That had to be the best and most simplest trunk pan video I've seen so far. I'm doing a '66 SS Impala and my trunk is GONE. The braces were completely rusted out. Your video will be a great help to my project.

Cool! I have a '65 Impala SS and need to do the same thing. Probably going to just buy the complete trunk pan with braces from Classic Industries.

Being watching your videos since you started your project and I'm amazed your going in a good pace and doing all the repairs that needs to be address are getting done and not cutting corners like the previous owner did in trunk.... You have to do it right even if it takes longer.. The end results will be well worth it.. Lucky me I only have to do half of the rear quarter panel replacement on my 70 chevelle Bottom halfs both sides and patch the lower fender both sides. Other then that my floors are solid, trunk is solid. Firewall is solid , around the rear and front windows rust free. You will finish way before me for sure. Lol Keep up the good work..

Sounds like you have a nice solid 70 chevelle. I appreciate your comments. I agree with you, no short cuts. I am trying to have it running by the end of this month, make sure it is mechanically sound then backing in the shop for paint and body.

@soolegarage
@soolegarage Жыл бұрын
@@thephantomzoneboxing the braces had some surface rust, but could be cleaned up so I sanded them, shot them with a weld through primer and reused them.

Excellent video! Do you have any videos on how to spatter paint the trunk? I always wondered how they do that.
@soolegarage
@soolegarage 3 ай бұрын
No videos but they actually have trunk paint in a rattle can that is designed to spatter for you. When you spray it the multi color spatter comes out on the material.

One question why did you cut out the pan it looked good?
@tonyb9787

Nice. I have a 66 impala and I'm replacing the trunk floors. I got them in 3 pieces. now I can cut it out and replace them. Do I have to use metal tubing to brace the trunk and brace the interior while I cut out the floors and replace them?

Did you put any metal prep or rust inhibitor on those structural supports prior to putting the new truck pan in?
@soolegarage
@soolegarage 4 жыл бұрын
I did clean and wire wheel all surface rust off, then sprayed with an Epoxy primer. I used weld through primer where I needed to spot weld the pan to the braces.
@jfarill834

I have had great success with Jason metal prep. It chemically bonds with metal so that it cannot rust again. It is paintable. A local energy provider in Florida turned me on to it. There is a very similar product called Ospho that does the same thing. When do we get to see the reveal of the Elegant Lady?

Awesome work! What product did you use to paint the bottom of the car as well as the firewall?
@soolegarage
@soolegarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. On the firewall and cowel I used a single stage paint, gloss black that I purchased from summit racing. On the underbody I used rattle can, VHT epoxy, satin black.

Just curious, why didn’t you weld around the wheel wells?
@chriskalkowski8086
@chriskalkowski8086 2 жыл бұрын
I noticed you didn’t weld right next to the wheel wells. Is that only seam sealed? Btw you have great videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
@soolegarage
@soolegarage 2 жыл бұрын
You are welcome and thanks for watching. The two pieces are spot welded together than seam sealer seals up the gap so no moisture can get in there.

Another question, what's the process on the drain plugs? Did you paint it and then put the plugs in?
@soolegarage
@soolegarage 2 жыл бұрын
First I primed the trunk pan with an epoxy primer then I put the plugs in using a seam sealer. Then I painted the trunk.

In case i don't have an air chisel, what would you recommend to get the spot welds out? Also, how did you get the strips started in the first place?
@soolegarage
@soolegarage 2 жыл бұрын
Instead of an air chisel you can drill out the spot welds bing carful not to drill through the brace below. Also some areas you can use a sharp chisel and hammer to slide between the pan and brace to peel it up. To start the strip removal I used my cut off wheel and cut through the trunk pan making sure not to cut to deep and damage the brace below. Then just start peeling it up.

How much do you think a shop would charge to do something like This
@soolegarage

Not sure but my guess would be between 2,000 and 3,000. most of the expense would be labor.
