As a therapist I usually recommend my folks change their mindset from striving for perfection, because perfection is not attainable. I encourage them to strive for excellence which is possible. So although the old timer at the wood store had a good idea, I would recommend tweaking it just a bit. It seems to reduce the stress and self criticism people experience. I love your videos and find your thoughts on community and life in general very uplifting and relaxing. I will probably never refinish any piece of furniture myself, but I’ll keep watching you do it! Take care and be well.

Laurie, in my culture, we say that one cannot create perfection. Only the Creator can. Whether that be God, Mother Nature or something else is up to you. Master weavers and other artists purposely put in a “flaw” to assure their work isn’t “perfect.” I find that really comforting. I’m a Coast Salish Native in the Pacific NW. And yes, I always try to be perfect. Lol

I'm always frustrated as I'm never satisfied with what I produce (knitting, embroidery, sewing, painting, carving, creating things with whatever I find in nature, working with epoxy, etc...). I cannot forgive me any mistake. And as people appreciate what I make, well, I think they are telling lies. I should follow your advice, as a therapist, but I'm not able 😮 I'm not a rational person, emotions and sensations has been guiding me in my life. Anyway handicraft cannot and mustn't be perfect, that's the value a handmade object adquires.

What a wonderful restoration. Though Ward is easy to find, there is a reason they have been in production for almost 75 years, quality of construction. Someone was lucky to nab this at an auction for charity . I liked the nutmeg stain on the walnut veneer , it elevated the warmth of this piece.

Great job. I’m sure someone has mentioned, but when routing an outside edge, you should move the router counterclockwise and clockwise for an inside edge (like for a sink). Awesome job though!

I came to say this, the bit should always be spinning away from the material. So as Mike said, when the Router is between you and the work, move from left to right (never go back in the direction you have just made a pass on) when you get to a corner continue "around" it. When the material is in the middle, as in you, the material then the router Move right to left - Mike will correct me If I'm wrong, I just learnt this about a year ago so I'm a novice too

Beautiful as always Barry. Can't believe you knocked your camera over haha I think it's important not to skip over too much of what's involved in flipping/restoration. There's a lot of misconception that what we do is easy. Have seen a lot of people attempt these things as a hobby and throw in the towel when they realized it's more than just throwing a coat of paint on. Thank you for your transparency

You do not have to explain to anybody the kind of money you make on those pieces. You create wonderful pieces of real furniture, no plastic throw away junk, and you get paid for what your work is worth to people. If you make a million a month or 100, it is nobodys business. Try to buy quality furniture today and see what you pay for it. You make out of old quality furniture that some people didn't appreciate and made master pieces out of them, pieces you should be proud of. I am very proud of them and wish I had one special piece 😊. Good observation that 75% of the work is prep work. I find that holds true in much of life. At least in my life, any project - whether professional or personal - is heavy on the prep end. Prep work often isn't fun or exciting, but it's what makes bigger payoffs possible. Great comment with universal application.

Learned this from an old friend. Cans of paint or anything similar. Make small nail holes on the inside rim, excess will drip back in the can.

That is sensational! Looks like a entirely brand new piece. Your devotion is evident. Most people would've cleaned it and maybe slapped on a coat of paint and called it done. Thank you for showing all the steps including the prep. It is crucial. 🙂

Such a beautiful chest of drawers, that warm orange tone would fit perfectly in my Homeoffice ! Bad, that I live in Europe and not next to you! That change of the vernier was so nice, and you made it looking so easy, all others use heat and ironing and do not ask what else….I think that glue and that roller is enough! That routerbit seems a little bit dull or you move it in the wrong direction , never see so much overstand after the use of it.. but the result is that what count, and the result once again is a masterpiece of furniture that get touched from a master of craftsmanship! I like really what you do!

Thank you Alex. I don't remember this project specifically. What I do know is that I have learned to use the router counterclockwise. I continue to learn new things every day. Thank you for the support

@@MadCityModern hello Berry, I learned, Against the direction of the rotation is the correct way to use the router , in this direction the bit cut off the overstand of the wood! Maybe the router that you own is different from the one I know…

The reason the router reacted as it did is the direction you were going as the cutting tool (bit) is turning clockwise, you need to have the work piece on your left as you move forward. In other words, the blade will be turning in the opposite direction of the cut. I'm sorry if I'm not articulating this very well. Just make sure you move the router in the opposite direction you did in the video. There. That was better. I really appreciate you folks doing this work. You've taught me a lot.

@@MadCityModern I was going to comment about this same issue as well but I looked of anyone had done it yet. Not just for veneer but for any application always move the router counterclockwise.

Loved the hanging plant over the giraffe! LOL Very clever placement. Reminded me of a piece of mural art in Oakland CA, with giraffes painted up the pillars of an overpass, with Ivy growing down the sides where the giraffes were “eating” it. LOL

A piece of advice on the router...you want to account for the direct the blade is spinning. When trimming an outside edge go counter clockwise. Go clockwise if trimming inside an opening. You will get a much cleaner cut.
