Nice boat, did the same thing 5 years ago on a Oyster 435 cutter ketch. Bought mine in Bristol, RI USA. Upgraded electronics and did some teak deck work. I come from a Southern Cross back ground and the brewer bite style of keel suits my style of sailing. Love the quality of her build and access.

It's true, but the funny thing is how much more volume the modern production boats have. Ours has about the same room inside as a Jeanneau 42, but the ride is totally different. Crossing the Bay of Biscay earlier this week we had big seas and we hardly felt it, at least not the way you would on a charter boat.

Congratulations on your Oyster ! I had my previous boat (Saga/Saltram 40) in Troon for a couple of seasons about 4 years ago and often looked at Taliisman sitting sadly forlorn next to boatyard there. I actually dreamed of having a 485. Now luckily I do ! "White Wings" the last 485 built. They are wonderful yachts, fantastically built and finished and a size easily handled by husband and wife team. You will love Talisman. You are on the doorstep of one of the best cruising grounds in the world. Explore the Clyde area but Get around to the West Coast and Hebrides before you take her away from that area. It is a fantastic sailing area with hundreds of beautiful achorages, good marinas, good pubs and restaurants and very freindly local. Fair winds and calm seas for your future cruising. Hi Kevin and Wendy . I am in the process of purchasing an Oyster 485 and have watched your channel extensively to give me some idea of the highs and lows and pitfalls of living aboard a boat is like . I also will be looking to travel the Med and then further afield maybe doing the Arc. I am about to have the boat surveyed and wondered if after having had the boat for awhile there was any issues/problems you think that stood out for my surveyor to look for . I accept all boats are different and all surveys are but I wondered if there was anything that jumped out at you to be aware of. Really appreciate any comments you might have . Love the channel and love the content .Happy sailing
@SailingTalisman5 жыл бұрын
I'd say any known damage to the rudder. High engine or genset hours. 10,000 hours on an engine is about when they start possibly needing to be replaced, but that number can climb dramatically if the engine has been serviced properly and on schedule. These are basically tractor engines, and are pretty rugged. If your surveyor sees any major fiberglass repairs, it would be worth knowing what happened. A remarkable number of Oyster boats have fallen off jackstands at the yard. They're heavier and slipperier than you might imagine. If electronic items like chartplotters aren't working, just change them out. The new stuff is so much better anyway. The old Grunert refrigeration system uses a ton of power and doesn't work that well in my opinion. We've managed to keep ours on-line, but I'm looking to replace it in the next month or so with a 24v system. There may be rotted stringers below the refrigerator as the system creates a lot of frost and the fridge then doesn't drain well. This is common to all the 485s, so not a deal killer. Look for water infiltration around windows and hatches, as you would with any boat. Watermaker may or may not be working. If not, replace it. The new ones are much better. Teak decks on the Oysters are vacuum bagged (glued down), and this is a fantastic feature. Generally the teak is very thick to start with, and having very few deck penetrations (screws) is a real selling feature. Overall, these boats were speced with the best of the best.

That's great feedback from you thank you ..The engine hours are only mid 2000k so I think there is plenty of life in it yet and I believe it's been serviced regularly. That's and interesting fact about Oysters coming off their stands ..I will bare that in mind and make the surveyor look for any traces of such although they are pretty bullet proof i'm led to believe. I think you are right about the new electronics and it's something I will look to change out once iv'e spent sometime getting to know her. You changed yours to the Raymarine Axiom I seem to remember ..are you pleased with it ? From the looks of her the fridge and freezer are in quite good condition but I will also bare in mind that it might be better coming out ..all of these things are hit and miss I guess on an older boat so you have to assume there's going to be replacement costs. Overall she looks like a decent purchase and think compared to other oysters of her age she looks to have been well looked after . Thank you again so much for your comments and maybe our paths will cross over the oceans and I can buy you both a cold beer.

We loved that place. They actually have to businesses there. There's the take out side and then the restaurant, which I hope is still open. Inside the restaurant they have all the architectural sections for the original J-Class yachts framed on the walls and it's the coolest thing ever. We also came to really appreciate the Scots Restaurant in Troon Marina. The food there was exceptional, and the staff took care of us like we were family. I literally ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there for almost two months and never tired of it. At night the bartenders would sometimes comp me drinks. When we launched the boat the manager and all the servers kicked in money to buy Wendy and I dinner on our last night. What a wonderful place and time. Brings back fond memories.

Well, it's stressful. We have major tides running most of the time (4 meters HW to LW) and wicked winds. Luckily, the boat is heavy displacement and handles well (it turns out) in tight quarters, but you have to actually untie and start doing that to find out. Much less stressed about things now.

Indeed. It feels more like one every day. It's interesting, because RR is more accurate. This isn't a Ferrari or other sports car, but more of a robust luxury ride. Ours is a bit older at 1994, but the quality of the fiberglass and woodwork never fails to impress.
@tobiasburen83407 жыл бұрын
Oh oh! On a older RR you better be an electrician. I hope not on that great boat! It's really nice and one of my favourites too! Best wishes for the future!
@SailingTalisman7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just owning a boat means you need to be an electrician. On that front I started off being "pretty good", like a 6 on a scale of 10, but since being on Talisman it's more like 8 out of 10 now. The main thing hasn't been failures, but actually upgrades, and you learn a lot when you're installing new stuff all the time. I have 3 top end voltmeters (GB and Klein) on board of which 2 are kind of for backup. Without those, you'd be lost.

@Anglosaxon6911 ай бұрын
Without looking at your watch, how long have you been sailing?
@tedrenard4727 жыл бұрын
So, what did it feel like being the only person ever to wear sunglasses in Scotland? Did people run up to you in the streets and ask what they were :-). Nice yacht, congratulations. I'm with you on the preference for the older models. Since the advent of people "winning" the ARC cruises, manufacturers are concentrating more on performance at the sacrifice of seaworthiness & comfort, which is why some of the older Hallbergs are becoming sought after even by people with the money to buy newer. Happy sailing.
@SailingTalisman7 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly it was sunny a lot of the time. But your observation intrigues me. Perhaps the Scots don't wear sunglasses a lot. I can't remember either way. As for the boat, we've been totally happy with Talisman, despite the fact that a lot of upgrades have been necessary. We knew that going in and feel like we're still ahead financially and have a rock solid boat. We see a ton of Hallberg Rassys out and about on our travels, along with Malos and Nijads, which were two boats I didn't spend enough time studying (since they are few and far between in the States). Thanks for watching.

I know exactly where you are coming from. Half of you wants to sit back and take everything in and the other half wants to get hands on the wheel and just enjoy. Above all you don't want to put a scratch on it before the ink has dried on the contract.

What a fantastic boat and congratulations on your decision to commit to her. Just one small observation, I was little surprised to see Sales crew bang down the winch handle on the deck. I'd expect them to take care and respect another person's boat (be it the present or potential new owner's) it should have been properly stowed in its pocket and not dropped into the sheets where it could get entangled and lost over the side. Finally the complete absence of life jackets during your test sail didn't look too professional on their part either......? Rant over. Incidentally, have you featured this boat in a previous vlog when doing your rounds? Best wishes and fair winds - Evano

Great points. I think the winch handle was an oversight in the heat of the moment. However, having lost two over the side in recent years from that exact situation, when I saw it sitting there later I moved it back to one of the handle storage locations. As for PFDs, the Scots are fanatics about it (usually, since the water is so cold). Even the marina night watchman wears one when walking the docks. However, the winds were light and we had them all out below for quick retrieval. We had an odd thing going on with the videos for the first Oyster 485. As of today, Stella Maris in Almerimar, Spain is still for sale. We traveled to see that boat, and were on the cusp of making an offer when I decided I had to see this one. We had a ton of video on the first boat, and I reached out to the broker to offer to do a video but was uneasy doing so without asking on something we had pulled out of. I know the owners were disappointed. We never heard back about the offer and were forced to accept it as a "no". I do think this was a mistake on their part. The price is right on Stella and she's actually a newer boat. We would have sold it for them I suspect, as we've sold other boats in our video series.

Yeah, we checked early and they seem good. We put a bit of grease on them after.

its scary for sure... the first time you leave the marina alone

Troon was way scary, and still would be after become proficient with docking her. The west coast of Scotland is no place to mess around. The wind howls and the tides are significant.

Hi Kevin, Boat is very great condition .Can you hint price range she cost ? Looking for One myself

Hi PK. The best place to start is yachtworld.com. Enter Oyster as brand, sail only, and set length 45-54'. The 485 (our boat) had a long production run, spanning somewhere around a decade, for a total of something like 33 hulls. Typically, the asking prices tend to be around $200k to $275k, but I know that very few were available last I looked. Spring is the high season for boat listings, with late fall/early winter being the low.
