Thank You so much! This is by far THE BEST review on the FACTOR Ostro VAM anywhere. Video is well produced and straight forward information about your experience from start to finish. You covered everything and more. I'm expecting the delivery of my Ostro VAM sometime in May. This review pretty much validated my build to be correct. I"m 5'7" with the same build spec as your FACTOR. Again, Thank You!

@@DiabeticCycling how did it ride compared to the bmc u had?
@DiabeticCycling

In this Factor review, I had mentioned how the bike rides like a BMW M Motorsport. Drawing a similar analogy, BMC Roadmachine I had rode like a Cadillac Escalade. It's very comfortable with that stretched out wheelbase with a slack fork angle, but still a very capable bike under a good pair of legs.

Roadmachine rides differently from a Teammachine as well so that'd be a tough call. I can't necessarily say the Ostro VAM would be a drastic upgrade from your Teammachine if the drivetrain and wheels are on par each other.

Mate, love the independent reviews and content, and this bike looks like an absolute beauty. Congrats!!!! But a serious suggestion, get your chain waxed instead of using oil! That black gunk visible on your cassette and chain at the beginning of the intro is not just costing you watts, but also costing you money as it abrades away your expensive cassette and Red chainrings. I've been using wax-based lubricants (Squirt on the gravel bike, UFO Drip v2 on the road) for a few months now and I am absolutely sold. My drivetrain looks sparkling clean, doesn't give me black marks on my hands when working on it, and I rest more comfortably knowing my expensive cassettes and chains will have longer life. Check out Zero Friction Cycling if you want to learn more, or how to get into using wax products.

Hi there. I'm 5'10" but I buy bikes as if I'm 5'8" a size down. If you are an inch shorter, you probably will still be ok. But I recommend you to compare your stack and reach numbers against another bike/size you are familiar with.

Great review! I love your guitar collection! I personally have a PRS and a Les Paul SG! Thinking of going to Ostro VAM from a 2016 BMC Roadmachine. Looking for something more stable on the decents and loose the speed wobbles! Do you think it would be an upgrade?
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling 2 жыл бұрын
Gotta love a fellow PRS and Gibby lover who rides bikes! So that's hella coincidence of you thinking going to Ostro from a Roadmachine, which is essentially what I did. If you watch my 2021 Roadmachine review, my sentiment was that the front end was too twitchy in high speed. While BMC RM is an excellent bike, the 2 you mentioned are pretty different in characteristics. Is Ostro an upgrade? That is a debatable since we are somewhat comparing apple to orange. Ostro a bit more racey, a bit more aggressive in handling and its geometry, a different ride than the RM. If that's what you are seeking and also an all-rounder one bike for all, would be a good fit.

Very nice video, I came across this bike and it's growing on me, I'm just waiting for the new Look bike Cofidis got to see what Look comes up with to make a decision. Did you go with the 25mm setback seatpost? I would probably not get it but I'm thinking maybe it adds some compliance too and I might still get my saddle to the desired position. Also I'm a bit concerned about those integrated bar and stem when it comes to getting the fit right, can you easily swap them for a longer/shorter length with the customer service? I've done a bike fit and we're about the same size so I'm pretty sure a size 52 with a 110mm stem length would be bang on with my measurements but you never know from bike to bike. Also how is the toe overlap on this bike?

Many thanks, Alan.
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling Жыл бұрын
Hi Alan! Thank you for your time watching. So "how comfortable" isn't something quantifiable as my "comfortable" may not equal to someone else's "comfortable". Therefore this one is tough to answer. That said, me personally, I take this bike out on epic days riding 100 or more miles in a single ride as I don't find it beating me up. However, it is also an out-and-out race bike designed for the pro tour riders, Israel Premier Tech, where the design ethos assume the rider being flexible, world class athlete, and free of pain I guess. Geometry isn't necessarily friendly or laid back for one with a back issue I suppose. But you could keep the cockpit high by not cutting off the steer tube, get yourself a quality saddle, run wide tires with tubeless allowing you to run lower pressure to get some comfort as well.

What an amazing review for ostro vam man! Glad youade the video cause theres not much out there you can see. Anyway, im super inlove with my ostro that I just got from my local bike shop here in Vegas. I opted the carbon gloss one. I used to have the BMC teammachine slr and this definitely rides fast… One thing I want to add about the Ostro seatpost is behind the post, i just noticed it last night when i cleaned my bike that theres some numbers amd factor name. Which with the gloss or exposed carbon frame, you cannot really see the numbers. It is a really nice touch from factor and the absolute quality made frame. By the way, I put the new Ultegra 8150 groupset and this thing is crisp as popeyes chicken.. hahaha. Anyway, see around and make more quality videos likes this. Cheers!

Nice review and video, it's good to hear honest opinion from a fellow 'ordinary' cyclist. I currently own a Scott Addict RC Pro, and considering to buy Ostro VAM. How do you rate your Ostro during climbing? I love to do a touring (long ride) and climbing (eg 1,000-2,000m), and looking for an upgrade for my current bike.
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling 2 жыл бұрын
hi Denny! Well, depending on how your Addict is spec'd and its age, I am not sure if an Ostro would be an upgrade. As to mine, keep in mind I don't have fancy 3rd party components like Darimo or Schmolke to significantly lower the weight. I'm running an "ordinary man" setup as I don't need to deck out my bikes like pros or weenies. Now that we have that established, the Ostro has no issue on long rides although I haven't taken her out to a touring situation. 100 plus miles in one ride, no issue. Despite not spec'ing out with "lighter bits" where my build comes in under 8kg or hair over 17lbs, no issues on climbing. If you build it out to weigh under 15lbs, you will definitely notice difference in addition.

@@DennyRachmat that sounds like a good build! My time on an Addict was too short for me to have an educated opinion. Hi DC - your review prompted me to find a shop and take a test ride. Unfortunately, there's only one shop within 100 miles that has Factor and they don't offer test rides. The stated reason is that each bike is custom fit to the rider which they apparently only do if you buy the bike. So, one must buy the bike before ever taking a ride. Is this a common practice with high-end bikes? I would probably never buy a Factor since there are other great bikes at a fraction of the price (Soloist), but I'll never know for sure without taking a short test ride.

@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. This is a bit tough to answer as everyone's build and proportions are vastly different. Your 170cm height may have different stack/reach than another guy the same height. That said, I would advise you to compare stack/reach numbers against other bikes you are familiar with to land at a proper size decision. I think 52 would be ok assuming a pretty standard body proportions. If stuck in between 2 sizes, I always recommend people to go with the smaller.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a slightly shorter torso with an inseam of 80cm. I've struggled with the fit on my Madone SLR, with excessive reach. Love the Ostro VAM. As for being "one bike", you would be hard pressed to find one that performs better. Also with your terrain where you got hills and flats mixed, Ostro would be an ideal one bike setup. I do feel that it is overpriced much as many other things. You are paying Bianchi/Colnago/Pinarello money for a brand that doesn't invoke emotional response some would say. Some don't care so long as it rides well.

A loaded question. Predominantly, this will depend on your body proportions, fit, and your personal preference in terms of where exactly you wish to be positioned on a bike. I have a longer torso than normal for my height, therefore I use a setback to compensate pushing me a bit further back so my torso and arms can "breathe" without collapsing towards the front bunched up.

Triathlon bikes want their saddle above the bottom bracket. It means that if you're going to spend a lot of time in aero tuck, you probably want a zero setback post. If you're going to sit upright all the time / climb, then offset will probably be more comfortable. That's before factoring in unusual body proportions.

I was looking at buying factor but when I realised they only did one frame as a frame set and didn’t sell Campagnolo as a full build I decided it wasn’t for me especially when the guy at factor Australia said why would you want to buy Campagnolo which was like waving a red flag to a bull. I love my Campy.

How do you rate its comfort vs other bikes you have ridden?
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling Жыл бұрын
Hi Darren. I mention it in the video what I think of in terms of comfort. Coincidentally I took her out on a century ride last weekend, the bike isn't going to beat you up despite being semi aero and an out and out race machine. Equipped with a proper saddle you like along with a proper fit, no issues.

@@DiabeticCycling thanks. Yeah I heard you mention the comfort but I was wondering what other bikes you're comparing it to. I have a Factor 02 and I'm trying to figure out if the ostro is more comfortable. That's what Factor claims
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling Жыл бұрын
@@darrenbarlow5759 Well it's tough to say since "comfort" really isn't quantifiable. What I consider comfy may not mean the same for others and vice versa. In the video, I list a few dozen of my past bikes to establish a baseline what my opinion is based on. I have not owned ridden an O2, so I don't know how it would measure up to it. Suppose I can go out on a limb and say comparing Ostro's comfort level to that of Canyon Ultimate which is a testament.

Got my Factor Ostro Vam on the 16th June with Dura Ace 12 speed group set & Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51 wheelset weight 7.4kg. I use the bike only 5 time. Didn’t Realised that at the head tiub there is a paint defect … looks like bubble or bump …. I made a complain to the factor dealer & after 4 days the factor agent came & take a look & snap photo of the bike…. … they say that this is defect ….. my worry is structure defect …. they didn’t x-ray … only took photo… Hopefully they replace the frame …. under warranty …

Obviously you shouldn't close your eyes when riding but if you close your eyes while riding the 2 you mentioned, you couldn't be able to tell the difference. Ride quality very similar.

Hi Maku. I talk my size and how I landed on my frame size extensively in this video. I also discuss a bunch of other bikes I ride/rode comparing size & fit. Give it a watch when you can and will give you much better idea than height/inseam which should only be considered as 2ndary for proper fit.

Lots of talk about aero, and the Ostro is an aero bike, but you ride with a big bag across the front?!
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling 2 жыл бұрын
Great point. Judging by your KZbin profile name, I reckon you know. When a ride is over 100 miles, I can only carry so much in my pockets, cameras, and a drone to boot. So a bag comes in handy. Not worried about being aero when I have cargo, ya know? :) Thanks for your time watching and leaving me a comment. SUPER appreciated!

@@DiabeticCycling I was the first to review the Ostro on KZbin, see what you think! Yeah, I get it if you have a drone to carry, but it's amazing how much you can fit in 3 jersey pockets. I don't really get the trend of hanging a bag sideways across your handlebar though.....
