Glad to see that Kingfisher hasn't been abandoned in favour of the new bigger boat. Dropping the jib together with double reefed main in a strong wind makes sense since the centre of effort of a reefed bermudan or gunter sail moves forward from its position when unreefed, compensating, at least partly, for the shift aft in c of e caused by dropping the jib.

That’s how Len Hedges explained it to me. I am just glad I remembered to try it. It was invaluable.

Well done Josh, looked like you picked a rare blue sky day and great cut, cheers Paul

Thanks Paul. Those blues are awesome aren’t they? Gotta try to avoid glare in future but tricky with a low sun. This was also first attempt at Davinci Resolve so a basic edit offering this time.

Great video Josh. Loved the rough water. You are obviously very comfortable sailing the Heron in rougher conditions. I thought you were very confident going offshore without a motor in a strong westerly! Well done - it made my lunchtime today.

Thanks for your kind words. I have been building up to doing stuff like this over the last two years. I have been out here before in more sedate conditions, and I have also been in safer places in rougher weather. Being confident in the boat is paramount, I really trust her. I also had tides and a reasonable forecast in the back of my mind. It is risky, but it is a calculated risk rather than a thrillseeker vibe. Glad you enjoyed it. Josh

Thanks for the video, no motor means you are sailing! Well done.

No shame in using the Grandad Gybe ;-) What a lovely sail, she really handles the waves well for a little boat.

Thanks Dave. Your mirror would be fine too, it’s just getting the right weather and lots of confidence! Josh

Wow you did have to work for it and I felt tired as well by the end of the video. Tired but like you happy for the day on the water. So glad you didn't capsize. What brand boat is yo it rs? And the name you have it? Sorry it was my first viewing but have subscribed for more.. Sailing your boat is so much more challenging and rewarding than sailing ones with all the electronics in navigation and rudder and sail control.

Cheers Bill. She is a heron class dinghy named Kingfisher. She was built in the 1960s and I have restored her to cruise around in. Glad you liked the video- have a look at the boat tour for more info.

That looked like a top sail! Back on the trusty Heron. Is Trim in dry dock getting a re fit? Hope to catch up soon. Been working like crazy on Stepping Stone.
@DinghyCruisingKingfisher2 жыл бұрын
Hey DP! Trim is in dry dock on account of the outboard in the workshop awaiting lower unit resealing. The heron has oars, unstoppable! Hope work on the Cherry is proceeding without drama. Take care, Josh

Thanks, another great video. You actually made it look easy! Every adventure that ends upright is a success! Is tide much of an issue in Broken Bay? I have seen (from shore) the tide really ripping through some of the upper reaches of the Hawkesbury to the point where it would exceed my maximum hull speed. Is it more moderate at the mouth? I could imagine it generating some sizeable standing waves if the wind was in the wrong direction?
@DinghyCruisingKingfisher2 жыл бұрын
You do have to be careful when approaching the mouth - i had calculated that I would be out there with tide running back in (for assistance). I got a bit of wind chop against swell but I managed that through sail changes and attentiveness to keeping the boat flat. I had better success getting back in the heads when I got up closer to rocks at Barrenjoey- less of a wind chop but no one likes getting closer to cliffs!

Dear Josh, I had a bit of a freak when I saw you wearing the spray jacket OVER the inflatable PFD ! May I suggest a reality check for you some sober moment in the privacy and comfort of your own home? - you might try getting into that gear again and inflating the PFD..... I expect you will experience first hand why experienced dinghy sailors wear foamies...... Cheers and best wishes, Frank
@DinghyCruisingKingfisher2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank. With the cooler weather, the foamie might be the better choice.

@@DinghyCruisingKingfisher rather than warmth and comfort of the non-inflatable types, I was more concerned about the strangulation risk of those inflatable types..... when worn UNDERNEATH other clothing.....
