"The Kharkovchanka" - Russia's Colossal Antarctic Cruisers which have been continuously operating in some of the most extreme environments on Earth for over 50 years. Produced in Kharkiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialistic Republic and originally operated by USSR, the 'Харьковчанка' (literally 'Kharkiv Women'), these amazing Snow Cruisers were built in the late 1950s and featured everything a polar explorer could need in the field. In their half-century mission, they have crossed thousands of miles on Antarctic Ice, visited the South Pole, the pole of inaccessibility as well the dozens of outposts and research stations on the continent.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGe1Xptma66mgNk

I lived in the Canadian Arctic for 13 years. Cars and trucks are shipped up by ship, or flown on an aircraft. I had a 2003 grand caravan in Iqaluit Nunavut. It worked great. You need synthetic oil, a battery blanket and block heater. There were many typical vehicles up there. But out on the tundra and off road you need snowmobile in winter and ATV in summer. There is no real travel over the Arctic ice unless you had a Bombardier, but good luck finding one. A few years ago, three men towed a brand new Ford F-150 on a wooden sled behind a Bombardier. Attached to the truck were two new snowmobiles. The drove from Churchill Manitoba to a community in Nunavut. When they stopped to sleep, the Bombardier broke threw the ice. One man got out before sea ice clogged the hole, the other two drowned. As the bombardier sank, it slowly pulled the truck and snowmobiles under, but the survivor managed to get one snowmobile started and raced for help. 2 days later, navy divers retrieved the bodies and the bombardier, pickup truck and remaining snowmobile sat perfectly on the ocean floor.

They're also extremely versatile, being easy to modify. I'd have the suspension lifted and some slightly larger tires fitted to help with rough terrain, but other than that, I'd keep it stock. I can imagine parking in a forested area to just climb out and observe. I can't think of any prouder moment for a car owner than to go somewhere beautiful, just them and the machine, just because they can. Sorry if my wording is bad, it is 5:28am and I have not slept. @@EdsAutoReviews ..sure if they had been around during my deep snow transit. But I would have had a lot more to say to them about the shady service department at York Volkswagen. At my first regular warranty service they said they found a stripped sparkplug. I would have to come back to get that fixed. Then they said since the engine would have to come out, they might as well do a valve adjustment. Projected cost was nearly the same as what I paid for the car new..close to $2000CAD. i decided to drive it until the next maintenance visit but went to a small garage specializing in VWdubs. I never said a word about the sparkplug thing. When I picked it up I asked any issues? Nope. All good. I drove that car another 100k miles with no issues. It was a great car. Dealerships at that time 1970 were to be avoided at all costs. I'm still pissed about it and all the little old ladies who got ripped off at that place..BWAHH The only time that car failed me was north of lake superior towing a sailboat. The engine red light came on and it stopped. 10 minutes later I was back on the road with a new fanbelt which was included with the car plus a few tools. I had that car for 120k miles until the floor literally fell apart from rust. It took my pregnant wife and me 45 km into Toronto to have our first child. The temperature was minus 35. The shifting was hard, the suspension was hard, my wife suffered, but we made it. It owed me nothing!!

Car manufactures test extreme cold starting and driving conditions in Northen Ontario and Northern Quebec. Yes people live there where it can easily get to minus 40 or below. This is lumber country. Most daily drivers that the residences have put in plug in block heaters and a plug in oil heater. Funny to see a power cords hanging out of the grill. They don't salt the roads either because it would not melt. Sand is used for icy roads but not often. Saw as many cars as trucks.

Very true. I grew up in North Bay, Ontario, which is just the beginning of the north, and winter was bloody cold! I remember as a small kid in the 70's my parents both drove old school Beetles. We froze our asses off in those cars, but they always got us there. For those who don't know, while the old Beetles were fantastically reliable cars, their heaters were the most useless things on the planet.

The Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by New Zealander, and first man to climb Mt Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary, used farm tractors as their means of transport. The tractors, Ferguson TE-20s, were totally standard - two were even fitted with a standard farmyard hydraulic front-loader for loading and unloading supplies. The tractors were fitted with an extra wheel on each side and full caterpillar tracks, developed by the expedition in the Antarctic. The track kits were easily removable and in light conditions the tractors were used on standard wheels and tyres. A canvas cabin was added for windproofing. (1955-58).

Pick up some vintage 1909 abandoned snow tractors from the 1910-1913 British Terra Nova Expedition that began (after constructing a series of supply depots along the way) on 17 January 1912, led by Robert Falcon Scott, that reached the South Pole (90° S) second after Roald Amundsen's Norwegian South Pole expedition that got an earlier start on 14 December 1911 and was the first to plant a flag on the South Pole in this historic race. In the 2019 film, Amundsen, Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen had some good suggestions to Robert Scott's Antarctic expedition: - Wear arctic wolf fur clothing as that is best for extreme cold and removing moisture from you instead of Scott's cotton parkas that got wet easily and took long to dry out. - Use Greenland sled dogs as they are the best and they will eat fellow dogs fed to them, but Scott used automotive tractors from 1909 that quickly broke down, his Siberian ponies quickly died, and he only had a small amount of sled dogs remaining until they died and the explorers had to drag their sleds slowly to their exhaustion. - Start as early as you can and build supply bases as far as you can, but Scott started later, his progress was slower, and his expedition died within 11 miles of a supply depot on the journey back when they arrived at the South Pole to see Roald's Norwegian flag planted there nearly a month before.

Beetles’ advantage is in part because physics favors “less” (an RC car jumps hundreds of miles for its scale), and Beetles are way lighter than it seems because they have insect-like exoskeletal structural design using high strength sheet metal. Anyway a Baja bug is far beyond that with fiberglass fenders and aprons and bigger tires to help with flotation and grip. Been there, jumped that, out-mudded everything else. Truly incredible stuff.

On the North Slope ARCO had pickup trucks that were kept in a garage. Personnel that need to do maintenance in the Artic winter would drive a pickup out a sally port. If while they were working at q well the truck stalled, the crew would radio for a rescue and abandon the pickup. The pickup's coolant would quickly freeze breaking the engine block. In the spring a wrecker would tow the pickup to the garbage dump. He next summer barge run would include replacement pickup trucks.

When I worked for ARCO I found out ARCO had ARCO Artic gasoline on the North Slope. It was formulated not to congeal at Artic temperatures. There was a topping plant at the North Slope which distilled natural gasoline from the crude. It was mixed with additives ti make ARCO Artic . Every summer a truck hauled a tanker trailer with additive up the pipeline road. It dropped the full trailer and hauled the old back. The cost of hauling the tank trailer up the pipeline road made ARCO Artic the most expensive gasoline in the USA.

Talking of starting problems in the cold: I understand that Nick Mason once drove his children to school in mid-winter in a 60s Ferrari 250 GTO because it was the only one he could get to start.💪
