Catamaran IMPI is sailing around the world.
In this series we are sailing in INDONESIA - It's OUT OF SEASON for sailing RAJA AMAPT but we are LOVING IT !!!
We share some of our dives - Insanely beautiful, a stunning 'hide away marina' (I say so because very few sailors know of it's existence and yet, for Indonesia this place is a treasure for what otherwise is a very remote sailing territory for services offered to sailboats.
In our previous episode, we've come through some heavy weather to get here, and this episode we show why it was WORTH IT !
Meet some of the folks at Meridian Dive Adventures and 'Waisai Marina' (as some of us to refer it) - A number of South Africans along with local folks operate here.
We show you some of the programs for youngsters here, young sea cadets being trained in military style to become seamen - once trained - they are the most sought after sea cadets for commercial operations in the world.
MERIDIAN ADVENTURES SAIL, DIVE, RESORT
We end this video where we will begin in our next episode - preparing to cross through Kabui Pass which has been passed by a number of sailboats, yet is feared by many sailors and captains we've spoken to.
We hope you enjoy
P.s. We are NOT advertising for anyone here - we recieve no monetary gain from sharing this with you - we do it from a space of love - we do it because we always believe we should share the AMAZING things we discover on our journey, including people and services.
DIESEL - Before departing for Indonesia we were told diesel is dirty and is a huge problem for boats in Indonesia. For this reason and because we love running our air conditioners day and night in Indo, we decided to load the boat with full tanks, pleanty of diesel drums etc. - it's heavy and slows the boat down adding a lot of pressure to the sails.
This is why discovering Waisai (Meridian Adventures) Marina is such a treasure. Had we known this, we could have sailed lighter out of Australia.
Here is the link to diesel in Indonesia:

LOL - I totally understand Ken - we are slow at putting vids up - we are busy enjoying life (major moves with kids out of South Africa, selling property etc) and life for us is fleeting, but we share as we find the gaps and generally just after folks ask us questions about a certain region or experience, we try to combine the information in our videos to hopefully demonstrate the reply. Thanks for you concern about us - very much appreciated that you care and thanks for the underwater video comment - that's encouraging considering I'm not good at capturing underwater scenes. I do think the diving in Raja Ampat is exceptional, so it's difficult to capture that wrong. Have a great weekend and thank you for commenting

Thank you - great comment and especially to be compared with Nikki and Jason - I love how those two have taken on the challenge of sailing and think they are such an amazing couple. My son sailed with them a bit and can't say enough good things about them. I'm trying these days to avoid the rough oceans - lol - but since we like to sail off the beaten track or out of season it's not always possible. Thanks again - very much appreciated!

An absolute pleasure for us to share it on ! Sorry you guys have been cursing your boat - you always welcome to write to us (FB or Instagram) where we can be of assistance to you. We purchased our 440 new and have kept a good hand on her - been an amazing boat, but for sure, its hard to find good quality 440's these days since they get snapped up . Please feel free to write if you want some technical advice on the 440 - we live onboard ours and are constantly sailing on her. We've done plenty of mods to the boat including sail size etc. We sailed Impi 5000nm since Covid - wrong way at the wrong time of year and through a number of ferocious storms - couldn't be helped because we wanted to get from West Sumatra to East Coast Australia where we were permitted to clear in at Cairns - tough sail and Impi handled those conditions really well. (I do think the mods we've done to the boat help it to help us). Once you get your boat sorted it will look after you :) All the best Brent

Catamaran Impi So sorry for the confusion. I meant Cruising not cursing. We have been delighted with our choice of the Lagoon 440. We love the flying bridge and would not trade it. We did remove the impeller in the generator with the electric pump. Works fantastic. We have added 2200 watts of solar, 1200 ah batteries a new windless and new chain. We did add a large hard top for shade and rain protection. Loving life, thanks to you for such a great example.

Hallo, so nice to see you guys again, yea you meet South-Africans just about everywhere, I myself live for 35 years in Europe and still headed back to retire in our underestimated country. Now to disagree with you might not be a nice gesture but you excel at photography but in as out of the water some of the most exiting episodes at the drop of a hat is your roaring forties, then your truly amazing empathy with the doggy on that island in New Caledonia I was moved to tears, Ag man I can go on and on but for the likelihood of embarrassing myself for swooning I will suffice by say you guys are awesome and I love every episode I can get my finger on. Good winds and fair sailing, Joelene.

Hello Joelene - such a lovely comment from you! I'm so pleased you are back home to retire in the lovely sunshine and warmth of the people in South Africa. Most of my family all still live there including my Mum - I am still resident there too and I always get along well with all the people of our land. As for the kids - I think like you did, it's great for them to get out there and experience the big old world for themselves and get a broader picture . Thank you for the photography comment - that's very cool :) You speak of the doggy in New Caledonia and yes, so true, a very sad story and yet he brought about so much good to the outer islands. This week here in Lankawi we traded some goods on the boat for dog food - lol - we found some really nice folks looking after abandoned dogs on the island and it continues to be something we find sad, is how sometimes we as people just leave these trustworthy animals to fend for themselves. Unless this Corona Virus thingie gets out of hand and some countries close their boarders to us, we will be crossing the Indian for South Africa and it would be lekker to have a cup or two with you. Lovely comment - thank you

Hey thanks SY Ronja - I appreciate the comment as editing videos does not come naturally to me - so thank you! I'm hoping that boats who follow our wake can get some idea of the cruising grounds they will sail to. We've always found blogs and videos by others so helpful when it comes to sailing grounds, and even then, we sometimes feel a place very differently to how they describe it, so I guess a cross section of videos makes it more interesting for folks. We will keep going - getting ready to cross the Indian for Cape Town later this year - so it's all go, go, go :) Have a great weekend Brent and Ana

The diving is insanely beautiful - I think we may also have been there at the time of year where the oceans at it's best clarity. The dives we did with Meridian - they told us the water clarity is sometimes at its best out of season. Thank you for the comment about the under water photography - I literally pointed the GoPro and filmed - no filters etc. as in the past after much instruction from the professionals I just didn't seem to get it right with red filters etc. Cheers my friend - have a great weekend and stay young at heart!

That was great Brent! So nice to see the resort and dive operation. It looks like the most professional set up I've ever seen. The underwater video was excellent. It was just like being there without having to equalise my ears. Do you know if they have a system for counting divers in and out? We've had some unfortunate instances of divers being left behind in our industry here.
@CatamaranImpi
@CatamaranImpi 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil - great comment - thanks! Yes, the Dive and Resort operation is very professional and they do a head count on the boat when we leave as well as a head count back onto the boat after a each dive. The boats are also not that big so it's limited in numbers which is nice. I also noticed that each diver has his 'own station' so as one sits on the boat, there is compartment to the front with the dive tank and gear. After the tank is removed they ask us to place our personal items at the station. This way they can also see if any tanks are missing, items are without owners etc. I too am very cautious of this - I remember the South African Archie being left behind in Australia on one of the reefs. I think they found him two days later drifting mid ocean. His biggest fear was not sharks, but the seagulls that were trying to peck his eyes out. I've never forgotten that story - he was VERY lucky they found him. Cheers mate

@@philgray1023 - I didn't really check out the resort rooms etc. - I would say the place is nice for folks wanting to go out on regular dives more so than for visiting the island interior. As for the marina - we thought it was well priced and it was awesome to have a spot where we could get supplies ... generally that region is very remote and supplies are historically difficult to get here, so it's a big plus for the community and sailors alike :)

Todd 'n Nancy. Thanks guys and really nice to hear from you again ! Yes, this is true - unfortunately there is a lot of plastic still in the ocean . I know Raymond the sponsor and agent for many sailors cruising in Indonesia is doing his level best to see that government hears about it and we can see local folks being more aware. I think folks need keep up the pressure of nations cleaning up their oceans - it’s important . I have yet to share the beautiful islands up in Anambas - when we were there we literally saw where turtle were paddling over the sand and though oil patches to lay eggs in the sand. Ana wrote a blog about the positive and negative experiences we had and immediately Raymond was enquiring where these spots were, how many beaches were affected etc. etc. and then folks from Anambas Toruism Department contacted us to follow up promising to clean up . I find this promising and I do hope Indonesia keeps up their attitude for change because they have amazing destinations on this beautiful globe of ours. @@CatamaranImpi That's the way to go, Brent and Ana. Many years ago I was "let go" from a consulting firm after about 6 weeks' employment because I wouldn't do what the directors told me to do. I thought that it was unethical and just plain wrong. I went to a job interview with DEC, Digital Equipment Corporation, and said that if they wanted me to lie and cheat the customer, I wasn't interested in their job. They hired me on the spot. There are ethical companies out there.

@@roadie3124 - this is so refreshing. In South Africa I was in the earthmoving and mining business - had my own company. In order to get contracts, I was being asked to pay money to officials or 'people in powerful places'. That was actually the time I decided to get out of it. Growing up in South Africa has had it's challenges - the old South Africa had terrible 'wrongs' and the new South Africa unfortunately is also struggling to find the correct path - it seems to have just applied the same wrongs in the opposite direction although I think our current president is trying his level best in a difficult situation. Throughout this time we've always taught the kids, that in the end, 'good triumphs over bad'. I WANT my kids to know that as absolute truth and Terry says he certainly is. My daughter who moved to New Zealand is also very happy and doing well - the folks in New Zealand have been incredibly kind to her. My kids won an award at their school for 'kindness' ... I thought that was so cool (The proudest Dad I am) and I always hoped this would carry on into their adult life. I can't understand why folks want to get the upper hand on others sometimes - I would much prefer to live in a world where folks care for each other and I guess that starts with being the example. It feels like an uphill battle but it has to start with us as ordinary people. Well done for standing up for whats right - I can't imagine the pain of dying as a 'dishonest man' so you did a very good thing there.

I really enjoyed this one Brent. The underwater footage was great. A simple red flip filter on the front of a go pro works wonders. You must try it. I’m off to Cape Town in the morn to deal with Yanmar and new engines for my leopard so we still are track to get sailing by May 😊

Hey thanks Mike. I hope Wayne De Kock looks after you - he has been a great Yanmar agent to us and always willing to help. I'm keen to hear about your new engines - when we return to Cape Town later this year I'm thinking to either buy a new boat or upgrade Impi and although we have few engine hours I would just replace everything as a matter of course. Cheers my friend - say Hi to Wayne for us aye!

Tom Bobtail hi Tom - sorry I missed this comment. We just sailed into Sabang on West Sumatra so we’re prepping for the crossing and a few days at sea . We use a program called SAS PLANET. It allows one to download various sat provider imagery among other very nice downloads . It offers more download images than any other program I know of - these include ESRI, Google, Nokia, Map Box, Bing and many more depending on the region you will be looking at.

Brent great to see Ana & you again . It's been a long time . The diving was beautiful the water was so clear . Does Ana scuba dive at all ? How long has Terry been a broker with Just Catamarans in Florida ? Hope he's doing well there .

Bob Shaw hi Bob - nice to hear from you again. Yes, Ana does dive although she chooses her locations and does not like diving where there is strong current. Terry has been a broker with Just Catamarans about two years now - before that he worked in catamaran service for them a few years . He is indeed doing well and selling many boats which is nice. For Terry he really loves the excitement of seeing people realizing their dreams which is really rewarding . I really miss the interaction with folks like you which is reminding me why I want to post more often.

Nice Video. How much do you pay for the diesel at the resort, price per L or Gal. Much appreciate you answer.
@CatamaranImpi
@CatamaranImpi 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Ana has just got into bed but says she will look for the invoices in the morning. It was fairly similar in price to the rest of Indonesia and we paid about 10c more per liter for the polishing. I don't think the marina can sell diesel directly to the public so a local company brings it in bulk and sells it - and the marina adds a bit for polishing. It's very reasonable though. Please remind us if we have not got back to you with the exact figures by this time tomorrow. We had mates who filled up in Sorong cheaper but it was such a mission. Ana bought a few supplies in Sorong while I kept watch over the dinghy - it was not a pleasant experience - difficult landing places, plastic everywhere etc. In the end we just bought a lot of supplies via the marina delivered to the boat (especially nice with cases of drink) and most supplies were reasonably priced in Waego although supplies are basic. Attached to the marina is a walkway to the ferry terminal so apparently many guests at the marina run by ferry to Sorong where they do not have to worry about their boats out at anchor. We had NO issues in Sorong, but some of our friends did with stuff taken off their boat etc. When we were anchored off Yeffman - Ana , who was dressed in her sleep ware and me in undies were lying on the couch watching a movie. I heard laughter in 'steroe'. Ana and I looked at each other and thought, 'hmmm' - that was odd. And then we heard it again. I jumped up and ran outside only to find a local guy sitting there on our patio seats watching us watching tv - and he thought we were funny as we laughed at the show. I didn't quite know how to react and fortunately he was harmless, but needless to say we got a shock at how he just managed to get there without us knowing. So - added sensors and stuff not to be caught out again - lol - one needs to be aware of this.

I get the impression (with all those South Africans popping up everywhere) that more "whites" are leaving South Africa than ever before. My father's first contact as a physician was for Royal Dutch Shell based in Sorong from 1957 till the early 60s. They lived in one of the houses on the hill just above the harbor from where he made a lot of sun set photos with me sitting on my mothers lap on the veranda as a 1year old. Sorong and surroundings were very well maintained in those days. Quite the reverse from what it is nowadays, I am told. According to my mother the government civil service people were permitted to shop in Sorong's only supermarket on Wednesday morning and get the hell back to Doom island afterwards. This was because they were considered being of a lower status than the much better paid Shell employees. The waters around Sorong are littered with stuff (cars, trucks, bulldozers, oil drill material, etc..., a lot of it brand new still packed in crates) that were dumped there (a little fuel in one of the dozers that drove everything, including its self, from the pontoons) in 1963 by the Dutch rather than handing it over to the Indonesians. Stay safe.

@CatamaranImpi 4 жыл бұрын
This is such an interesting comment - you would know a lot more about the history there than we do. That's so interesting how you had to shop one day of the week and then get back to Doom Island - gee !!! We LOVED Raja Amapat, but yes, it's true - the place needs a MASSIVE clean up. I have never seen more plastic and waste in an ocean than along the 'water front area' of Sorong - it was incredibly sad to see. The dive resort actually has adopted some islands up there and dive every week pulling out plastics and other litter ... they truly deserve a prize for what they are doing there. As for South Africa - phew - yes - I cannot believe how many I am meeting all over the world, but they seem very happy wherever I find them, so it feels like they take it as an adventure of sorts and are willing to start from scratch ... it's incredible for us to see. I met a family from South Africa recently - they have little to no money but they are 'making a plan', working their butts off and say they really feel happy. It's been this spirit of being prepared to loose everything and start again that I have so admired, and even more, the countries and people that offer such kindness and assistance to these folks - amazing !!! Last night Ana and I went down to the dock here in Langkawi - we were invited by a South African who was doing some work for us on the boat. My goodness - there they were - gathered around tables - all South Africans - lol !!! They call Malaysia 'home'. Personally I hope and wish for South Africa to 'find a way' - I truly do - it's an amazing and great country and I do believe the average person across the board living there, has good will at heart - they need someone, something to show the way. Perhaps our President is the man - I think he has the skills and I hope he pulls through for us. Cheers for now

Hi Al - Thank you for the kind words mate! We actually had a successful YT couple on the boat once wanting to offer us advice about our 'dwindling' channel - it was very kind of them, but as we listened we realized we are just in a very different space to them altogether. A great part of sailing is being at one with nature and it's important to find that balance between sharing and experiencing that magical calm the ocean brings to one. I've watched some folks run YT vids on how to choose and vote for a best catamaran for example - and these are folks sailing monos - they sit most of the time in a marina growing their YT channel steadily - people hang on every breath and then I see in their comments advising folks that a Lagoon 440 for example, is definitely not a boat to sail the oceans with, it can't handle heavy sea conditions, it's not suited for anything but hanging off the islands, the boat is slow etc. etc. - and I just think to myself how uninformed they are and yet they influence so many people out there. A couple who were watching all this were really disappointed that their dream boat which happened to be similar to ours, (everyone has personal preferences and choices) was off the chart for them because of the comments made by this couple. They told me they saw our videos when they googled Lagoon 440 and saw us sailing some really rough seas. They flew out to meet us - a long flight - 20 odd hours plus - and we told them we could not spend too much time with them but they came anyway. We spent a day and a bit going through all the details and showing them how the boat sails. They flew home the following day as they had to get back to work. Within two months they purchased their Lagoon 440 and followed some of the steps we shared to make the boat a great cruising boat - left their jobs - are now sailing the world - and they LOVE the boat. They were telling Ana and me how this misinformation had nearly cost them from buying this boat. So I thought it would be a good idea to write a comment explaining that whilst things like woodwork and performance curves are good to consider in voting for an ideal boat, that more important factors like for example, how a performance curve is affected when the boat is 'loaded' for cruising etc. is also important. I put quite a bit of effort into the reply so folks could look at the video and read the comments to make a better informed decision when choosing their ideal cruising boat. Anyway - this is a topic all on it's own, but in the end, my comment got blocked by the folks who produced the video. Why? Because it's not about the people getting good information - it's about the producers of these videos getting the recognition, subscriber numbers & the money. So - are they really more successful than us - perhaps but then by which yard stick is this being measured? I do wish we got more exposure for this reason alone - that folks out there wanting to 'live the dream' get another perspective to what some 'YT experts' would otherwise be selling their viewers. We want to keep our channel real and it would be nice if it grew because people wanted to get an honest feel for the cruising lifestyle. In the end - we as sailing couples / families etc. also have different opinions to each other - some love ocean passages, others don't - some love luxury items like air conditioning, others don't etc. etc. so its good if people can watch a variety and find a cross section of YT posters which seem to be sharing from a realistic space. A long reply - phew - but I hope gives some inkling as to why I feel we haven't failed at it entirely :) Cheers my friend Brent
