My father was a Louisiana State game warden from 73 to 2000. He was an avid turkey hunter and had a hand full of best friends that were all Mississippi game wardens that he met working under cover in the early 80s. They would all meet up once or twice every April at John Boyt’s place in Brookhaven and hunt. Most of those men have passed on now but the killinest one of all of them is still with us. His name is Wayne Self. Been told he can kill turkeys where there ain’t none. In the early 90s my dad played a big part in trapping and transporting turkeys from south Mississippi to Ouachita and Union parish where we are from. The population and hunting got a lot better for many years but is not so great now.

What about Vernon Bevil formerly from SC to Mississippi? I’m gonna be 75 and been hunting turkey for 60 years except for 2 years in Vietnam. I knew Vernon and helped trapping with him here in SC. A great Biologist and was here in the beginning of the NWTF…Life Member since 1980… I’m an Ole Miss grad and loved it. Hurst came later!

God bless Mr. Benny! When I killed my first turkey at age 17 in 1993 that was the first year my county of Marshall had a county wide turkey season. Prior to that only parts of the county was open for hunting.
