Today we do a review and tasting of Redbreast 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey and compare it to Jameson and Green Spot.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
austinwhiskyvau...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

What Dan said about it being widely available is balls on. The first time I had Redbreast was with an army buddy who had come into town. We went for a slice of pizza at Shakespeare's (Columbia Missouri) and while we were waiting we looked at the top shelf of the little bar, sitting right on the end was Redbreast. My buddy asked if I had ever had it? I hadn't. After a wee taste we bought the bottle! Easily my favorite whiskey... damn, it's good!

I've gotten a couple glencairns from distilleries and they tend to go for $10-12 a piece, which I think is fair. If you can make them for something close to that, I'd definitely pick a couple up (assuming I don't lift those 2 next week).

My dad, who's not a fan of whisky, told me about a whisky he had in his youth. It was called Mac Scot, it is no longer available. He and his friends called it ''nackskott'', which in swedish means ''neckshot''. Referring to execution by shot to the back of the head. It was the cheapest whisky available, and it was supposedly really bad. Do you have any whiskies you avoid at any cost?

We combined drank half the bottle tonight because we couldn’t get enough of the taste. I played a trick on her, I poored her a sip of Johnny walker platinum. She was like what happened? Lol. We learned we can’t drink the two at the same time. Red Breast is my new go to whiskey. Thanks guys

Glencairn glasses are generally around $8 online, and etching probably costs you virtually nothing (not counting the cost of the etcher. I'm assuming you invested in that for another purpose), but you obviously have a distinctive brand that's unique and worth something, so I could see paying between $10-$13 per glass. Maybe $11.99 each, or 2 for $20?

Question for you guys - you mentioned a few times how you guys enjoy more accessible whiskeys like Jameson and Monkey Shoulder. I picked up a Jameson (plain) and really enjoyed it, but clearly not as much as I enjoy my favourite Bourbons - like Wellers or Russels Reserve. It sounds like Jameson and Red Breast are a "grab a dram while watching Netflix on the average night" whiskeys. If so, are those your go to's, or what do Daniel and Rex reach for on the average night? Cheers guys.

Not sure if you saw my comment a few posts back but I have something to practice your blending skills. Recently had a friend over for an Irish whiskey tasting with Green Spot, Red Breast 12 and Connemara Single Malt. At the end I mixed them together and it was pretty amazing. Not sure of the exact proportions but believe it was around 1 to 1.

You may have to mess with the proportions bc the glasses were all different levels and I didn't measure before dumping them in one glass. But in theory it was prob close to about 1-1. You won't be disapointed. It's all the great things about Green Spot and Red Breast, but with a kick of peat from the Connemara.

This is one of those whiskies I had a deceptive first impression of at a restaurant, where it struck me as unimpressive. (I often find restaurant/bar experiences of whisky deceptive. Once I had a glass of Cutty Sark after an Oban and was alarmed at how much trouble I had differentiating between them.) Anyway, when I finally got around to buying a bottle and spending some time with it, I damn near fell in love. I'd say at the moment it's my favorite widely-available unpeated whiskey. ...And to Daniel- in your private tasting notes, do you record a whisky's color and flavor, or its colour and flavour?

Since Daniel mentioned he smokes cigars, I'm curious which ones are his favorites. The Arturo Fuente Hemingway line is pretty good, but for me it has to be the maduros. I prefer the Oliva Serie V line. (The Melanio and Melanio Maduro are excellent in my opinion.) One other is the Blanco Nine, by Blanco Cigars. (toro, robusto, double corona, the JT Limitado is really good.) The Nine goes really well with Flor de Cana 7 year old rum, from Nicaragua. Sad thing is it's almost impossible for me to find where I live.

If you like GreenSpot, check out Greenspot Chateau Louisville Barton, *finished in Bordeaux cask or in October there is a white wine cask Green spot being released. A Californian vineyard- unsure which vineyard... in the irish market- unsure about international release. Green spot for me is the quintessential Pot Still- vanilla, cinnamon, clove with a long smooth finish... the Bordeaux cask only heightens this will the introduction of fig, red grape and claret.

I am actually in the market for a Glencairn and have been looking at them on Amazon. I was thinking I would get a 2 pack for between 15 and 20 dollars. I think you will need to have a solo glass to sell due to shipping and your cost for the glass. I don't know what is feasible for your cost but I was thinking 9.99 for one plus shipping, or 19.99 for 2. That might be the problem here though, is your time to engrave, the cost of the glass and then factoring in profit. The question is would you make any profit for it to be worthwhile at those prices. 1 for 20 dollars is a stretch, but maybe that works for something where people want a piece of their favorite channel. My only thing is, I was actually considering the Norlan Whisky Glass that was kickstarted. Have you guys had any time with those? I didn't search the channel to see.

Just got a bottle of this and drinking a dram now. Very complex, like a scotch. I do kind of miss the coconut notes I get from Jameson, though. The sherry is light, but comes through nicely. Overall, I’d definitely buy again. Up to this point, my only Irish experience had been Jameson, so it’s interesting to see where else they can take the category.

I started on Rum and then moved to Scotch. It was tough to make that switch but then tried Bruichladdich Port Charlotte and I absolutely loved it. I found out that I apparently love sweetness (Rum in abundance there) and smoke (Islay). I'm hoping to try Redbreast now and see if I like that too. Trying to make my way into Irish Whiskey, then on to Japanese.

I'm trying to start a collection and I'm curious as to how long whiskey will stay good once opened. I don't plan on bottles being around for a long time but on the more expensive ones I don't want them going bad either. Thanks

If you drink a bottle in less than 3 months, you have nothing to worry about. A mostly full bottle will will last you years. half full at least a year. less than 1/4 and you have a few months before the evaporation becomes a problem.

Love the channel, can't wait for the other Redbreast reviews like their 21 and sherry cask finished. I would pay 7-10 for the glasses. Quick question, is there a whiskey out there that looks like dalmore 15, but tastes more like Redbreast?

Hey! Just found your channel, great stuff! Watched your 10 beginner whiskeys video, and went and bought myself some Caol Ila, couldn't be more happy of what I bought! I also got some Togouchi blended Japanese whiskey, and I'd really wish you'd try it, I thought that it wasn't really that good and I'd really like to hear your opinion. Keep up the awesomenessl ps. why the hell is every whiskey in Finland so goddamn expensive...

Just started enjoying bourbon and Redbreast 12 was my 4th purchase and it is smooth on the nose and smooth going down. BTW I purchased one of your Glencairn Magnificent Bastard glass. Love it!

I got a bottle of Redbreast 12 last night with my first bottle of Laphroaig and wow. There's too much to say about that. I'm down with peet/dirt/moss though so I'm good.

Have only tried Jamesons as far as Irish goes, but I think Irish is my favorite category. Watching this to make sure Redbreast or Greenspot is what I want for my birthday.

Can't be a single pot still whiskey without being made in Ireland? I believe Auchentoshan from the Lowland region of Scotland fits all the criteria of Irish Whiskey??? Ralfy has said Auchentoshan is an Irish Distillery in Scotland. Do you disagree?

Cookies and biscuits are objectively different things, something that a lot of people don't understand. Biscuit means cooked twice, cookie means cooked once. If a biscuit is only cooked once, it's a cookie. If a cookie is cooked twice, it's a biscuit. Nowadays, biscuits are hardly ever cooked twice, so most things you'll come across are actually cookies.

hell yes! i was wondering when you would get to it. I actually bought redbreast 12 a few weeks ago cause I remembered Daniel pouring it for the modern rogue people and i wanted to style an irish whiskey made the old style irish way. thats when I realized you never did video on it. and it hurt pouring my self a $60 whiskey so I bought normal jameson for every day. so this episode was basically a mirror of my nights after work. of course till the mooch mentioned green spot. as for the classes i would pay up to but not exceeding $8 per glass plus tax and shipping and handling. i would want set of 4 and not want to pay more than $40 if possible. $45 if i had to.

You learned me on the whisk(e)y. I'll try on the pricing of the glasses. Cost of glass + labor rate (divide your hourly rate for labor by the number of glasses an hour you can make) + profit margin (how much money you want to make) = total cost for consumer. Before anyone starts waving their arms about like an orangutan, please put your current glass down. Spilled whisk(e)y isn't fun. The final number is completely flexible based on how much they really want to make versus what they think people will pay. I don't see it as "hey I'm going to buy these to drink all my whisk(e)y" but more as "I want to support these guys and the channel".

Laser engraved glass pretty much sucks, it's fractured uneven sharp jagged yuk. when you're ready for top-shelf sand carve them. You start with laser tape and run it just like you did but finish it with a sandblaster. So that aside I'm new to Whiskey and have bought three so far. Dingel #4, Tullamore Dew special reserve, and Green Spot. Not crazy about the Dingel, Tullamore neat is not bad but there is a chemical smell and finish I'm not also not crazy about. My favorite is the Green spot with two ice cubes. Is it wrong? What should I try next, I want to grab Yellow spot except for the price, I already have a hundred dollar bottle I don't like.

Hey guys, I'm from Turkey and love the show, last day I was wondering if there was any turkish whiskey distilleries and I encountered, the only and the last, one called Ankara Viski owned by a Turkish tobacco and alcoholic beverage company named Tekel in 1963. The funny story behind is that when it was first produced in the capital, the board of the institution invited a well known and reputable whisky expert from Scotland. When the test was asked, he replied as “Very complex. Nice drink. But totally not a Whisky, let me ask which type of spirit is this?” Disappointment :(

How about $24.95 a pair. That seems to be close to the going rate online at other places. You'd most likely have to find a source for the glasses to make it doable. Just think ahead....you can also do your distillery name on some Glencairn glasses once you get it up and running.
