Great video! Happy to see another fan addressing the good things about Medazzaland and Pop Trash. Duran Duran at their most experimental side! These were overlooked as many "fans" expect them to keep doing Rio/Seven albums all over again. Same feelings for Big Thing, love the ending with "Lake Shore Driving", even though it ends abruptly as Nick said it was due to a tape machine error. Just one thing, about remarks of "dated" sounds... it is expected for some albums to sound like 80s or 90s if those were their recording dates. Great list!

Thank you! I never knew about the tape machine glitch on Big Thing. I thought they were trying to copy what the Beatles did at the end of Side one on Abbey Road. I love those early Duran albums but the later ones have some great moments as well.

Big Thing is underrated. I think Notorious is ranked low here. I love the funky sound of Notorious. I rank Notorious #2. Great job this is the first band as a kid that I had to collect their stuff.

this is up my alley! Got to see them live a few years ago at a big outdoor festival - still sounded awesome! so many hits. I remember their huge videos in the 80s too.

You're all wrong in my opinion. Paper Gods is my 2nd, number 1 is first album Duran Duran , until this week with Future Past I will see in time if it makes it to the top, it's looking that way. Most underrated is Red Carpet Massacre, love it. Worst album is Thank You or Arena, A Diamond In The Mind is far far superior. Just my opinion of course.

I agree on most of this, they have this weird obsession with WANTING to sound like whatever the dance records of the time are.
@TheChadTI3 жыл бұрын
And I do understand why they would want that but as a fan I feel like they established their own distinct sound very early on and have spent most of their carreer fleeing from it.
@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati44863 жыл бұрын
I could not agree more! It hurts my ears to hear the crap they have been putting out lately trying to stay relevant. Wish they had broken up in the 90’s to be honest.

@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 I try to see both sides (as to temper my own expectations) I would take a record like Rio every single time and enjoy it but that would kill the band as a creative force and the only thing being produced would be diminishing returns, so I get it ultimately but yeah I'm not as into current dance or EDM in the way they are, just doesnt speak to me. Glad we have them still and performing at such a high level.

The thing I found about many UK bands, is that they go through "a phase". A few get away with it. A few regain their senses. Many just die off. And some just hang on because they can't go back!

Duran Duran/Rio/Seven are canon - so to me, a countdown can’t include them because they’re always be in the top three - lol So for me: Notorious Duran Duran (Wedding Album) Pop Trash Big Thing (Arcadia side project “So Red the Rose” is a lush, deep dive, sonic masterpiece.) After that, there’s not an album which speaks to me. There will be a song or two on each of the remaining albums, but that’s about it. Red Carpet Massacre, and Future Past are abominations which (except Pot Full of Honey - which I feel is a holdover song from another album) are best if forgotten. They get harder to listen to as the newer albums have come out, and for me it’s really sad. Note that I still have an extensive collection of Duran stuff which includes a photo book of their 84 tour with their autographs (and a tattoo of that jagged symbol from SatRT). I even still hunt for copies of the Fightin” Army comic which John is reading in the Rio video (I think I have 4, maybe 5 copies so far). So it’s not like I’m a passing fan or a passive listener. It’s been a lifetime investment in the band, with ever-dwindling returns. Oh well. Such is Life.

1. Duran Duran (UK) (So raw, so infectious) 2. Rio (US) (Just brilliant from beginning to end) 3. Notorious (DD all grown up. Sophisticated, Funky and tons of horns!) 4. So Red the Rose (Shouldn't count or should it? An absolute masterpiece and Nick Rhode's best work) 5. Meddazzaland (I'm in the minority, but it is so good conceptually, musically, lyrically and bizarre. DD without the army of session players and producers). 6. Pop Trash (See above, a little more polished. Medazzaland is the question, Pop Trash is the answer. Nick & Warren C are brilliant on these albums. Simon's vocals hit his full range and depth). 7. Big Thing (What a great comeback, the influence of Warren C kicks in and I'm a big fan) 8. Seven and the Ragged Tiger (Always thought it was a bit disjointed and over produced, but it is still outstanding). (5 - 8 can be moved around) 9. AYNIN (Starts off and ends brilliantly. Unfortunately there are a couple of perplexing tracks that ruin it for me). 10. All the great early B Sides(Late Bar, Khanada, To the Shore, Secret Oktober, Make me Smile)! Don't care to rank the rest. Plenty of good and bad on them.

Paper Gods - some B side songs from the “extras” release were very “Duran”. Universe Alone and Northern Lights were strong - BUT “Valentine Stones” is THE most DD song in the last 20 years.

Same area as Black Sabbath, good choice for number 14., 13 , 12, 11 , 10, 9, nice choices for newer albums . Notorious looks really cool, do you have it on cd , vinyl or both? it's the wedding album isn't there self titled the album that has Planet earth on? How is there debut number 3 and not number 2? when you say you really enjoy it a lot is that on Cd portable like driving in your car or going for a walk with your walkman or listening it on the Stereo? 7 and the ragged tiger I would have put in third place and the debut in 2nd same question for number 1 do you take the cd with you a ride in your car, walk with your walkman or on the stereo.? my 3 would be 3. 7 and the ragged tiger 2. self titled 1. Rio
