If Booker's is just hand selected barrels that would otherwise become Knob Creek, then store picked single barrel 120 proof Knob Creek is the way to go, I've seen them for $36.99 in an IL liquor store and I think $40 is regular price. Loved the musician analogy. It's absolutely true, some people are well pleased with two-bit ts-ts pop music, some people want very complex jazz or symphony and some people want a nice lyrical song that tells a story and has musical interest, is memorable and you can hum or whistle it.

Ok, One for Daniel. On my tours last week, whiskey producers would make a big deal about the mold on their rick house. They bragged about how that meant they had a health rick house because the angel's share would feed mold that would form on the outside of the building. I didn't think to ask then, but if you DIDN'T have mold growing on your rick house, how could you fix it? What would someone look to change?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Whisky fungus is a result of the angel share. It's the evaporation meeting the bacteria in the air and turning into mold. In theory, not having fungus would either mean that you have no angel share or that the air around the distillery is so dry that it's not allowing the mold to grow.
@TheBioethicist7 жыл бұрын

So I am a whiskey guy....mostly a bourbon lover in particular, but i appreciate all whiskey to varying degrees. Bookers is so not worth the premium over knob creek if you ask me as well. Plus Knob creek is my favorite bourbon so that may shade my opinion, but knob just has the perfect bourbon flavor to my palette. Although i do really dig on Basil Hayden as well it is the lower key smoother cousin to the knob and what i drink when i just want a mellow sip and not needing to contemplate the universe in my glass. Great stuff love all your content I am watching it in whatever order youtube gives it to me, but i am finding so many bottles i gotta try thanks to the whiskey tribe and whiskey vault.

Why is the ice sphere so popular with whiskey drinks? You see macallen advertising with an ice sphere. Wouldn't that just hide the flavor?

If you're using ice, the goal is to keep the ice from melting as long as possible so it chills the whisky but doesn't water it down. If you have on solid chunk of ice, it takes longer to melt. Plus it's fancy .... :-)

The Norway Navy had a similar issue with ruining a nice drink, but there were no birds involved. Instead, when a ship would come to dock, the Navy men would disembark and effectively drink the nearest bars dry, much to the chagrin of the locals. To account for this, the Norway Navy put barcodes on each ship, that way when a ship came to port, the local town could...Scandinavian.

Rex, I think I may have found one of the utimate mooch strategies that i think you might like. I organised for me and 10 other people to go to a whiskey bar here in Melbourne called Whiskey and Alement (wich is an awesome joint by the way) last weekend and do a whiskey tasting. Now most of the people that came aren't the biggest whiskey drinkers so i probably should have organised a beginners tasting or something along those lines. But instead i went straight for the throat and organised for us to do the the tasting called the Peat Lovers Paradise. You can probably guess what kind of whiskeys were included in this tasting. Most of folks with me couldnt handle the smokeyness of the whiskeys as expected so they gave all theire whiskey to me and i ended up with about 12 whiskeys in front of me including 3 glasses of Ardbeg Corryvreckan. So i ended up drinking a stupid amount of whiskey and i payed bugger all for it. Best night ever.

I am more of a bourbon fan than that of scotch, though i do love me some Oban 14, and lagavulin 16. Bookers is one that I do keep in my collection to see how complex bourbons can be. I wouldn't say it's one I would reach for to sit down and enjoy a glass of bourbon, but it is the one I use as a benchmark for how many layers of complexity are possible in bourbon. Is there another bourbon that you think is as complex as bookers to try? The closest thing i've found as far as multiple notes is my bottle of Jefferson's Ocean, though i do thoroughly enjoy that.

Bookers rocks. Overpriced? Yes. Impressive? Yes. Lacks Soul? Nah. It definitely moves me. Drink it when your sad and it will make you happy. Drink it when your happy and it will make you happier. Emotions. Also, if this is the Eric Johnson of whiskey, what is the SRV of whiskey? You guys are in Austin correct? ;) REPLY

When I go back to these before the escapades of Rex's hair.... he puts off a Commander Riker vibe in these early videos.

Greatest comparison using music ever. Coming from a guy who teaches music. Thank you for all these videos.

As a musician and whisk(e)y lover, I really got a lot from the Eric Johnson / B.B. King comparison. Definitely helps me put my whisk(e)y-drinking experiences in what I would call proper perspective: if it ain't got soul, let it go.

You suggested Booker's bourbon doesn't "move" you (being a scotch guy) I can accept that. I think it's quite good but a bit overpriced. What bourbon, if any, does move you?

You could have said Satriani, but no... Eric Johnson it is. I like Manhattan a lot, Mr Daniel.

Out of curiosity.. Do either of you partake in smoking? Perhaps something green?

Cigars for me.

Daniel Johnson, nah. We got some pretty crappy lung genetics in my family. Just a cigar every month or so.

you have good taste!

Mmk. I was wondering. I just recently started enjoying a cigar every once in a while. Any personal favorites I should check out?

yah, texas will be one of the last states to "go green", unless it becomes federally approved. and that won't happen in the near future.

I agree with the Booker's, I enjoyed it better with a little bit of water or ice

Dead on as far as Johnson vs BB, and the Knob Creek over the Bookers for the money.....So dead on I'll forgive you for preferring scotch. Would love to see you review the Knob Creek 2001 (any batch).

Definite dad joke, also newcomer to non standard whisky and from the superb Monkey Shoulder I went to the Highland Park 12 (£33 local in Chesterfield, Uk but £25 on amazon) and that blew me away with the fruity notes. Many thanks guys on all of your vids I've learnt so much and laughed along the way.
