I assumed it was earth because it wouldn’t be interesting if it were some other random planet. If it were somewhere else it could be anywhere, at any time. That’s not the way you tell a story. “Something happened somewhere, some time. Now on with our story.”

Personally, with the context of Covenant, I think it would be much more fitting if it was Planet 4. The engineers used the black goo to create life, and then billions of years later, David would use the same substance again to tear it all down.

In Spaihts' script, the opening scene takes place on Earth and the rest of the film takes place on LV-426. In Lindelof's script, the circular ship is never shown and the alter on LV-223 has a saucer. In the commentary Lindelof talks about the opening scene taking place on Earth and depicting the seeding of life. In the final film, we do see the circular ship and the saucer is replaced with a green crystal. In interviews, Scott has said the opening scene could take place on Earth, but it doesn't have to. Who should be believed? What should we rely on? You may be right that the opening scene takes place on Earth. Or you may have been fooled by the conjurer's trick, the magician's slight of hand.

Where any theory of an alien host, who had brood us, came to our ancestors, to check on our growth and casually brief us on the universe, falls apart, is the question, why they did not gave us the recipe for soap and a lecture on basic hygiene? The opening could be any planet , the opening scene depicts Engineers is not necessarily any planet we speculate . Why would it be LV 223 when we obviously see a break down of the Engineers molecular structure. If it was LV 223 then that means the Engineers failed that planet because there is no fossils of life. Even if they destroyed the planet with black goo we would see fossilized bio similar to when a David smoked the human like species in Covenant. The opening scene is depicting that the creators of engineers, the guys in the UAP, drop off Engineers on planets with Deacons blood in a cup and they seed life. The Engineer is a perfect organism as well created by the guys in the cloaks and they use their perfect DNA with Deacons blood to create life.

@@koncise0363 This has been offered as one possible explanation for Prometheus’s plot that a lot of people find plausible. I think aspects of this explanation are interesting, but it seems to be mainly derived from a fake fan script that claimed to be an authentic Lindelof script. I don’t think the goo from the saucer in the opening scene is Deacon blood. I think its effects are a lot different from the black goo that we see being used by David in Prometheus and Covenant.

@TheFilmSymbologist Later in Prometheus the space jockey pulled up a 3D visualization of a planet and set course. It looked remarkably like a planet with a continent looking rather much like Africa. Could be not Earth with a similar shaped continent but probably not.

@ While David is deceptive at times, I believe him when he says the LV-223 engineers were planning to bring the black goo to Earth in the 1st Century AD. I’m less confident that the opening scene takes place on Earth. In fact, I think it’s more likely that the opening scene does not take place on Earth.

I've been having this problem since Prometheus came out and many fans (mostly angry fans) said this opening scene was Earth and these characters on screen were Engineers. It was NEVER said in ANY Scott movie that these are Engineers or anything else. People thought in Covenant that David and Shaw were landing on the Engineer planet but this was NEVER said in canon. They don't even look like the characters from Prometheus. Where in the canon is the word Engineers mentioned? It isn't. The head canon in the heads of most fans are moldy and decrepid. Canon is only ever canon when it's mentioned in a film. The films NEVER mention Engineers nor that they created life on Earth. Plenty of implication but no fact. I need fact, not implications. Like most fandoms the fans are pathetic insecure desperately seeking validation from fictional movies and not from real life. SMH at geek culture.

What are you talking about? In the first 10 minutes, Shaw says ‘we call them engineers. They engineered us” Then they go to the planet and test the dna from the exploding head, which is human for some reason. The scientists all seem to think this proves they made us

It's always Ridley Scott who's to blame isn't it? He stole your pocket money and he ruined your favourite ever movies by getting them made in the first place. He even conceals how bad he is by making dozens of hyper successful and influential films over decades and decades. He's the worst person of all time. And all you can do is tell people about it in comment sections for 13 years now. One day there will be no more Ridley Scott and others will be free to make unlimited Alien films that always have at least 1 predator and at least 1 pulse rifle - the way it should be.
