Episode 19 of the Book Lovers Series | Canon XA50 Footage: Bookstore Vlog - Lost City Books in Washington DC | I've come to realize that the Canon XA50 is the perfect DOCUMENTARY CAMERA for me. It has everything a SOLO FILMMAKER needs to make documentaries as a one-person crew. Here's some Canon XA50 footage shot with the XA50 of LOST CITY BOOKS in Washington, DC. Below are the reasons why I'm considering the Canon XA50 over a DSLR camera for documentary filmmaking.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE CANON XA50:
- Its small, compact size - very portable.
- Shoots 4K up to 30 FPS.
- All in one camera, the only thing you may need is a nice external mic hooking up to the XLR input, if you need pro audio. Otherwise, the onboard mic is pretty good for everyday filming non-pro events.
- Built-in ND filter (1/4, 1/16. 1/64)
- Built-in optical and electronic IS.
- Dual-pixel auto-focus.
- 2 XLR audio inputs (pro-audio)
- Great in low light settings (which surprises me).
- 15x zoom at 4K and 30x zoom at 1080p.
- Sweet bokeh / shallow depth-of-field (especially when you use the zoom): see 2:41.
- On-boar audio is decent for the time when you don't use the XLR inputs.
- Perfect for me as a run & gun documentary filmmaker - within budget.
WISH LIST:
- Image quality is nice but not as cinematic as I would like. But since it's for run & gun documentaries, this wish is not as urgent. Though I still wish.
- More physical buttons for often-used features, such as changing IRIS, GAIN, etc., would be perfect.

Hi Sarah, i enjoyed every single video that you upload. Great work dear!! I wonder, what settings do you use to get that great smooth and flat look in your videos? I`ve research a lot about pro camcorders and the XA50 is the best option for my needs. Hug from Chile.

Hi Cacoespejo! Thank you so much for watching my videos! I usually color grade in Premiere Pro and then add on a layer of FilmConvert look. I think the "smooth and flat look" you mentioned is achieved by reducing the highlight and shadow, and lower the contrast as well as add adding a bit of fade before color grading.

What were the settings you used to shoot this piece - did you do anything special in color correction?

I used Film Convert for color grading. :) Setting was mostly auto.

You are very right to love that camera. As for camcorders the sony of the same size does more slowmotion. but thats about it, even the canon beats it in low light a bit. The only other camera that size and price range is the ls300 from JVC but you gotta find a good lens for it. It is hands down the best video camera besides the canon c300 line that canon make. If you look you can find the handless version of the xa50 called the g60 i think, same sensor and lens, for even cheaper!

The man thinks long and hard and eventually says to the genie "Please make me irresistible to women". Theres a puff of smoke a flash of lighting and there lying on the sand is a credit card. He was irresistible to women. LOL
