[Ep. 173] Finding Safety In The Songs Of Tori Amos

Inspired by his lost love of online message boards, Luis put out a call for Tori Amos fans to come together and discuss how her music has impacted their lives.
They agree that the magic of Tori comes from both her as a person and her music:
· the music that navigates both ends of the spectrum, from anger and angst to beauty and dreamlike reverie, all within one song
· the lyrics that are both emotional and rebellious , often combining the sacred and profane in one line
· the way she brings rawness, authenticity, and the body to the piano
· the holistic expression of her self that she brings to the music

This is the medicine I needed this morning. Thank you! 🦌 My Tori story: I was a 9-year-old obsessed with Paula Abdul, Pat Benatar, and Sweet Sensation when I first heard Tori. My uncle gave my Mom a mixtape in the 90s-- I can still picture the faded writing on the tape sleeve-- and the first two songs on the tape were "Crucify" and "Winter." I LOVED both of those songs, especially "Winter." As a kid who felt the absence of my own father at home, I was fascinated by this intimate story about her father. I only knew those two Tori songs until high school, when I bought From the Choirgirl Hotel, fell in love, and dove into all of her music. Through high school and college I was a huge fan-- went to her concerts regularly, joined the message boards and made instant friends with other EWFs, and had two posters of her in my dorm room. But by The Beekeeper my soul was resonating more with Jill Scott, Beth Hart, Sara Bareilles, and music from the Caribbean, Brazil, and South Africa. I never got into American Doll Posse and kind of stopped following Tori's new music. I had been revisiting her earlier music recently, and when an algorithm led me to her incredible cover of Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools (Drank)" it made me rediscover her and check out her newer music for the first time. My favorite B-side: "Merman." It was the lullaby that soothed me as a young queer boy scared of his own sexuality and the cruelty of the world. The song resonating with me now: I just discovered Native Invaders and am shocked to find this spiritual connection I still carry with Tori's music. It's like reuniting with a family member after years apart-- we still know each other, and there's a connection in the body and soul that can't be undone. That entire album is what's carrying me right now, but if I had to pick one song "Up the Creek" feels urgent and necessary. Of the songs I know very well, "i i e e e" has to be the song that blows my mind every time. I also have to agree with exactly that moment in "Cornflake Girl" when she tears the piano apart!

Tori Amos got me through my freshman and sophomore years in college, sort of an emotional anchor in the depression and anxiety I was dealing with. I’m so glad I found this video… it’s time to revisit Tori Amos’ music!
