I’m restoring a K5 Blazer and have been spending a lot of time getting gaps perfect on it. I went with new fenders too and had some minor fitment issues that I was able resolve like this. Also from the factory the door had a nasty a gap between the A pillar and widow frame. The center of that gap opened up wide and the ends were ok so there was no adjusting for it. I welded in rod and ground off any excess. So far it’s looking like it’s going to be a very straight with great gaps. Much better than what the factory did on trucks back then. I’m no pro but it’s nice to see some of what I’ve done the pros do.

I have done this for over 55 years, and a mentor taught me to build use the edges one spot at a time and to make shapable brass spoons to hold behind the edges to backup and help absorb the heat ... I learned to set up the whole car and then move from one area to the next to keep heat down and stop burn thru ... great work. This should help newbies get a great start on diy body work ...

Thank you for thinking of us home restoration guys. I cannot afford a TIG. I'm still watching your wheel house and quarter panel videos. I will need to adjust my door gaps and now have knowledge of what I'll need to do. I've been wondering which wheels and disk you have been using. THANK YOU!

Stumbled across this and glad I did. Thank you for sharing this. I’m trying to build up my skill level. And this really helps. Your explanation is excellent. I was working in a shop that did fake restoration work. It unfortunately was more concerned about time line . And I’d actually get in trouble for “ cutting out the good rust” , scolded for hammer and dolly work. And 1/2” of bondo was acceptable. I’ve seen actual inches used. I could go on and on . People need to research the shop before dropping off their dream. I quit working there for those reasons. But my old boss says you can’t see under the paint .

Wow, I’m a welder of 8 years and always wondered how to correctly fill/correct gaps on my 64’ impala. Thank you so much for this great idea. I wouldn’t have thought of tig filler rod. Did you use 1/8th rod? Thanks!

Nice job bro! Good to see actual restoration work and not mud daubers. People freak out when they see a rough estimate for restoration. "But I've got all new parts" lol yeah that's the problem sometimes. Most of the repro parts won't bolt up without mods much less actually fit, hours apon hours of labor to do what you just did and when finished it looks like you stripped the ecoat and bolted it on to the customer

You hit the nail on the head brother ! The aftermarket parts just get worse and worse. And people really don't realize how much work it takes to make it look like it hasn't been touched.....
