Today we do a review and tasting of Booker's Bourbon and compare it to its close cousin, Knob Creek Single Barrel 120 Proof.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Hey guys, just became a bartender this summer so I have been watching a lot of alcoholic videos to just increase my knowledge. Fell upon the Vault a couple of months ago and have been bingeing every episode like its Angels Envy. Definitely the most informative and entertaining review of whisky I have seen so far. Keep it up.

This was my first premium bourbon 🥃. I found that it drinks like a great 90* proof. Very complex and has a lot alcohol on the front end but smooths out with plenty of vanilla and candy

If Booker's is just hand selected barrels that would otherwise become Knob Creek, then store picked single barrel 120 proof Knob Creek is the way to go, I've seen them for $36.99 in an IL liquor store and I think $40 is regular price. Loved the musician analogy. It's absolutely true, some people are well pleased with two-bit ts-ts pop music, some people want very complex jazz or symphony and some people want a nice lyrical song that tells a story and has musical interest, is memorable and you can hum or whistle it.

So I am a whiskey guy....mostly a bourbon lover in particular, but i appreciate all whiskey to varying degrees. Bookers is so not worth the premium over knob creek if you ask me as well. Plus Knob creek is my favorite bourbon so that may shade my opinion, but knob just has the perfect bourbon flavor to my palette. Although i do really dig on Basil Hayden as well it is the lower key smoother cousin to the knob and what i drink when i just want a mellow sip and not needing to contemplate the universe in my glass. Great stuff love all your content I am watching it in whatever order youtube gives it to me, but i am finding so many bottles i gotta try thanks to the whiskey tribe and whiskey vault.

I had Booker's last night and I agree with this review. I never water down whiskey, but if I ever drink this again it is going to be watered down. I appreciate the complexity, but it is not for me and the 200 mL I drank will likely be my last. would also like to thank you guys for the Monkey Shoulder recommendation. $27 for a bottle is the best deal for all of Scotch. My friend brought over a bottle of JW Blue and after the first glass I went back to Monkey Shoulder.

I know this comment is a few years late.... but hey better late than never. I truly agree with Daniel on this one. I am more of a bourbon fan than that of scotch, though i do love me some Oban 14, and lagavulin 16. Bookers is one that I do keep in my collection to see how complex bourbons can be. I wouldn't say it's one I would reach for to sit down and enjoy a glass of bourbon, but it is the one I use as a benchmark for how many layers of complexity are possible in bourbon. Is there another bourbon that you think is as complex as bookers to try? The closest thing i've found as far as multiple notes is my bottle of Jefferson's Ocean, though i do thoroughly enjoy that.

It is interesting to note that many remember their first experience with Booker's. So do I. The bottle continues to get more and more expensive. Sometimes, it's not about logic, but emotion, or something that stirs up a certain memory or feelings. It's hard to put a dollar value on that.

On another note, I have seen around that before Booker Noe died he produced a rye whiskey. It had a green label and I have heard that it was amazing. Hey guys! How are you? First of all, once again, great video ! I love how you honestly review these whiskys ! I myself am a whisky lover I have been watching every video on KZbin from you, ralfy, Horst and many more. I'have also been reading a lot about it on the Internet. So I'm starting to become knowledgable on the whisky world but sadly I have been limited in the amount on bottles I tasted for a couple of reasons. Here in Montreal, prices are high, in order to split the cost, my friends and I decided to create a "whisky group" called whisky and friends and I would appreciate greatly if you could help me/us chooses our next buys! I have made a list of bottles that I think are interesting because I read fairly good comments on them but I haven't tasted has much whiskys as you and that's why I ask for your help. We want to explore many many different things, I'm already a lagavulin lover but my friends are not full peat for the moment so I want to make help them discover this world with less peated malts! I don't think I can send you a picture of my list with the prices of Montreal here on KZbin, I understand that giving your email adress in the comments might not be something you want to do so if you have the time to answer and would be interested in helping my friends and I evolving in the whisky world I could give you my email adress and we could exchange a message or two :) Thanks for taking the time to read the comment and if you don't feel like it just tell me and I will understand and keep watching your amazing videos anyway! Hopefull to get your help, Julien!

Alright, we've seen you do some of Buffalo Trace distillery's more select barrels like Blanton's, Stagg Jr., Elmer T Lee, and E.H. Taylor. I would like to see how you think the original Buffalo Trace bourbon compares and stands up to their small batch releases. Or, for some good fun, let's try some Eagle Rare!

Rex, I think I may have found one of the utimate mooch strategies that i think you might like. I organised for me and 10 other people to go to a whiskey bar here in Melbourne called Whiskey and Alement (wich is an awesome joint by the way) last weekend and do a whiskey tasting. Now most of the people that came aren't the biggest whiskey drinkers so i probably should have organised a beginners tasting or something along those lines. But instead i went straight for the throat and organised for us to do the the tasting called the Peat Lovers Paradise. You can probably guess what kind of whiskeys were included in this tasting. Most of folks with me couldnt handle the smokeyness of the whiskeys as expected so they gave all theire whiskey to me and i ended up with about 12 whiskeys in front of me including 3 glasses of Ardbeg Corryvreckan. So i ended up drinking a stupid amount of whiskey and i payed bugger all for it. Best night ever.

That is a move of pure genius. All the credit of organizing a night out, and all the blame on taste goes to the bar.

Scuse me, if anybody does not mind to answer my question, I recently bought a bottle of 2015-02 batch, called everywhere „Dot’s Batch” but there’s no dog on the label of mine, the proof matches and it tastes probably how it should, but still I have some doubts whether I bought a fake bottle or not. Why there’s no Dot on my bottle?

The key to Booker’s is titrating with water to the sweet spot. I like Booker’s, but agree somewhat with the EJ vs BB analogy.

The Norway Navy had a similar issue with ruining a nice drink, but there were no birds involved. Instead, when a ship would come to dock, the Navy men would disembark and effectively drink the nearest bars dry, much to the chagrin of the locals. To account for this, the Norway Navy put barcodes on each ship, that way when a ship came to port, the local town could...Scandinavian.

Hey Daniel, The one video you did with Tom Fischer, you stated that Booker's was probably the smoothest high alcohol bourbon you've ever tasted....So essentially it can be smooth, but not preferred....sound about right brother?
@WhiskeyVault

That is exactly right. Far smoother than the George Stagg Jr, for example.

Hope someone answers this for me. My son bought me a Bookers with the label Old Ma and his Dog with a 2015-01. I still have it and unopened. My question is how much is it worth now? I've seen a price tag of $800 - $1700! Is that for real or not?

what an amazing bourbon Bookers is, i bought one many years ago when my palette was young found it too strong to drink with out additive, but now much older with a better palette for drinking straight alcohol . just the other day we bought some at a restaurant and found it to be the sweetest bourbon, scotch i have had the privilege of tasting, to me it was perfect, how long its been open and on the shelf for and how much that has influenced the flavour i dont know, but it wont be long to i go and get a bottle and try it to see if it is still sweet when first opened.

Daniel, As a long time Austin Guitar God groupie, I loved the Eric Johnson comparison. If the Booker's is the Eric Johnson of bourbon, what would you say is the Stevie Ray Vaughan? And reaching a bit here, what would you say is the Ian Moore of whiskey? Here's a toast to Steamboat on 6th and Antone's on the Drag. Gone but not forgetten.

Talking with some of my associates, the general consensus (sticking with Texas distillers) was that Stevie Ray would be Garrison Brothers Cowboy and after sharing Ian Moore with the carpetbaggers they concluded that Ian Moore would be Balcones Brimstone.

Ok, One for Daniel. On my tours last week, whiskey producers would make a big deal about the mold on their rick house. They bragged about how that meant they had a health rick house because the angel's share would feed mold that would form on the outside of the building. I didn't think to ask then, but if you DIDN'T have mold growing on your rick house, how could you fix it? What would someone look to change?
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 7 жыл бұрын
Whisky fungus is a result of the angel share. It's the evaporation meeting the bacteria in the air and turning into mold. In theory, not having fungus would either mean that you have no angel share or that the air around the distillery is so dry that it's not allowing the mold to grow.
@TheBioethicist
@TheBioethicist 7 жыл бұрын
So if you don't have mold, your solution is... move to a new climate?
