Suizan makes really good budget Japanese pull saws. There are many different variations of them, Ryoba, Dozuki, Kataba, etc that work best for different tasks. A Ryoba would be the Swiss Army knife of the Japanese Pull saws. Rip cut teeth on one side, crosscut on the other. Wonderful work as always!

Good decision to use the threaded rod Simon. The beam shelf is going to be the final determining factor for the shape of the hull from the deck down. I suspect it will be a beautiful crisp line because of the way you have built the beam shelf. I'm all in for stainless steel stanchion railing mounted on a curb with scuppers. I do believe the shape of the hull does not project upwards at the appropriate angle. The rail must tuck back in toward the center line. of the hull. I think if you go back to the original drawings, you will see that is the case. I love you guys! ♥

You need an oilstone and guide for those chisels! Hone them sharp at the right angle, and they glide nicely and cut easily and precisely. Once you get in practice, it's an occasional ten minute job that pays dividends!

Also, you can get saw setting pliers, that you can maintain saws with; which again, just makes life easier when you next pick up the tool.

First off, a big big thank you for lifting my spirits, with all the crap and negativity going on in this country, you two are a breath of fresh air 😀 I love your approach to every thing you do, literally the old bull dog, can do, spirit that is sadly lacking these days. I am in awe of your achievements so far, I have introduced several friends to your channel ( now all subscribed. 🎉) several of them women who are amazed at you Gemma, with your approach to what is generally classed as man's work, yet still maintaining your femininity, with your nails intact and hair in various styles. I liked it when you said basically do a job right or not at all, I always say, DINDDIT do it nice, don't do it twice! Simon always seems so chilled! Keep going guys, ignore the keyboard trolls, they will never achieve a fraction of what you two have achieved, we are all wishing you every success in your amazing adventure. Just a thought, I hope amazon don't deliver direct to Sarinda as ... You'd probably have to fish your parcels out of the mud! 🙄😂 Any way keep laughing and living, and best wishes to Amelia.

I have used oil on garden furniture and it was affected by algae, it was covered up when not in use and we discovered it going grey/green in patches where the covers were removed, I would say use a marine PU varnish, but probably best to ask an old school boat builder or owner as i expect there are issues with whatever

@philipreich7035 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I agree with a number of the comments made on the last video regarding the stanchions and bulwarks. I think you should make your bulwarks more vertical, and so should plan on making structural attachment plates for the stanchions level with the deck, and then attach the stanchions to those basically vertical to the deck -- then make your bulwarks to match. Having your bulwarks stick out beyond the deck wouldl make them very susceptible to damage when docking, going through locks, etc. Put a rub-rail at the level of the deck, and then have the bulwarks be inside the rub-rail and vertical to the deck. That way the rub-rail that's attached to the hull would take the forces from docks, tied up boats, lock walls, etc.... I also think your boat would look better with shorter bulwarks, and the stanchions that could come up higher, possibly with stainless wire rope across between them and possibly have a cap rail at the top if you wanted it. Or just forgo the cap rail and just have a heavier stainless wire rope at the top? Having a shorter bulwarks would also cut down on the effective windage your boat would have when cruising with the wind abeam or ahead. In inclement weather, you would be inside your pilot-house, so there's really not much need for a high bulwarks.... I think a lower vertical bulwarks would also be in keeping with the original design of the boat... I also want to say that I really appreciate the labor of love you are doing to save this vessel. Your candor, humor, grit and teamwork make this channel a pleasure to keep up with.... Cheers from Oregon, USA Philip

Stanchions - thick wall aluminium short tube welded to aluminium flat plate, bolted/ screwed to beam shelf, capped by timber on deck to add rigidity and hide welds. Stanchions slip into tubes, held in place with clamp or grub screws for easy removal, tubes nylon sleeved to reduce binding from corrosion . Dynema life lines. Just a thought for a problem that you’ve probably already overcome.

You definitely need to rethink the stanchions, they can't follow the same angle of the hull, they will stick out too much..your bullwalks need to be at a 90 degree angle from the deck. Therefore it will be better to worry about them after the new deck is in place

Sorry Gemma, I'm with Simon on epoxying the deck beams. But you don't need to do them before you install them. If you are thinking you could oil them after they are installed you could just as easily brush coat them with epoxy. The other thing to do is to overcoat the epoxy with a UV resistant varnish as well. You could always check with the guy's at Wests to see what they recommend.
@marklapierre5629 Жыл бұрын

Another fantastic video. I hope Emilia recovered quickly. Im still saying Epoxy. It will be so much less maintenance in the future, and i dont know how well oil will hold up to damp continuous conditions. Suizan seem to be quantity pull saws. They get great reviews online.
@tonygibbs4023 Жыл бұрын
epoxy is expensive but I think you should at least epoxy the ends of the beams where they they are more likely to need protection. They will look good if epoxied all over and varnished, oil is of course easier and cheaper.
