Seems like wood knocks and rock clanging probably has more to do with communication than noise for the sake of noise. Question is, what is being communicated? Seems like humans knocking for the sake of a response is like poking a wasp’s nest with a stick. Sounds to me like there IS an intelligent animal out there who is desperately trying to communicate just one thing about contact with humans which is, "GET OUT OF OUR TERRITORY AND LEAVE US ALONE!".
