Professor Barry Strauss and Dan talk about Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar and a host of historical luminaries in a tale worthy of Shakespeare as the Roman Republic goes down with the ships at Actium.Show Notes: 1. “The War That Made the Roman Empire: Antony, Cleopatra, and Octavian at Actium” by Barry Strauss 2. “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu 3. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History “Death Throes of the Republic”

I wake up in a house that's too small. Drive a car that's too old. But when Dan Carlin releases a new episode, everything is ok for awhile. I am a simple man, I want history and I want it hardcore.

Dan; Regarding Julius promoting Octavius as his heir over his son think about if Julius didn't think he would live another ten years then his son at 10.11 would need a regent and Roman culture probably wouldn't accept Cleopatra as either Empress nor regent. So if Cleopatra and their son returned to Egypt they would have a better survival chance as only Egyptian monarchs.. He probably didn't suspect Anthony would hook up with her.

Amazing episode, as always. I credit HBO’s brilliant “Rome” for being somewhat familiar with these events, despite any liberties they must have taken for drama’s sake. Shame that we didn’t see much of Actium (if at all, it’s been a while.) Now I need to go and rewatch that.
@carterghill
@carterghill 2 жыл бұрын
With the exception of the opening scene of Lucius Vorenus commanding his unit and pulling Titus Pullo back into the lines, Rome didn't have much action at all. I see it as the one weakness the show had, but I'm okay with the way they tastefully avoided showing it. The show was more about the characters and the politics than the action. Caesar's victory over Pompey was lackluster, I wish I could've seen it, but that would've taken away from one of my favorite moments, where Pompey gradually gives up on the facade of his fake identity and draws out the battlefield to Vorenus. He explained how the battle played out, how he was set up to win. "I didn't seem like we could lose! That's almost always a bad sign." He was happy to be in his element, talking about the old days in the army, showing his battle plans to a younger soldier, but ending it with "and that's how Caesar defeated the Great Pompey Magnus... That's how the Republic died." This goes for the Actium battle, but even more so imo. Maybe I don't feel the need to watch Naval battles as much, but I distinctly remember Antony's monologue at the end. How he was surprised that it wasn't so bad, water still tastes good... His reaction to the battle is more impactful than any violent montage could ever be imo. Fuck what a brilliant show.
@Boggsy.
@Boggsy. 2 жыл бұрын
@@carterghill Absolutely. Agree on all fronts. I was honestly never sore for want of action while watching the show itself. Only in hindsight (and in considering the contents of this particular podcast) do I wonder what they might have done for an engagement like Actium, had they a larger budget and more time. But, who knows... Plus, the show is one of the best TV has ever seen *as is*. As you say: Learning what failed him at Pharsalus from a completely weary & wary Pompey hits that much harder; where had they played the battle for spectacle, that beautiful character moment (and our imagining of the battle) might have been diminished. Also just now watching the scene where Cleopatra meets Octavian after Actium & Antony’s death, bluffing as well as she can, as she gets strong-armed into returning to Rome as a Triumph-parade-prop, then finally confronted with “Oh and bring the children, *all* of them”… Chilling scene. The dead intensity in Octavian’s eyes as he dresses up the terms of surrender in that thin veil of decorum is something else. Seriously brilliant.

Talking about ROME AGAIN! Yes! Just a side note... Octavian Caesar was "abroad" when Julius Caesar was murdered. He was in Appolonia now in the nation of Albania. I visited the city and ruins and it is breathtaking! I practically had the ruin site to myself, nearly nobody there! Compared to the terribly overcrowded ruins like Pompeii or the Roman Colosseum in Italy... go to ALBANIA! Amazing Roman sites, Buntrint and Durres, among others are incredible. Durres is where Julius Caesar lost the 2nd to last battle to Pompey's forces. Then he went to Buntrint to regroup and then went down to Greece for the final victorious battle before heading to Spain to mop up the rest of the Pompeian loyalists, like in Cordoba Spain where I have also been. A final thing about Albania... Some of the nicest most hospitable people I've encountered on Earth. A little rough around the edges because of a tough history in the last 100 years. But you will pay 1/10th of the cost as a tourist compared to going to Italy, Greece, Spain and 1/20th of the cost compared to visiting France or UK. Albania is AWESOME!
