Loved your rant. Annoys me how so many youtubers constantly defend their actions to comments left by people quite likely not even subscribed, much less regular watchers. I knew, from several previous videos, that you made the planks tall to cut back later. Shame that everyone is an expert and feel they must critique the content. Constructive criticism is one thing, but if they don't know jack about your work or future plans, they should keep their opinions to themselves. You both are doing a fantastic job.

11:20ish Gemma I'm completely with you, lefties have to work harder or think a bit - one is easier. The pair of you have much more patience than I'll ever have and are doing very good work. Hammer on hammer is fine IMHO as I've been doing it for years with no issues, the force most apply doesn't approach that needed to cause failures unless using cheap imported tools which can be brittle. Painting the end grain is also fine stuff Dad did 30 years ago is still solid, once trimmed and epoxied it'll outlast most of us. Still stunned at how much crumbly timber you're still finding - good job it wasn't left a couple of years longer.

very true Gemma - i have met a lot of people who are way too bright for their boots but do not own any practical skills or common sense - in fact many years ago i did test my theory, one of my friends was helping (loosely speaking) i gave him a nut and bolt, he just looked at me, what you want doing, i just laughed, most people would play with it, put the nut on the bolt i watched a trainee engineer go through the entire tool box looking to see what tool he could use to remove a split pin that was all bent up, the answer is simple, just use side cutters, (wire cutters) great job guys, all coming on nicely

Love the feedback on your approach to painting. I was just thinking, "why is she painting the whole plank? They'll be cutting off the top in a bit". I guess the only reason you would paint it all (including the end grain) is if it will be exposed to the rain for too much time.

That punch is mild steel Simon, you can weld an arm onto it easily, I cant remember wether it was Acorn to Arabella or Tally Ho but the guys on there used a bigger version to drive the brass through the frames. Old carpenter here - - - done is good but if you wanna get picky - - . End grain is more susceptible to capillary action, where moisture wicks into the wood. That's how the tree gets a drink when it's growing. Species makes a difference. Example, red oak is so porous you can actually blow soap bubbles thru a short stick. White oak has capillary nodes that block the wicking action. Mahogany is even more resistant and of course Teak or Ipe are almost impervious which makes these types the preferred choice for exterior. If'n ya got a brush in your hand and it's handy, a dab on the end grain is a good thing.

Thinking way back when, we carpenters say, "they don't build them like they used to", that's a good thing because today given technology with modern day technique and fasteners, the structure is in more respects built better and stronger! I would think the same applies to boats. What a great reconstruction you both are doing on this wonderful salty old-school vessel. ⛴️
@TheCaptainbeefylog Жыл бұрын
Epoxy on the ends of those frames that stick up isn't neccessary, but I'd do it simply because I'm paranoid about such things lol. If hitting hammers together made them explode, then surely nails, punches, chisels etcetera would be blowing all day, everyday. It's an old wives tale and without foundation (unless there's something seriously wrong with the way the hammer was made). You could get a pizza tray and screw onto the crossbar on top of the bowsprit for a feeding post for Wonky. Seagulls are rats with wings, but I prefer them any day over pigeons and ibises. Audio went to mono from 15:59, came back at 21:47. Luckily you've been able to pick and choose alot of your wood to avoid knots and voids. Mahogany became scarce as the war progressed and they switched to larch in later models, which made them fairly leaky and hand softwood decking. I think a lot of the later refitting on Sarinda was approached with a "near enough" attitutde. Maybe not by the owners, but definitely by the yards. Keep of rolling. It's all coming together nicely.

The damaged screw problem is why we switched from Phillips or Pozidrive to Torx head screws at the last two companies I have worked at (one of them was making satellite antennas for military ships). Everything had to be 316 (made the mistake of using 304 once, had to replace several hundred screws because of that), and after a bit of time at sea, the screws would get a bit gunked up, and you always get a couple of Philips screws that would get stuck enough that you’d strip it trying to get it out. For Torx you need the right sized driver bits (we standardised so we only needed three sizes) but provided the right sized driver was used, we pretty much never stripped any Torx screws’ heads.

FYI: They make, or you could fashion your own, punches with handles that allow you to set nails without whacking your fingers...
@mikeskelly2356 Жыл бұрын
You can grind a slight 'cone' shape on the face of the punch so that it now has a shallow point on it. The point will keep the punch from sliding around and the small dimple it leaves on the copper nail head won't affect the holding power of the fastener. I used this method to set 20 penny nails without denting the surrounding wood. 🤔

I’m enjoying your work immensely, particularly the Captain Pugwash names that were sexual double entendres. Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy were great fun for a youngster in the late fifties and early sixties.! But I digress. The prime reason for this comment is for Gemma. I am English but living in Ireland with my Irish wife and three daughters. I have noticed that many of the Irish shops have a surplus of left handed hammers which would be a tremendous help for you, and would undoubtedly significantly increase your pace of work!

to me its refreshing to see you two making a go of this project and occasionally doing some things that are mildly risky, any common sense person knows you know what is safe or not, or wasteful or not, this is not a factory production boat. i follow several other brits on KZbin and have noticed that they are overwhelming in their excessive worrying about safety at all levels of doing something, and they will alter their way of doing something because of it, but for no good reason to do so. those folks must be highly stressed out.
