware of STP when they played some early ‘Core’ era shows with my friends in The Flaming Lips when they were in the black leotards and Kiss make-up. They were very much against the grain of other alternative/neo-punk bands at the time and they got zero respect in the early days. But they were and are damn good. I saw the ‘No. 4’ tour with Scott and it tore me a new one. Robert is an incredible writer and killer bassist and backing vocalist as well with Kretz providing killer power drums and tasty grooves. What I find interesting and kind of ironic about Dean and Robert's musical partnership is that Dean credits Robert for a lot of the writing on on Core even tho he plays bass, apparently Robert is also a prolific riff maestro who showed Dean how to play the songs, particularly the hit single, Plush. I thought that was good on Dean for being so humble and giving where credit is due, b/c he respects Robert a lot, both as a brother and as a musician.

I was on board right from the beginning with STP. ALWAYS admired Dean’s playing. I knew he was different then the rest. Real interesting to hear him talk about the band after all these years.

So crazy. I flew home from Las Angeles today and I decided to put on the second STP record. It was the reissue with the live stuff on it. Great performance. I put on KZbin and see this interview. They wrote such amazing songs.

I worked w/Dean back-in 1988-89 briefly. He's a Great Person , Very down to earth kinda guy. I didn't know of Mighty Joe Young at that time but Coworkers had mentioned that He was a Great Guitarist. Hey Dean its Allen Pool from W.Cap San Diego ... Keep on Rocking Bro , I Love STP Great Music

That was an awesome chat! Thanks! Great stories from one of the great players, what a gentleman. I saw STP a couple times in the 90’s and they were killer (and still are)! Thanks for the great music, definitely part of my life’s soundtrack. Cheers!

Dean Deleo is a class act. Love STP. I remember when Core came out and people were comparing them to Pearl Jam and I remember being pissed about it. Core is one of the best albums of all time. I never thought they got the respect they deserve.

The fact that he’s mentioning modern music from Mitski, Tame Impala, and UMO as being terrific means Dean is still keeping up with the cutting edge of fantastic music. Dean really listens and takes inspiration to push himself which is what all of us should be doing. Here’s to many more years of making music!!
